It's actually nice having this wallpapers of OS-Tans, but sadly it's already hitting the 404 faster. How about putting up some wallpapers again ?

I'm not saying the os its self is flawed. That is expected. Show me an OS that is flawless and I will show you a liar. When I called it cluster fuck I'm referring to the way there are hundreds of distros, each trying to perfect some issue the other has, and the total lack of consistency and organization. The community prides its self on being open but then locks its self up over pissing contests and philosophies. Some stuff is done well others not so much. No matter how many supporters Linux gets there are several things that it is lacking and has been for the past 20 years.

>>
>>1689035
In my humble opinion, having tons of different distros to choose from is nice. however I can see how somebody unfamiliar with GNU/Linux would be daunted by the choices.
>>
>>1689834
Maybe if someone is new that would apply, but even when I was new to Linux (fuck GNU, stallman needs to get off his ass and get HURD fully implemented and stop taking credit for Linux) I was never daunted by the choices. I was and am angry with the constant pissing contest created by all the distros. It would be awesome if each distro was made with a specialty in mind, not just a hand full like knoppix or backtrack. Like if say, one distro was made for nothing but graphic design, not just the stuff like ubuntu studio or the fedora spins linked on their sites. I'm talking a distro made from ground up for nothing but running GIMP (using a custom ui skin that makes it look like a professional product) and other photo software.

Instead we get an infinite amount of distros that seem to share the same problems, do 1 thing really well and fail at another 500, or get so bogged down by the developers political / ideological bull shit the development takes a backseat.

Ultimately its the lack of a unified standard that hurts it in my opinion. Gotta be stable, gotta be bleeding edge, muh package management, if you want this install this .deb file or for everything else compile it yourself. They need an equivalent to windows .exe that will work with any distro, UI improvements so you are not stuck picking between KDE's fisherprice look, XFCE's default (until time is put into theming) win2000, and tiling i3 terminal for everything. For linux to take off with normal tech illiterate people the os really needs to be dumbed down from the user side. But this is just my humble rant.
>>
Who here can make a Mech Girl-like android OS-tan?

>>1690551
It's better than arch but it still has the same general issues all Linux flavors have. Give Ubuntu to a tech illiterate person and ask them to install a program. If any part of that process involves the terminal it's too hard.
>>
>>1691320
I am not even interested in them. Discussions don't belong in /w/
>>
>>1691320
Ubuntu software centre for all the scrubs and the terminal for everyone else. If it isn't in the software manager most scrubs can just download a .deb and double click to install.

It's practically idiot proof until someone decides to run "rm -rf /".
>>
>>1691343
The software center is a mess. Unless you know exactly what program you want there is to much crap mixed in with the good programs. The deb files help bridge the gap but not nearly enough programs offer one. God help you if they only have tar.gz files to extract as root. I'm with the other guy, after giving my mom Ubuntu I still say they are not noob friendly.

>>1691330
I'm sorry you feel that way. Some of the best conversations start up on /w/.
>>
>>1691343
>and the terminal for everyone else
I myself use the terminal to install shit that I need every now and then but I also find Synaptic to be extremely useful. If I'm ever unsure of what terminal command to install with Synaptic is a great backup to have. Plus Synaptic is great for checking out what's in your default repositories.
I do agree the Ubuntu software centre is garbage. They even have the balls to mimic Apple by forcing you to pay for certain programs.

In retrospect it really wasn't. It was just the time of its release. As nice as xp was it was clearly tapping out and couldn't keep up with newer tech much longer. Vista was just put out a little too soon and not all the compatibility bugs were worked out. So the thousands of legacy setups out there had trouble but for those that started up with vista it was nice.

Yeah, I'm an experienced Linux user myself, and I would kill to get a .exe equivalent for Linux that isn't tied to a specific package manager. Fuck compiling from source for everything, only the old greybeards and basement-dwelling power users get off on how "superior" compiling from source is. Is has it's advantages, but most of the type, you just need to get shit done and not fuck with shit for hours, trying to get it to work (like drivers for certain NICs...).

That said, I think the only Mint and Puppy are the only two distros I can think of that are more noob-friendly than Ubuntu
>>

I can't tell if this guy is making a sarcastic post, is agreeing with the other person or is disagreeing.
>>
>>1698498
Do you want some crappy.exe on a Linux PC? I don't.
>>
>>1698509
not all .exe files are crappy. If I could give someone a linux desktop and they could install say firefox by clicking on an exe like file rather than using the terminal/package manager or extracting some compressed file then yeah I would love to get that. Its less tech support I have to do because of an overly complicated system.

Hell if I could get most programs that way without relying AUR or comping from source I would love it. Like the other guy said, compiling from source has its place but sometimes I just want to double click and get get shit done. Compiling is for Gentoo, for the average joe its brainless double click and go.

If people are going to rant and rave about how much better Linux is and the fact everyone should use it then make it something everyone should use.

The package manager is here so you can't fuck up your system installing some warez downloaded from shitty sites.

If you are smart enough, and if you aren't install e.g. a full DE, you can install what you want without the package manager, just caring to check dependencies, if existing.

If you want to install everything you want (crapware, malware, and so on, Crome included), just stay with Windows. You don't have to think, just click on a fancy icon.

