Possible, maybe. But what would be the point, exactly? Is it supposed to be motivation for us to develop said AI? After the AI is in existence, what is the point in eliminating those that didn't contribute? As it is, it's hardly motivation for humans to get going on development. The idea that MAYBE we will be punished otherwise, and punished for that reason alone. Doesn't seem very realistic to me.
