the episode was about Sadie's weakness, and how even though she had constant reinforcement by her mother and steven, just being told "you can do it", isn't always enough to overcome anxiety.

It was much more realistic and in-line with the characters for Steven to go on stage, and they still got in Sadie's character development at the end, with her reconciling with her mother and singing the song in front of steven without any problems.

keep in mind the girl was beat red after accidentally singing in front of steven, to go from that to singing in front of your entire town as the main event of a show is way too much to ask of her.

My favorite part of this show is the fact that it dives really really deep into relationships and fusion is just an allegory for that. Its really good storytelling and it isnt ham fisted in and shoved in your face. The crystal gems all have such huge personality defects and its good to see them take codependence and abusive relationships seriously.
