I'm just bored enough though that if Its up there and there is interest I'll stream it.

I thought it was pretty cute.

Heavy Symbolism film.

Depp's character is The Fool tarot, notice he always has the bag, only survives by luck and help of others. His pal dead in the bookstore hung upside down with bent leg, The Hanged Man.

People that had the book died; one drown ( Water ), one burned ( fire ), one found hanging ( air ), Depp almost killed by a pile of falling bricks ( earth ).

I'd love to see all the people that HAVE to jump in threads about things they don't like a say something do that irl. I think it would be funny as shit and illustrate how immature it is to need to spout opposing shit at every turn.

Football at the park - cave trolls screaming 'American football isn't real football'

this would make a good tv show and I bet the caveys would love it for a while till they notice how juvenile they are acting.

Haha condensing the knowledge is a real problem when starting a new life yes.

The purpose is the regain all the past knowledge, but as you may have read 10.000 books in one life, you can't read them in a new life. But you have to keep the memory. So how to proceed? How to regain the knowledge of 10.000 books in a new life, without reading them?

By contemplation of the world and meditation. That's all it all about.

But remember, you may have not read 10.000 books in past lives, so accessing to this kind of knowledge may be difficult (it's usually possible to know about it when you read the book, if you understand it well, it means that you need to read it (funny, isn't it?)).

I would say one of the more genius things about this movie is that it plays upon something that all cultures seem to have ingrained in them.

An inherent respect for printed books. And the older it is the better. We assign books some sort of inherent magical capacity.

And I think the only reason why is because it is something that transcends time..at least potentially. A tome of knowledge or thoughts and feelings of a person that can last multiple lifetimes and become part of multiple people.

Simon gets into all sorts of wacky hijinks

Watched it years ago and most of the points flew over my head. It makes a lot more sense now and the slow pacing really lets you search for the details that are all over the place. It was well done.

Great film, one of my favourites. Particularly love the soundtrack (whose composer died just last year sadly). It was like a Hammer horror, but with a budget.

Does everyone get the ending and why Balkan failed? A couple people have mentioned the connection to the Tarot, but do any of you know the specifics? I think that's what throws a lot of people off.

This is the movie that both set me on a Luciferian path but also got me to want to sell used books for a living. As an exceptional bibliophile this movie was like watching a film about luxury cuisine.

For those interested, The Ninth Gate was based on a book called The Club Dumas. There's a whole plot involving an Alexandre Dumas manuscript that was dropped from the movie. I was considering picking it up for myself to read one of these days.

Also, if anybody wants another great satanic mystery movie adapted from a novel, check out Angel Heart.

>The Club Dumas.

I personally found this one of the rare occasions where the film is better than the book. The book deals with this group that is into Dumas' "Three Musketeers" book WAY too much, the Ninth Gate part is a sub-plot. I found the Dumas part boring, probably as I never read the "Three Musketeers" which it references constantly. Thank goodness Polanski used only the Ninth Gate subplot for the film.
>>
>>14889848

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and thought it much better than the movie -- which I also enjoyed.

>The book deals with this group that is into Dumas' "Three Musketeers" book WAY too much, the Ninth Gate part is a sub-plot.

The two plots are related, I think.

The Club Dumas, in turn, was based on a novel entitled, The Devil in Love.

One of the best book suggestions I ever got from /x/ was "The Master and Margarita", written by Mikhail Bulgakov. Wow, think Alice in Wonderland with a Satanic twist as written by a depressed Russian doctor.

I think you'd like it -- or you've read it already.

The Master and Margarita was one of my favorite books in high school. I haven't read it in years, though.

Really, why some in this thread think an ending with Depp having sex with a demon in front of a burning castle set on fire by a failed ritual that saw a man burned alive in screaming pain is silly hard to understand -- just usual /x/, "I'm a jaded hardcore basement wizard, nothing fazes me." Well there is a lot of truth to that in a way...
>>

There is a lot of truth to that.

There were basically three schools or approaches in the movie: the aging Satanic perverts, the German scholar, and the power-hungry Balkan. I've encountered all three.

>>
>>14900863

>Yes, I do. I read the book and you haven't.

I read the book, it's boring, I don't recall it spelling out who she was one way or the other.

I think casuals just automatically assign any 'evil' character in a book or film as 'devil' and think they get it.
>>
>>14901440
>I don't recall it spelling out who she was one way or the other.

It does. The book is actually inspired by an earlier work called, The Devil in Love.

>I think casuals just automatically assign any 'evil' character in a book or film as 'devil' and think they get it.

Wholly irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
>>
>>14901428

Start at the beginning and read it through to the end. only this time for content. When you get to the part where the Irena Adler is identified as the Scarlet Woman, let us know.

>in b4 "lol I trold u :o)" response

>>14901489

I also suggest reading, The Devil in Love, wch Irena buys for Corso in Venice, I think it was. It was Perez-Reverte's inspiration and the source of the Lucifer plot. That has nothing to do with the Scarlet Woman, either.
>>
>>14901524

>Direct me to which page it says the girl is Satan/Lucifer or whoever...

>Start at the beginning and read it through to the end. only this time for content. When you get to the part where the Irena Adler is identified as the Scarlet Woman, let us know.

In other words you have nothing.

I said the book does NOT say who the girl is, see: >>14901440

AND that in the FILM she is identified with the Whore of Babylon: >>14901462

I went there.

I live in LA, my wife and I were just driving around Beverly Hills, Hollywood Hills, etc., and there were signs for a huge open house. We looked like between us we had $1.50 but we went anyways.

It was a long driveway that led up to huge gates that were open, and a breathtaking view of the ocean to Century City to Los Angeles; it was spectacular. They were asking $3.95 million, and assumed we were scouts for someone. They treated us very nicely, champagne and all, and gave us a tour of this ranch house.

It was haunted. There are just no two ways around it. Everything was creepy; there were things that would catch your eye and not be there. It had a dark oppressive feel to it.

Mind you, we had no idea this was Polanski's house, just that we were having a bit of fun at some realtor's expense.

The realtor kept saying they were open to demolishing the property; like, a lot. Kept saying it. I wondered but didn't ask why, as it was in great shape, just old fashioned. We toured the little gatehouse, where the earwitness to the slayings was; the front yard, where Polanski was stabbed to death, the front room where they wrote "Helter Skelter" on the wall in human blood, with never a mention from the realtor that this house had history behind it. Evil history behind it.

We left as though being chased, eventually. Our ruse that we were somehow sophisticated enough to be connected to someone who could buy this property was wearing thin, so we left.

It was about a year before we realized that we had been inside hell, and that hell was not empty.
>>
>>14902306

Much as I like your story it doesn't really gibe with the history of the house after the murders:

Doesn't have to and, since it was written for adults, there was no need. Skilled readers don't need to be spoon-fed.

I see now why you were bored. For you, the plot was just a bunch of unrelated events and characters, with the Scarlet Woman wandering aimlessly and pointlessly throughout.
>>

>>
>>14902359

You make less sense all the time.

Book does not say she is Devil/Satan/Lucifer. Page 343 has her talking about the devil as a different entity than herself.

So your new fall back argument is that YOU read between the lines and know what the book is really saying even though it's not in the book?
>>
>>14902376
It would have been a funny video. My wife and I were in t-shirts and jeans driving a '64 Chevy up the driveway, looking basically lost. The road ended at their gate, so if it was shut, that would have been a hellova u-turn.

The new house looks like shit. The old house had a front lawn with a lot of grass, even though it sloped down pretty bad. It was a huge lot. It looks like some Arab built a tacky palace there now.
