What's wrong with naming the main character after yourself in an RPG?
You can if you want, but I don't like too. I'm stuck with my name in real life, so I might as well do something different since I have the option. Same reason why I generally choose female characters.
When I was a kid I named them all after myself. As an adult, I go for their default names. And if there aren't default names, like with an Elder Scrolls game or the like, I try and pick a lore-appropriate name for them.
I've taken to giving them goofy names. Not usually anything to over the top, like I named the hero of dragon warrior Stinky for example. In FF7 I renamed Cloud to Clod.
It's fun to come up with something stupid. Same goes for making a goofy looking character when there's a character maker. It adds fun but when serious moments happen you're usually used to it enough that it fades into the background. Then on occasion you remember what you're playing as and have a giggle.
Never really use my own name. Maybe I should give it a try.
I love naming the Protag after myself, makes me feel like I'm more part of the adventure. Even more so when I get to name party members after friends I know.
Dwarf Fortress is a fun game where I practically name "Every" dwarf after someone I know, it's perfect to be attached to them~
Same thing for X-Com and other games where you can name everyone.
If it's a game that doesn't have much of a player-character focused plot, I usually name them after myself. Something with my name not appearing often in dialog is okay.
In later, more protagonist focused RPGs though (FF7's a good example), I would much rather just use the default names for everyone unless I'm deliberately fucking around (naming Cloud PenisniggerxD or something).
>everything up to Gen 4 has names in all caps
>play Gen 5
>name myself in all caps
>everyone has lower case names now
I name the main male after myself and the main female after my ex who cheated on me and left me two years ago and hope for a romance subplot between the two so that I can pretend like I'm still happy.
Shouldn't you be busy complaining about normies?
It's not as cool as naming them Indy.
I call all my RPG main characters Indy. It makes everything more dramatic.
"Indy! We have to wake the wind fish!"
"Indy, we have to get to the sector 7 main reactor!"
"Indy, do you know what that means? I am the strongest trainer in the world!"
I usually choose stupid shit and hope that some juvenile humor will result. Sorry for the crappy phone camera pic.
>CURSE YOU, SAGES!
>CURSE YOU, ZELDA!
>CURSE YOU, Link!
When I was 10, I named myself Cloud and others whatever relative of mine reminded most of the characters artwork.
I think Tifa was one of my cousins and Aeris my aunt.
>having older gen Pokémon
Though, on the topic of non-retro Pokémon, I always pick a Fire-type partner when able and name them after a friend who loved Fire-types. I don't think we've talked more than a few time since high school but when the new game came out last year I still did it out of tradition.
>Why would you want to watch a dudes butt all day?
Not all of us ogle over pixelated butts and breasts, Anon.
And not all of us are straight.
I prefer playing as the male hero.
You justifying yourself playing as girl by saying shit like "lol so gay bro you watch the butt" is drivel and I'm tired of seeing it. It's absolute retardation.
>play smt 1 for the first time
>give protag my first/last name
>name the 3 other party members after my friends and significant other
Why did nobody warn me this was a bad idea. I thought we would just be saving the world together.
>imagines Sephiroth and Peridot sharing voice actors
MARTY... only you can take this sacred sword and banish the Dark Lord back from whence he came!
We believe in you MARTY! Take the sacred sword of your ancestors that we searched far and wide for...
Your brother, Lucius, was quite skilled with it before he passed away. MARTY... live up to Lucius' legacy!!!
I used to always use my name, except in Zelda where the obvious choice was "Link".
Nowadays, I do pic related.
I name the MC after myself
Then I name the MC's love interest after a crush or an ex-gf
In Earthbound I just put 4-5 letter swear words as names because I'm immature AF. I named the protagonist Satan. At one point of the game the monkish kid joins the party and says something along the lines of 'I shall give my life to (insert MC's name)'. It was funny.
>mfw when every character is this game has a great fantasy name but my name is rick
>Every character in game even complete strangers know me as Rick
Id argue there's more wrong with people who have to have a cannon name for their characters, like persona fags do.
I named myself Link in every game until I played Megaman X. Then I named myself Zero in every game until I played Suikoden 2. Then I named myself Blight in every game. And now I'm too old to play video games but I do anyway and my name is Blight.
I usually name the character after my online handle if it's a generic protagonist and leave the default name if they're an actual character with a story arc.
Like if you use your own name in Pokemon, Dragon Quest or Earthbound who cares but I wouldn't reset the character name for someone like Terra or Flint.
>just downloaded all three Final Fantasy Legends, Final Fantasy Adventure, Dragon Warrior I&II, Dragon Warrrior III, Dragon Warrior Monsters, and Dragon Warrrior Monsters II for Game Boy
>can't start any of them because none of the characters have canon names and I can't think of anything to name them
I just steal names from other media. I named the characters in FF Legend 1 after Evil Dead characters since the cover reminded me of it, the male protagonist with the chainsaw specifically. My incomplete FFL2 playthrough doesn't have themed names though.
>Tfw Tom always fits, even on those 3 letter high score tables
>can't start any of them because none of the characters have canon names
You're trying to tell me the characters in Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 - COBI's Journey and TARA's Journey have no canon names?
>name my character Like This
>all of the other characters are named LIKE THIS
>name my character in ALL Caps
>all of the other characters are now named Like This
What did it mean by this?
It does the same thing for AAAA and aaaa, but not AAAa
