I just ended up moving into our spare room, and my room mate and I used my old room as the new spare room. Tapping only happened in the old room.

Moved out about a year ago, but my old room mate is still there, the room is still used as a spare, if I go back anytime soon I'll go check if the note is still there and take a photo for proof.

OP I might have a simple explanation. I lived at an apartment complex that would get flyers like this put on the door about once a week from some club promoter or something. It was usually the same flyer over and over again. So sometimes I would just be lazy and keep putting the previous week's flyer back on my door because I didn't feel like throwing it away or getting another flyer posted on my door that would just have to be thrown away later. Maybe this is what's happening and you're just busy and haven't seen your neighbors yet. It is strange though that you haven't seen anyone else yet though.

See, the thing is, the 3rd floor has an extra lock to get into the hallway. It is weird as the other two floors don't have it, but when i was renting the place the leasing agent said it was for 'Extra Security' So only tenants entering or leaving the 3rd floor could get in.

Tonight I get home from work and it's gotten worse, I absolutely think something knows I'm aware of what's going on.

I hear whispers in the hallway now. Constantly, i try to hum or make noise when im in the hallway to keep myself from listening too much. They started this morning when I was walking to the elevator to head to work and stopped, closed my eyes, and tried to listen hard to convince myself this was just my imagination. I could hear talking in the rooms, the doors all still have the papers on them, but if i approach a wall i can hear arguing or talking inside. if i'm not near a room i hear whispering and muttering in the hallway.

I have noticed one more oddity, when I open my apartment door, the whispering, the sounds, everything stops dead. It goes completely quiet. As soon as i either enter or leave it starts again.

I also talked to my leasing agent today about breaking my lease, apparently since i'm in an expensive part of Seattle breaking my lease is going to cost me a fuckton, my apartment is already pretty expensive and i'm looking at about 2-3 months pay to save up enough to break it without going homeless or losing my job. I'm kinda stuck here for the next few months.

Look into your states renters rights/laws. Many states allow you to break a lease with no financial penalty. It'd be a hit on your credit and you'd have a shit referral from your current landlord but that'd be it.

The threat of a deposit being forfeited or a fine is usually a empty threat. They use it as a way to scare you into honoring your lease or figure you'll never fight "it".

Also, that's for simply being a shit and breaking your lease with no cause. If you fear for your safety(whether it be real or in your head) the parent company/landlord can't say "tough shit" and force you stay.

I don't know, I live in LA and California has freakishly forgiving and lax rental policies. Shit, they can't even evict you for up to six months of non-payment let alone for a justifiable reason. Ask your landlord if there are other people living on your floor.

Take a picture of the flyer and post it, it helps us to immerse ourselves better into your story and it proves that you story might be real.

Does your door have a peephole? Can you set up a camera so that it records audio and video through that hole? If there is a chance of clarifying things with this method, I'd try it.

Pull out other flyers on the floor and see if there are new ones the next day or so.

Tell me, how did the flyers get there in the first place? You said, that the door to the 3rd floor can only be opened by you or other people living there. Since there are no others did you see someone put the flyers there? If your story is made up this is quite a plothole and you just got busted. I still love you story though. Otherwise it's just getting creepier and creepier.

Can you put something like a piece of fishing line or tape on the door to the 3rd floor, so that you can see that it has been opened not by you, but by other "beings"?

Forgot if you mentioned it, but did you have friends over and confirm the noises etc?

Show your future recording of the camera or the one you just made here to you landlord and demand answers, or ask him if there were people living in your apartment before you and why there is no one else in the other apartments. Got home from work tonight, I've been picking up extra hours for the juicy overtime hours to pad my paychecks, but also because i just don't want to be at home.

Tonight felt different, Just as how i went about my first two months here never noticing what was happening, i think it never really noticed me, or bothered with me that much, it was as if i was just living near whatever this is. Tonight made me feel that i was no longer just an occupant of it's floor, but the focus of it's attention.

