This is the right answer, but people make mistakes.
Free softwares will give you a really basic denfense against common threats, but if you're paranoid about hackers or similiar you will have to buy one.
I used Avira in the past, never had problems with it. Then I switched to something more serious.
I don't have a really deep understanding of antivirus so take what I said with a pinch of salt. Maybe ask /g/?