If you trust only the big software house, stay with Apple or Google, with its Android. You don't have to think, just click on a nice icon.

But if you want to THINK before installing anything, well you can use Linux, BSD, or *nix related.

Last line: everyone that install Crome (and the Cromium derivates) on a Linux PC is a really dumb one.

Regards.

You seem to be under the impression I don't use Linux or that I have no experience with it. I've been using Linux for close to 10 years now, either dual booting or running it on a standalone machine.

I'm fully aware of of the awesomeness that is a package manager. If you know what you are doing with one they are great. I'm talking about for those that have no clue how to use them, they are pain in the ass and a major turn off. The problem is you have to know exactly what to type in. Its no big deal for those of us that know what we are doing. If you don't know its a huge road block. Using your DE example: My mom wants to install xfce, she types in "sudo apt-get install xfce" nothing happens. What she really wants is "sudo apt-get install xfce4". Unless she takes the time to learn this (shes not) its not an issue. If there was an exe for it she wouldn't run into this problem.

I wouldn't expect someone that is clearly this removed from the rest of the world to understand this though. Apparently people are stupid and incapable of thinking if they don't understand on a technical level every topic in the world. I mean its just silly NOT to know everything about anything am I right?

Linux community in general ladies and gentlemen.

go back go /g/. We all know the harm and downsides that exe files come with. For an easy os its a necessary evil. If people are smart enough to use a package manager they are smart enough to avoid dodgy exe files. Going back to the initial source of controversy here, yes a .exe equivalent for linux would be convenient. However we all know it will never happen. There is no reason to flip out over this.

Not in my case, thats what she had. The software center as others have pointed out is a mess and for her its not a matter of wanting to learn. She literally had an anxiety attack just looking at the stuff. Its just too technical looking (even if its really not that technical) for the average person.

...Every single program on a Linux system uses them...DEB & RPM are used by the package manager, too, in order to install packages.

Absolutely NO! It's necessary that people (also) when using a PC start to think, and not to click here and there because it's so funny (and then easy).

>If people are smart enough to use a package manager they are smart enough to avoid dodgy exe files.

Today most of PC users are so dumb that if you unplug the main from the socket they start to scream to the technician saying that their facebook is broken. So, no, people is far away to be smart.

What is going to happen sooner, people think or they double click an icon? Its restarted to expect everyone to know enough about computers and think about every file they click on. When MOST people want some software they just want to double click and get to work. Not look through a list of dependencies or check source code for harmful actions. Besides that avoiding the obvious viruses is easy.

And yet you are missing the point these guys are making.

An OS can be easy for dumb people and still work just fine for "smart" people. An easy OS is not suddenly a place where all thinking stops. Users can make educated choices at any time.

Making an OS only useable for smart people alienates a good amount of a user base. So in the example used here, linux the lack of beginner friendly methods keeps people away. If that is what you want then its working.

The whole start of this shit was someone making a hypothetical "I wish....but it will never happen" statement. Ironically if Linux was dumbed down just a bit more it could really start making a dent in the market.

You do realize some people just want to get stuff done as easily and quickly as possible right? And that these same people also don't want corporations too involved with their computer/files/privacy as well.

Some of us out there want the freedom of linux without all the bullshit.

>Maybe... and maybe that people don't need (or don't want) our skills.
What? People skills are essential no mater what you do. Unless you never leave the house and only interact though a computer.

>>1701963
Hes refering to the privacy thing, or lack there of. All of those companies that offer a service do so on their terms. Terms that aren't what some call fair. Like for example if you have a google account, use gmail, google+, and Google drive; they(google) has access to all your emails, any file you upload to your drive(and they have been known to delete copy protected files so they are looking through it) and through your search habits, and what you post to google+ they pretty much have an outline of who you are. Sure those services help make life easier, but they come at a cost. What some (I myself) would call fucking people up their ass. However there are no major alternatives that are as polished or easy so its a damned if I do damned if I don't situation.

No I don't.
Ideally you would be able to educate people, but the truth is not everyone is technically inclined enough to learn. Not everyone has a desire to learn.
Everyone has a specialty and niche interest. Its crazy to expect everyone to learn everything about every topic they may encounter.

>I think it would be better to teach how to use safeties rather than remove them so people can ‘pull the trigger’ more easily.
You can make an OS safe and easy. A safe OS is pointless if no one knows how to use it. Put out an OS with all the safety precautions set up and there shouldn't be an issue. For those that want to learn and tinker let them turn them off and see what happens, for those that want to be safe keep them on. Its not hard. Making stuff overly complicated just makes learning harder and more time consuming. In other words if its hard most people will not bother.

Both Windows OSes and Mac OSes tries to be as user-friendly possible so everyone can use them.

But just because they use Windows/Mac it doesn't mean they don't want to learn what they are doing, actually, almost everyone "learns" by using Windows.(Until you are trying to learn about UNIX, OF COURSE.)

Ok.
But who, on Earth, will establish that “this is safe and good and that is unsafe and bad”? Nobody is so “pure/unadulterated” to think only for the good of dumb people. Who said its got to be a corporation making the os? Why are the poor people involved now? Obviously anyone making an os will have an agenda. If you really want to learn about UNIX(and most of people don't want to if they are not going to work exclusively on Linux) you can always use Virtual Machines.
