Couple things.

1. Criticism on my rendering job would be appreciated.

2. I'm really bad at wallperification, could somebody make a 1920x1080 wallpaper out of this? Her on the right side, rule of thirds, etc. A nice color in the background, with maybe gradient or a glow or shadow effect, just something so it's not a boring plain color. I'd prefer a dark color, but a light one that's not an ugly color would be okay too. Picky, I know. Thanks in advance!

And for the render, I masked it with the brush, and worked my way around the entire edge by hand. It took me forever, so I was hoping it looked alright.

I've always thought that. It's why despite the fact that image is in 16:10 and perfect for my monitor setup, I'm not sure if I'll use it.

That image bothers me in the way you describe, but it's also one of the few background worthy images of that Book/Manga/Anime.

I picked this image up from one of the first IMTs and there are few major things that are bugging me. But I am rather sure that they weren't fixed back then.
The first request is the removal of the arm next to the top left corner.
The second is to remove the two lines which probably originate from the source image. They are above the girl and on the black rabbit that is farthest to the left.
The third request is to somehow make her dress longer so that is covers at least the girl's panties.
I hope it is not too hard to do these correction.

I just did some touch-up.
The "secret" is to place a uniform, but contrasting, color on a lower layer.
Zoom in close and areas which should be erased (or which _shouldn't_ have been) show clearly.
Add and subtract pixels as needed.
When everything looks right, delete the "background" layer and post.

Hey Neutrino, did you use the magic wand tool for the selection? If yes, try playing around with the Refine Edge tools after your selection. that way you can get rid of the jagged line.

Shift Edge is very helpful to get rid of some color that's left from the background because you can easily shift your selection further in and...

Feather makes your selection smoother (I used 1px feather). This works well if you want a quick and mostly clean selection in case you have a lot of space to work with like with the white space around Madoka.

And Smooth simply smooths out the selection in case it's a bit wobbly. I think I used 15 here.

I'm not sure what program you use though, this is how I do it in Photoshop. It is also possible that I'm just over thinking this and the jagged line is not really a big deal.

Mostly magic wand and a little freehand to eliminate circles which abutted the white outline.
I use Corel PhotoPaint and it has tools equivalent to those you mention.
I simply didn't notice the irregularities.

Just a question but could someone tell me what's the best way to increase an image's resolution without reducing the quality? It usually ends up blurry when I try to do it. I'm using PS CS6 in case that's important.

You will always reduce quality if you stretch the resolution, playing around with some Topaz filters helps but it's not really a solution. I wouldn't recommend stretching pictures...

It's usually some images that are like 800-900 pixels high that I want to increase up to 1080. Sometimes it works out fine but that's not always the case.

Well otherwise I can only advise you to use the Bicubic Smoother or Preserve Details scaling up but I have a feeling you did that already.

1600x900 to 1920x1080 doesn't sound like much but it's still an increase from 1440000 to 2073600 pixels which is nearly 50% additional pixels if my math isn't completely wrong now. Photoshop needs to guess those pixels and sometimes it guesses better then other times <3

Tip: when you resample, the interpolation works better if it's by a multiple of 2.
That is, the number of pixels in each dimension increases by a factor of 2, 4, 8, etc.
And do it in one step; multiply by 4 and not by 2 and then 2 more.
