I finally decided to start reading again and came across this poster. I will be printing this out in B&W. Can any kind anon add some minimalist spacey and sci-fi images on the sides so it does not look empty

I'm going to assume that you have decent baby knowledge of photoshop for this.
Never ever delete, erase, or tweak any pixels unless you know what you're doing. Usually studying coloring helps with knowing what you're doing and unless you know this junk just don't touch pixels.
Many people do the mistake of editing by selection and hitting the delete key. Big mistake. Wrong. End of the world for you, buddy.
Use that cute little "Quick selection tool". However, stay away from refine edge. If you do use it only shift your edge. Do not smooth, do not contrast or feather.
Create a selection of what you want to render only. Make sure that this selection only includes what you want to render. After creating a selection of what you want to render, create a mask. This is crucial, it won't destruct the image. This lets you use black and white brush to go right into the edges and paint the transparency onto your image.
You should ALWAYS work with the mask. Never with the selection. While working with the mask it doesn't matter what you use, your trackpad, digitizer, touch screen or mouse, you should work patiently and with an iron fist. Go over those lines nicely.
When you think you're done with your work, you aren't.
Test on white, black and gray backgrounds and see if you didn't miss any edges.
Look at the original image just in case you didn't cut off the render's limbs.

I haven't used the magic wand in years. Only the quick selection tool for basics and the polygonal lasso tool for straight lines like the sword. Sometimes I use the elliptical tool as well, for round edges. But the most important tool is the brush tool, I use 1-10 px round brush, 100 hardness, 100% opacity and 100% flow. Opacity can change as needed.
Also use "X" to change between black and white colors quickly to edit the mask.

I didnt say it should be called that, just thats its the closest term I can think of and is a good search term if you want to find relevant methods.
I come from a VFX background where Rendering means something completely different, so to use that term for that usage makes no sense to me.

That's just not entirely true. Maybe in the context of some request, but I've seen a lot of people ask for a "render" and what they wanted was their image made into a vector graphic. And vice-versa.

You're right, although I just wanted to point out that it was correctly used and it could also mean another range of things. In the context of this thread that's what it can mostly mean. Vector graphics fit in it as well. But not many in here have the time or knowledge to vectorize an image.