The moment I used my key to get into the floor i felt breathing down my neck. I didn't hear breathing, it was dead quiet the entire walk down the hall to my apartment. This is the first time since noticing the noises that i have not heard something in the hall. My own footsteps felt muted.

It was a breath on my neck, as if someone was standing directly to my right the entire time I walked down the hall. No noise or anything of moving air, just hot air blasting my neck every other step.

It smelled like a wet dog, but with a dusty kind of texture. it wasn't very strong though just enough to be noticeable.

The moment I entered my apartment it stopped and the smell went away. I'm starting to think there is something about my apartment itself that is keeping them out. I have only ever heard things outside of the apartment in the hall and in other units. Inside my own I have experienced nothing other than hearing shit through the wall once in awhile.

I can't tell if I'm actually safe in my apartment, or if it just wants me to feel safe.

ok, I listened to this and it's nothing spooky. I live in a house with my grandparents. If I'm in my room with the door closed and place my ear to the crack I can hear the same weird constant drone. I can also here small sounds of whatever they are doing..ie dropping or moving something, coughing or talking, etc. Every sound seems magnified by the crack compared to the door being open for some reason.

Also people wondering how outsiders might have gotten into the building:

I've lived in 8 different apartment buildings and most have their main door locked 24/7 or just during nights (like 10pm to 6am). Couple buildings had a phone next to the door and list of apartments. You can press the button of the apartment you want to contact and when you press the button a buzzer sounds in the persons apartment and when the person picks up the door phone he or she can talk to the person outside pressing the button. When he or she presses a button on the phone a buzzer sounds and the main door unlocks so person outside can get in. One apartment building even had a camera and you could see from your TV who you were talking to.

Sometimes people not living there buzzed me. Here is a list of people who asked me to buzz them in:
-two police officers
-people passing out flyers
-beggars
-people selling things door to door
-drunk people
etc.

Sometimes people who go outside for smoke unlock the doors manually so they stay open because they go outside for smokes alot and don't want to keep opening the door with their keys. Of course this is forbidden but can be done in all the apartment buildings here (it's handy when you are moving stuff).

Even in my current apartment which is build 2003 and is considered pretty new and well maintained I've come home to find out that the main door has been wedged open. Maybe people living in the first floor wanted to make the air circulate better during this hot summer?

The first building I ever lived in had a janitor's "office". A small room in the basement and a mail box next to it. I once managed to fish out a bunch of keys in a janitor's key ring with a metal coat hanger from there. It had keys to every room and place in that apartment building I shit you not. Even the utility key for every apartment there. I know because I tested it and opened my own apartment door with it. I even found a pool and sauna area from the basement which I didn't know even existed. And it was a pretty damn big pool too.

I used to live in Turku, Finland (Europe). I worked for Turku city as part time home nursing aid. They hired me just by me walking into their recruiting office when my cousin who was working there at the time recommended that I should join since I was out of work. We got bunch of keys and instructions what to do and got sent off alone to visit old people still living in their homes. We were supposed to do small cleaning, washing them (giving them baths), laundry and warm up food and make sure they take their medicine. Once I had a problem which I cannot clearly remember. It was some problem that some old person was living in an apartment building but I couldn't access there because he didn't want to give us the key for his home (in that case we had to knock) but the apartment building's main door was now locked and they had installed a key pad (very common) there. So nobody knew what to do. The old person didn't answer his or hers (cannot remember) phone and I couldn't access the apartment building because I didn't have a key and we didn't know the key pad number. Then the weird thing happened and not many people believe this story (I will come to this later but I've proved them wrong).

This old female worker there gave me a "utility key pad number" and she told me to try that but she said that not tell anybody about that and it's a key pad code that will open most doors to apartment buildings here. So I went and tried it and it worked. I had never ever heard anything about that sort of code and neither had any other workers but they didn't pay attention to our conversation. So I tried it to every apartment building I went the next day and it opened them all. It works in 4/5 cases in the whole city of 178 000 people. It's a 4 digit code you enter to a key pad and it opens the apartment building's main door. Some key pads had digits from 0 to 9 and numbers A and B. If the code didn't work I tried hitting the A button and usually it worked then.

