Might be a cult, might be a really secretive branch of Jehovah's Witnesses, but fuck it, I'll share it here. An old high school friend recently had a chat with me, and probed me about what I was doing since graduating. I told him my barely-worthwhile sob story about how I'm currently having job issues and feeling pretty shitty on the matter. He informed me to meet up with him and two of his "mentors", as he put it, the following week, and we arranged to do so. While doing this, he kept repeating a mantra that they taught him, about how we need to not think about what we want to do, but "how we want to live".

I thought this would be an interview about some possible job, or even just general career building advice, so I went in with a relatively open mind. I was to meet them in a coffee shop, and my friend and one of his mentors (who I would learn is beneath the second in their hierarchy.) met me inside. They were both wearing suits, and the formality put me off a bit, but we began talking. The Beta Mentor, we'll call him, began talking to me about similar things as my friend did, even repeating the same meme phrase: "How do you want to live", probing me on my past, and what my life plan is. I answer to the best of my abilities, and the conversation stalls somewhat until Alpha mentor shows up, accompanied by someone who wasn't dressed up and remained absent from the conversation, and proceeds to ask the same things that his beta associate did, repeating the same phrase over and over, how it's what I need to focus on, and then going on about dollar store positive thinking philosophy.

He then begins to talk up himself and his vaguely defined organization, about how it's made the best version of so many people including himself, and finishes by asking if I'd want to become the best version of myself I can be. I respond by saying "I'm open to hearing about it", and the Alpha becomes visibly upset for a brief instance, and quickly spits out "yes or no?" I say yes with a note of confusion, not wanting to embarrass my friend in front of the man he clearly respected deeply, and the Alpha mentor kept going on with similar questions to the "best you can be" probe. Things like "do you want to have your negative thoughts turned around", "do you want to change your life", and so on. Each time, when I tried to give an answer stating how I'd like to at least hear him out, he'd put on the same stoic expression and demand a yes or a no. After this, he decided to go on about how important he believes keeping one's word is, and asks me once again, yes or no. I said yes, to get this over with, but began to sense a pattern.

Well, I know of a couple I've read recently, though maybe not necessarily cryptids. One from the 17th century is a short pamphlet titled, "rue and wonderfull; a discourse relating a strange and monstrous serpent, or dragon, lately discovered and yet living to the great annoyance and divers slaughters both men and cattel, by his strong and violent poyson." It relates an incident of a purported dragon in Sussex, England.

In a similar vein, I have two other dragon books that I've been meaning to read, "The Evolution of the Dragon" (1919) and "Dragons and Dragon Lore, (1928). But again, haven't read them yet, and they're maybe a bit more recent than you're looking for.

Moving to another monster, I can recommend The Book of Were-wolves (1865) if you're curious about the history of the belief in lycanthropy. Less recommended is a book I'm currently reading, "Werwolves" (1912), which is much more credulous about the whole thing than Sabine Baring-Gould's work.

If you're more interested in Irish lore, William Butler Yeats' "The Celtic Twilight" has fairies, ghosts, and a little bit of sorcery. Still working on some other books on fairies, so I won't tough on those until I have a better grasp of what exactly I'm reading.

Bumping for more though, I wish I had something on Sasquatch or the Jersey Devil or something.

Most of the driver's remains were not recoverable; however, small fragments of bone, teeth and hair were extracted from the crater and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel.

Read something else already, there's a world of good books that the powers that be don't want you reading. Ie, almost any of them, seriously they're imbecilic enough to think ruling over illiterates would actually advantage them. The heavily shilled shit tends to be chosen to be degrading and especially shitty. Remember literature classes, how they focused on shit-tier classics? The good shit is legitimately found in secondhand scifi. Dig into the little-knowns and find better gems than this. Even if you love dystopian fiction, there's better gems than this.

Everyone ought to read 1984, but everyone ought to read something else, too. Seriously. Read twelve books this year. I can read a book in a day, you can read a book in a month.

Let’s get the basics down. I was a 24 year old college student who studied in toronto. I had a shit-paying secretary job and no semblance of a social life, so playing video games was the only real way to entertain myself on the weekends. There was no way for me to afford new games and consoles without going bankrupt, so I did a fair bit of garage sale trawling. In the last few years i’d built up quite the console collection. Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube, N64, you name it - I had it. After a while I realised that reselling games I found actually raked in more cash than being a secretary. Quit that job, started trawling full time. Survived a few years like that. I’m through uni now, but it turns out that my degree was worthless - the amount of jobs in education are dwindling quickly. So I still go out looking games. Well- up until a few days ago. I was doing my usual route when I passed by a garage sale that hadn’t been listed as happening. The driveway was completely empty, except for a pale old man who was standing in the driveway without his pants on. As I pulled by, he made eye contact with me and gestured vigorously at his exposed lower half. I kept driving. The day went on with nothing weird happening. I picked up quite the haul, getting more than seven copies of World Poker Stars 2001 and Club Penguin Game Day each. I was driving home when I saw the naked gentleman again. I was going to keep driving, but then I noticed something. He was waving a gamecube game over his head. “Shit on my dick and call me a leopard” I said, pulling my car violently over, crashing through his front yard.

I got out of the car and vomited on the ground. “How much for your computer game?” I said slurring my words. “I don’t know how much I can sell this to you for” he said, pausing for effect “it was my grandson Sven’s game before he drowned in a bathtub accident” I threw a crumpled ten dollar bill at his feet and grabbed the game. “See you later, old-timer” I shouted as I reversed my car out of his yard into his RV and then took off. I was speeding down the highway when I realized I didn’t even know what game this was. I opened the case and saw one of those blank discs developers use. It was a gamecube mini disc and it had the words “Resident Evil: Barry” written on it. “Sick” I whispered to myself “It must be an expensive demo disc”. I raced home, and when I got there I didn’t even remember to lock my car. I bolted up the stairs to my apartment and put the game in my XBOX. The intro started up exactly how it always does, with the S.T.A.R.S. team being attacked by zombies. When i got to the main menu, I instinctively pressed “continue game” to my surprise, there was one save file - and it said “SVEN”. I thought about it for a few seconds mulling over the possibilities. Upon coming to a logical and tasteful conclusion, I deleted the “SVEN” file and created a new file called “‘SVEN sucks donkey cock”. Then I clicked the begin new game button. Y’know how Resident Evil always starts with a question asking you about how you play and stuff? Well the demo build must be different because instead of asking me about hiking or some gay shit it asked me whether or not I knew what it was like to drown.
