What went wrong?

Nothing? Some of the best fun I've had in arcade, Gameboy version is also pretty good. Haven't played the sequels though

Jackshit.

It was the inspiration for Zelda.
>>

Tower of Druaga -> Zelda
Dragon Buster -> Zelda 2
Pac-Land -> Super Mario Bros
Baraduke -> Metroid

Nintendo is full of hacks.
>>

Miyamoto cites his childhood boy-adventuring as the major inspiration for Zelda. That said, Druaga was a massive influence on Dragon Slayer and Hydlide, and then Zelda by way of the previous two. Ultima was the other big factor in these games' development.

Druaga itself seems poorly designed to me, with so many of the goals you need to satisfy in order to clear it being hidden in ridiculous ways. It forced arcade regulars to trade notes like it was class homework, rather than being a dungeon crawl you could replay until you figured out as much of it as your skill, observation, and experimenting allowed. I think it was a genius release for Namco in 1984 when arcade competition was getting fiercer, but that doesn't mean it was fun to play on its own merits vs. how it got you (hypothetically) to hang out with friends and figure the damn thing out.

What do you mean "what went wrong"? Strange way to open a thread.

Everyone knows that pac-land / SMB comparison is bullshit.

Even Shakespeare "stole" from other authors.
>>
>>2931185
A lot of LoZ 1, especially the 2nd quest was obtuse as fuck.
>>
>>2931350
Whether you think OG Zelda's obtuse or not, Druaga's obtuseness is different and more unique because it's a maze game first.

Your dad didn't pull out in time.

Nice bait.

Unique means one-of-a-kind by definition, something can't be 'more unique'.

>Druaga was a massive influence on Dragon Slayer and Hydlide
There's only a few months between those. Druaga came out in late July, Dragon Slayer in October and Hydlide in December.
>>
>>2931348
Yep, it's not really about who does it first, it's about who does it best.

Shakespeare isn't remembered because he was original (The Tempest is the only original thing he ever wrote), he's remembered because he wrote those stories better than anyone before him or since.

Obscure ways to get hidden items, and a good chunk of them being Essential.
The fact it was absurdly long didn't help either, in an era where that shit should have kicked you off for winning awhile ago if you got good at it. Gauntlet did it better only a year later.

>>

>>
>>2934572
I know Dragon Buster buy Dragon Valor seems a bit out of my time range.