So I told about this to my cousin and couple of closest friends and none believed it but I proved them all by opening different doors with that code. I once had to call the cops (another story) and even the cops didn't have access to that apartment building so I opened the door for them. So I assume not even the police is aware of this said code (at least not all).

This last 48 hours have been intense.

To preface, i work, i've been picking up hours, I normally work 5pm to 1:30am at this job but have been taking the plentiful amount of overtime available this week so i'm working maybe an additional 3-4 hours a day before my shift starts just to get out of the apartment.

Friday Night
My phone died while I was at work, ran out of battery, kinda shitty but not that big of a deal. I get home and press my floor on the elevator from the garage, it freaks out a little when i try to do so as it can't seem to accept my key for my floor. I keep at this for awhile and eventually it seems like it takes it, the light doesn't come on but the elevator starts moving. But it stops on the floor right below mine instead, the doors open and despite pressing my floor a few more times i get frustrated and just exit on this floor and take the stairs to my floor.

Now, these stairs are fucking creepy on their own. They smell like piss and the lights are shit. I moved up to my floor, used my key and entered to find all of the hall-lights completely dark like the power went out. I stumble around the dark a little, the normal noises are back as well as the breathing. It being pitch fucking black except for the one window in the middle of the hallway has me nearly shitting my pants.

I manage to get to my door and enter to find that my unit has lost power completely. Can't fucking do shit. I think of picking up a bag and getting the fuck out but I don't have anywhere to go, and can't call anyone as my phone is still dead as fuck without a charge. I lock the door, suck it up, take some sleeping shit cause I know I won't fall asleep on my own and pass the fuck out.

Saturday

I wake up alive, the power appears to be back on and I throw my phone on the charger. Once i managed to get it on I call the only coworker I have that kind of remotely is my friend. I told him I wanted to show him something and I would pay for his lunch if he came out.

This coworker is the guy who helped me get the job, he helped me move in, he's been to my place before.

So when i hear a knock on my door i kind of have a heart attack.
I open it to see my coworker who lets himself in, I ask him how he got into the building and the floor and he tells me that both doors were propped open and he kinda just let himself in as he knew the way.

He says off hand though "But your neighbors freak the fuck out of me."

Apparently, after he let himself in, as he was walking to my apartment one of the doors was open and there was a little boy staring at him, my coworker is kind of an energetic outgoing guy and said 'Hi' to the kid, who promptly told my coworker that he shouldn't be here and he needed to leave.

I explain everything to my coworker, the fliers on the door, the noises, the laughter. He kind of laughs it off and tells me that I'm probably just losing my mind, he reminds me that I did just go through a bad breakup, moved cities, started a new job, and don't talk to my friend or family as much as I used to and it's probably just stressing me out a bit.

He makes sense, I kind of agree, It's been stressful. I feel a bit silly.

we have lunch, he makes me feel better about the situation and as I walk him out of the building he points at a door and says "This is the one with that kid."
"Dude, there is a flier still in the door."

he gets a weird look on his face, and just grabs the doorknob, i freak out telling him that someone might live there and we would look like fucking crooks when just tells me that if there are people there then i can stop being paranoid and problem fuckin solved.

The doors unlocked, opens up to a completely fucking bare apartment.

Saturday (today) continued

My coworker nopes the fuck out of the building, says he'll see me at work tonight. I'm suprisingly calm. The unit is a copy of my own unit, the same floorplan. nothing out of the ordinary except that it smells like dried blood.

I stood outside of the door just wondering what the fuck was going on. I figure I need to fucking just do it. I go to each fucking door in my building and Knock.

No one answers at a single goddamned door.
And they're all locked.. except for that one unit.

Tonight

That picture is of my parking garage for the tenants in my building on all the floors, I know there were people on the other floors. I've seen them in the lobby and i've seen their cars in the garage. Tonight when I got home from work it was empty, completely empty. My car was the only one in the garage.

