Minimalist Wallpapers!

>What is minimalism?
Minimalism involves taking images and reducing them down to basic colors and removing most features. Most wallpapers will not include shadowing or faces, but this is subjective.

>Guide to Making Your Own
http://www.deviantart.com/art/Vector-Wallpaper-Tutorial-399883993

>Software
Use either Illustrator or Inkscape (both are free if you know what I mean).

>Requesters
1) Do not post images with incredibly intricate designs, vague or conflicting colors, or undefined edges, these make minimalizing very difficult
2) Be sure to thank the artist!

>Artists
1) Always upload as 1080p PNGs, try and post transparents too
2) Look over other people's works! We need good criticism if we want to improve!

First, I apologize about starting this thread with a request. It's been two months so I figure it's okay to request again.

Can someone do this picture of Mahoro for me? I don't think there's any minimalist wallpapers of Mahoro, let alone this one.
I understand that this image might be a lot of work, so you have my thanks in advance if you pick this up.

Oh god that looks terrible. Lines are all jagged and every border has a gap.

Recommend you redo it. Try using overlaps and order of front to make borders easier.

Oh that's gonna take quite a while.

Redo this in a vectoring program like Inkscape or Illustrator as well. This shouldn't take more than 1-2 hours at most, unless you try to recreate the flame effect.

Not really, like I said, use overlaps and order priority to quicken it.

In your wall, you've got black gaps between the borders of your colors because you outline the same border for each color, meaning there will be discrepancies.

Do what I do in this picture (with a vector program), whichever object comes first will fall under the one that comes next, so as you can see I only ever outline a border once. This is how I can prevent gaps and shorten the process easily.
>>
>>1752622
Also be careful about your edges, they're jagged as fuck. Less nodes, more handles.

Not him, but you need to redo all of the hair. It is incredibly choppy and far from being smooth at all. You are using way too many nodes and hardly any handles.

Do the opposite. Minimize nodes; maximize handles.
>>
>>1753169
As I said, I am not as good as some of you.
If the requester is happy with it, then so be it.
I could restart it, if he wants.
I've been using Illustrator for two weeks, hence why I am taking requests. I obviously want and need to get better. I could just work on personal things and whatnot, but as I can see in this thread no one has done requests anyways, except for me.
>>
>>1753169
Also, if you want to be an asshole and negatively criticize my work, then why don't you take this persons request instead of complaining about the work of the nice people who do so?
>>
>>1753171
>>1753173
Requester here, it's fine with me, no need to redo it if you don't desire to. Also, I don't really think that was negative criticism, they were just being stern.
>>
>>1753174
Well, I mean, it's not very nice to just tell me I have to redo the entire hair because it's choppy. I mentioned that I wasn't amazing. If you weren't happy with it, you would have told me.
>>
>>1753175
Like I said, it's good with me. I guess you could work on it for the sake of practice, but that's completely up to you.
>>
>>1753171
>>1753173
>>1753175
Haha, can't take any form of criticism, can you? Yeah, you mentioned you aren't as good. I am telling you how you can be just as good. You are supposed to take that as a piece of advice and not as an insult. Like >>1753174 has said, I am being stern/blunt.

Also, I could very easily do this image if I wanted to, but I don't. I don't care much for the minimalism design. That doesn't mean I can't comment and give advice on these minimalist vectors, considering the principles about node and handle manipulation are very similar (and much easier) when compared to full vectors that I do.
>>
>>1753171

>>1753173

Also don't rush out requests in fact take as long as you can, I'm still not done with the first one yet, any ways stay chill man
>>
>>1753180
>Damn man i've been using inkscape for less than 2 weeks and I haven't had any criticism so it must mean I have a nack for this shit

Not necessarily. I don't comment and critique every image. It is pretty random when and which ones I critique, if at all. Considering you have only used the program for 2 weeks, I can guarantee you that I can find flaws and errors in your images, just like his.
>>

>>1753215
I don't feel like going in detail for all of them, but many of them fall into similar issues. We're ignoring the animal one since it is incredibly simplistic, so 1 starts with the first girl.

1: Many of the tips at the front of the hair lack curvature They are incredibly dull. You need to use the handles at the tips and curve every piece of hair in a certain direction. This also applies to the tips at the bottom. A lot of the thin hair is also very lumpy. Draw them as separate objects over the other hair to make it easier. You are also missing a large chunk of the hair that should be over her left shoulder. There is also color peeking at the neck.

2. Same issues with the hair. The coloring is also horrendous, especially for the skin. Add more shading in the HSB scale. Generally 18-24 is a good range, and depends on the image. The inner white lines are also very inconsistent and messy, especially on the frilly skirt.

3. Same issues with the hair. The inner white lines are very messy like in 2. The hands are also crudely drawn and very sharp, and you are missing a finger from her right hand that should be under her left. Her right knee is too pointy. Smooth it out.

4. Same issues with the hair. You completely removed the knot on her left arm. Her right hand is incredibly poor. I know you didn't have fingers in the original, but mimic the look of the index finger on the other fingers. She is pressing all her fingers to the ground, not just one. The toes look very poor and quickly done as well.

