it's too bulbous and doesn't really fit the thin font he's used. Nothing on his rice really screams round or squidgy, it's lots of thin and elegant lines. You might say the icons are fat and blobby but they aren't, for his rice thinner is better and the blob he has atm doesn't work very well.

Using flat black is often times a horrible move. It creates a very harsh and stark contrast and comes off way to bold. Replacing black with #252525 or even #181818 if you need darker is generally a better looking color combo.

Feel free to use any color you want though, its your phone. But when you post here and someone tells you how to improve it don't throw a fit.

I hate to be that one guy, but after seeing a few of the phone threads on /w/ and seeing all these god-tier setups, I wanted to join in, but...

Am I doing this right? After reading these guides, I made a few changes, but still not sure. Also, would someone mind explaining what the hell "ricing" is to me? I've been flashing ROMs and rooting for a while now, but I have no clue what "ricing" is.

On a side note, I know the icon color clashes a lot with the overall color of the wallpaper, but glass icons are god.

I'm working on a project, but I need to find a good musicplayer widget for KWGT.
Would any of you kind gents know any good ones?
(I'm going for a clean look, similar to the basepack ones)

As for your rice, I'd personally change font. The difference between the two walls is also kinda jarring, maybe go for two of a similar style from him? I.e. fully colored, or sketchy, etc. since a fully rendered pic looks really noticeable next to a sketch.

Looks good. Only thing is, of course, I made the wallpaper for a kind of pale design, and the dark black obviously clashes with that. I've never been a big widget guy, so if you can't get your media utilities to work, then I don't really know what to do. Also, I would suggest making the banner you made at the bottom be floating as opposed to stretching from one side of the screen to the next. Other than that, good.

Sup people. Some may recognise this oldie from the past few threads ago, I'm still using it but would like to revamp a few parts. I wanna change the app section, tapping each section shows the apps list
This looks horrible, I want a synergy between the background (with best neko) and the apps. If possible I wanna try not to use icon packs because of the varieties not supported. I personally do rough sketches to figure out what goes where and whatnot, then try to do a mockup in photoshop and then start assembly on my phone. The anon who did reply to you gave good advice, if you're trying to fix/work on a current rice it can be very helpful to just play with it, sort it out as you go. Too much empty space? What could you put in it, what do you need? Music player? Weather? Clock? It's different for people (i.e. I didn't add a clock because I didn't need one, but some people might want one so they might add one). Just think a little. A surprising number of people in these threads seem to want a paint-by-numbers for ricing and it's just generally not that great a way to go at it. At its heart, a lot of this stuff plays on basic design principles. You don't really need to go take a design class or whatever (I certainly didn't) but actively putting effort and thought into your rice goes a long way.

So guys I need your help. I just started on a rice, and to add some flair, I wanted to give some solid colors some "weathered" textures. Where do you get these that don't look stupid? I somewhat understand how to apply textures and patterns, but it never looks right when I do. Any help would be appreciated.

Search around for "weathered textures" or "grunge textures". Deviant art will have some but anywhere you look there will be a lot of junk one to sift through first. As for applying then find a tutorial and follow it. If something doesn't look right post the rice you have with the messed up weathered effect so we can see what it looks like and can offer better advice. If you also include a link to the texture you are using as well as your wallpaper (preferably the psd file) someone else might be able to help you apply it better.

What are you using? Zooper? KLWP? UCCW? If you don't know what those are, read the guide.

If you do know what you're using, google guides for it. There are also examples and syntax I think natively provided when you edit text, depending on what you're using. For example, in KLWP if you edit a line of text and scroll down to find Functions > mi(type) and press it, it'll display a list of all the functions you can use to display music info (for example, $mi(artist)$ gives you the current artist).

The icons are covering the wallpaper, the choice of color for the date/time script are bad and barely readable except maybe for the first one, same for the vertical text on the right, you have multiple screens but you don't take advantage of them, the difference in color between the different screen doesn't really look uniform (my opinion), you left the page indicator which doesn't look good and makes your wallpaper feel a bit 'heavy'. That's about it. I would delete the dock and put the apps in the right side of each wallpaper to make it lighter.
Apart from that, the wallpapers in themselves look good in my opinion, and I like the icon pack.

You might try the one I used in my Rei Rice just up there, it's called Flight (Lite). I think it would match the typo more while still being white. Be careful that your text scripts stay readable which is not really the case on your middle wallpaper. Also, do you really need that many applications? Do you want to keep the wallpaper? I'd suggest trying to familiarize yourself with the whatever widget app you're using (Zooper, KLWP, UCCW, etc) and with a simple background first. When you know how to do exactly what you want to do, you can try to create personalized widgets tailored to the needs of your wallpaper, like my clock in >>1875981 for instance.

I wasn't able to figure out scrolling text myself, but a good alternative I found was the $tc(ell, text, numChars)$ function that lets you cut off text at a specified number of characters and adds an ellipses at the end.

The guides aren't going to have any thing in detail on rooting or how to flash a custom rom. It will vary between devices and the guides are made as generic as they can be.

Normally you need to root before you can flash a rom. Use your phone model (sm-g900f) to find proper guides for your specific phone. Your OS version is android 5.0, your software version is going to listed elsewhere in the about phone section of your settings. The rom version you need will be specifically listed and linked too in a thread on XDA. Its not something that you can just "do quickly" unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Rooting and even custom roms aren't necessary for that. They can help but you can easily recreate the look of many of these phones posted on the stock and unrooted rom your phone came with.

Not him but not a bad clone, would just stay away from thin fonts given that the font is generally thicker. Also the oyasumi font and the other fonts don't go well together in my opinion. That weather icon doesn't work as well, make it one color (white, probably). Also, just my opinion but the icons in the bottommost bar kinda are too homogenous, so the sudden phone-shaped icon kinda stands out. Try to make them similar sizes so they don't look too off, but also make them variable enough (i.e. not a circle then another circle).

I don't like the color you used for the upper search bar, it feels out of place. Same for the icons, while the black isn't a bad idea, I feel like there are too many icons and it get a bit all over the place. But the main problem here is the music player. Why are you cutting off the wallpaper like that? It feels like someone just pasted the album cover out of nowhere. The text script color has a strange color too. A bit more uniformity would do you good, because right now it's really messy. Have you thought of creating another second wallpaperbpage with only your music player and stuff? That would really look better in my opinion.

We're on marshmallow now. If your device/OEM is not shit then the upgrade is great. My Nexus has had surprisingly large performance tuning with the update. Also, the new security updates are great and I'm pretty sure they have not been offered to versions below 6.0

Lolipop is always trying to get Google to "verify my apps" whenever I install them. Banner notifications are shit. Noyze doesnt work. Widget locker doesnt work. YouTube background playback doesnt work on lots of devices and xposed is a hassle and very likely to brick your phone.
Im assuming all of these apply to marshmallow though my device only goes up to 5.1

Been using it for years now. I suppose that it's probably a lot shittier in terms of support for anything but Nexus devices though. Never had a problem with flashing or installing the framework