I got on the elevator to my unit, it smelled like dried blood and urine (urine was expected) in the elevator.
The hall was dimmer than normal, the lights were on but maybe half-brightness. They seemed to get dimmer as i walked down the hall. Laughter echoed in teh hall, i heard it behind each door for each unit, as if there was a child on the other side with their ear pressed to the door and laughing. When i reached my unit and opened the door the lights flicked back to normal and the laughter stopped.

I don't know what to do anymore, There are legitimate concerns that I have lost my sanity. I did go though a LOT of stress before my move and in the last two months. Can this stress turn itself into this terrifying fear that I have to halucinate all of this?

You go to your leasing office and tell them, that you have seen children running around in that one apartment and that your coworker can confirm that.
You tell them that the elevator is not functioning as it should and that it might be broken.
You tell them the stairs and your floor smells of piss and blood.
You tell them you had no power whatsoever on your floor and in your unit and you haven't been imformed by anyone about it (sometimes it's because of streetworkers etc. being close to powerlines and it's safer to just cut the power). No other lights were on, neither on the floor nor in your unit and that you eventually tripped on the stairs and were injured by it.
You tell them that anyone can come in easily through the doors and that the security lock to the 3rd floor doesn't work.Coworker can confirm.
You tell them you can't sleep because people are making noise and are too loud.
You tell them you want your fucking money back or you sue the shit out of them.
You have plenty of reasons now and even if they don't believe you, you can still record it on camera.

Find a way to get out of there. Ask someone if you can stay at their place for a few nights. Don't know if you have lawyer friend but that might help you a lot. No need to mention spooky ghosts. OP, in all kindness, even if there are no ghosts or spirits, even if your building isn't haunted, even if there is nothing there at all, it doesn't help your situation. You can see yourself that you are slowly freaking out. That you fear to live there. It's not getting better, is it?! Either you stay there and live each day with that fear even if nothing ever happens or you get.the.fuck.out! You can't rest and be prepared for work like that. You won't find your peace in a place like this either...

If you manage to find out what out what it is that's haunting you and this place, you may find a way to cast those spirits/demons out. At least there might be a possibility to communicate with them, I don't know. Maybe we got some experts here who can tell you exactly what you are dealing with here. If not, don't worry. I've had a vaguely similar spooky apartment experience, but not to anywhere near that level.

I stayed in this tiny little ground floor apartment in the cheapest complex in town for far longer than I'd like to admit. Lots of people lived there, but very few stayed for more than like 6 months.

For roughly the last Year that I stayed there, the people above me exhibited some truly odd behavior. There was Constantly someone coming or going, like, it was as if 3 people shared this one bedroom apartment and each one of them had a completely separate, work schedule. Furthermore, the sound of marbles being dropped, as mentioned by others in the thread, was a near constant occurrance. However, as others mentioned the sound of a marble rolling off a table and on to the floor, this would more frequently sound like someone had dropped a big bag of marbles and let them scatter across the floor. I have yet to come up with an explanation for the sound. There were more little things, but nothing that was ever truly spoopty.

I guess the lesson to learn here is that ghosts love to play marbles?

I apologize for not replying. Something happened tonight.

I went to bed, but I couldn't sleep, I heard scratching from the other side of my bedroom wall. It scratched for hours and kept me awake, honestly i didn't want to go into the hall to see whatever was making the noise. When I couldn't take it anymore it stopped, and i heard a child's voice through the wall asking me something.

It kept on repeating it's question, muffled by the wall but the inflection turning up at the end making it a clear it was a question.

I heard footsteps move down the hall and I heard a loud knock at my door.

I have no idea why I didn't shit the bed, it was 2am, no human would knock on a door this late. I went to the door, looked through the peep hole and saw nothing. I know if I didn't open the door and check you guys would never let me live it down. I can't pussy out cause I will never find answers, so I opened the door. There was absolutely nothing there, I looked down the hall and nothing was different, not even a scratch on the wall.