5. Same issues with the hair. The pony tail is also incredibly poor. Do no use sharp curves for the knots. It looks like ass. Instead, use smooth curves. Many of the internal coloring is very poor and inconsistent, especially for the hair clips, and the shapes around the stomach.
>>
>>1753243
Regardless of who pointed out the flaws it has become a good motivator to keep on doing this, It also seems like hair is my troubled area should probably work on that
>>
>>1753116
Eh, ought to be 1080p. Edges are jagged and there's a weird white border around some of the objects. The proportions look off as well; that hand could be better.

Question: The rules ITT is not giving heavy detailed images for vectors "Do not post images with incredibly intricate designs, vague or conflicting colors, or undefined edges, these make minimalizing very difficult" so what if I post one image, then a slightly less detailed image?

Dear god, please read the tutorial in the OP and try again. You aren't making vectors in a proper program. You are making shit ass rasters, exporting in jpg, and putting almost no effort into the image. If you want to recrate what you have, you will have to spend a large amount of time retracing the lines with fills, which this tutorial does not explain, since minimalism images tend to have no lineart. You would have to go read the tutorials in the vector thread to learn how to make filled lines, and then you would have to know how to properly layer and fill in colors for specific shapes.

Basically, you have to put in a lot more effort (at minimum a few hours) so you don't create absolute shit.

No duh dipshit.

Reading comprehension is more important than how fast you can read, since apparently skimming those past three posts you didnt realize I was saying the exact opposite of what you were bitching about.

I mean did you even read the filenames>?

Fair enough. I was running on 2 hours of sleep and it was 2 AM, so forgive me not taking the time to read it all the way through.

Your examples are still pretty terrible. Your best bet is to do it yourself since what you ask for is vague and shit in the examples shown. It is rare enough that someone does a simple minimalist request, and I highly doubt anyone will be able to do filled lines properly, since most of these people do not know how to make them.

Color peeking all over the place. Put the image in front of a very bright green background, and you will see all the spots clearer. Take advantage of layers. Put any object that is below in layer under other objects that are above it. This should get rid of all the color peeking.

>>
>>1754399
If you make it in a vector program like Illustrator or Inkscape, the image can be infinitely scaled. All you do is vector trace the image, export it at 300/600 PPI/DPI (which is an absurdly high resolution), and then downscale it into a 1920x1080 background that you can make in many programs. If you have both Illustrator and Photoshop, you can open Ai files (once they are done of course) in Photoshop as Smart Objects, which allows you to resize the image without quality loss before exporting, which saves some time.

But If someone can come up with one of lain with a pastel background and her set to the left or right of the picture then that would be really awesome.

Not him, but I see the same issues he is talking about. If you did this in Illustrator, make sure you export as Type Optimized (Hinted) and not Art Optimized (Supersampling). That should fix the aliasing edges.

Is this any better? I don't know what would be causing the pixely edges on the hair. I used Live Paint for this one, so maybe that's it. I'm using Type Optimized (Hinted). Pic related is 150ppi instead of 300ppi

>>1758669
I also made this. I just started with the base (basically >>1758755) then I added lines for the shading boundaries and used pathfinder divide to cut each shape into pieces.

>>
>>1759065
>>1759066
>>1759070
The aliasing is still clearly visible. Lowering the resolution won't fix the issue. It simply makes it harder to see because the overall quality is less. I don't know if Live Paint has an effect on the aliasing since I don't use it. I know to avoid it like the plague considering it is filled with tons of problems. You should probably just get in the habit of doing everything manually with fills. All of my vectors are done that way, and if exported with type Optimized (Hinted), have little to no aliasing issues. Considering minimalism images don't take much time, it should't add much more overall.

Guess that one's unsalvagable then. Should I be using Interlaced or not? Is the shape builder tool ok to use instead of live paint?
Here's a picture of my work so far on Asuka. Thoughts?
>>
>>1759073
No, do not use Interlaced. All that does is load the entire image in a lower quality initially. You have probably seen those images where the whole image loads but looks pixelated, and then after a few passes, looks clear. The problem is it bloats the file size and you don't want that. None (progressive scan mode) means the image will load top to bottom, line by line, like you normally see. The image takes longer to load, but lowers the file size, which is what you want.

Yes, the shape builder tool is preferable. All it does is delete the parts outside of the selected areas, so it is basically making a fill right on top of the line. However, it comes with its own issues. Exporting in Type Optimized (Hinted) fixes overall aliasing throughout the image as compared to Art Optimized (Supersampling), but if colors are overlapping on top of each other, the coloring underneath can "peek" out, depending on the color difference. Art Optimized (Supersampling) fixes that issue, but it degrades the aliasing everywhere else.

What I do in that situation is do everything normally with the shape builder tool, export in Type Optimized (Hinted), check all areas where there is color overlapping (basically all the shadows at the edges of the image on top of the base colors), and see if it is obvious. If it is, adjust all handles for the base color to go inwards, so that the shadow is not overlapping. It will honestly depend on the coloring if you even have to do that. Generally black and white colors are the most obvious. The others tend to not cause an issue.

As for any thoughts, I can't really give any. Once I see it completed with a comparison to the original, I can tell you what is lacking.
