if you need to access it from different devices, go for a NAS. if you don't - just buy a docking station and be done with it as long as SATA drives exist. i have 4 different external HDDs i just swap in and out - it's really convenient. i'm using a sharkoon docking station and they're great - good power switch, good stability of the disk.
