But that's the exact opposite of its appeal.

Code Geass is an anime original with no possible spoilers. Re:Zero was spoilered out the ass from day one.
The appeal to Re:Zero is that it's a series designed to make the MC suffer as much as literally possible. It's not "what could go wrong next," it's "how is he going to be made to suffer this time."

It's closer to the appeal of something like Madoka Magica.

Re:Zero also had a hell of a hook for a first episode. Everything starts out all cheery normie fantasy SAO-clone feeling and then kicks over to everyone dying via bloodbath.

Well, my point with the spoilers is that it probably would've made something like Geass not quite as good, since it played off of a completely different dynamic of absurdity.
Meanwhile, if anything, the spoilers actually kind of helped Re:Zero, since it gave a bit more background and detail to all the suffering.

Or at least, I always just assume that every anime I watch is based on a manga four story arcs ahead. So I typically keep discussion to a minimum until I've seen the whole thing.
