Can a knowledgable individual please give an overview of all the different old Japanese computers?

MSX
PC-88
FM-Towns
X68000
Are there any more?

What generations would these fit into (3rd, 4th, 5th)?
MSX vs MSX-2?
PC-88 vs PC-98?
Compare the strengths and weaknesses these systems (video, audio, interface, overall feel and vibe)
What kind of libraries did they each have (fighters, shmups, rpgs)?
How popular was each system (millions sold)?
What are the best games for each system (best emulators)?
Timeline of when they each were released and discontinued (which ones coexisted)?
What kind of crowd did each system attract (students, businessmen, enthusiast)?
Were there system wars like Amiga vs Atari ST (translated flamewar posts)?
What caused them to disappear (replaced by IBM compatibles)?
Is there any kind of retro scene in Japan that reveres these old machines (or is it just a fading memory for old men in pachinko parlors?)?

No doubt a high school informative/narrative essay

Computers are not divided by generations.

>MSX vs MSX-2?
>PC-88 vs PC-98?

...so?

If you don't like it then ignore the thread.

Jesus fuck.

It's pretty obvious you're not required to answer every question to post in the thread, if you just post one answer or really just anything on-topic then that's cool.

Start with this: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/JPNcomputers/Japanesecomputers.htm

Re: system wars, I don't know where to find archives of old Japanese BBS threads, but at a certain point gaming on Japanese PCs was small enough that fanboyism didn't do good for anyone deeply involved. Long-time eroge fans have plenty to enjoy and the old-timers who played '80s games on '80s J-PCs have either left the Web or are on Twitter reminiscing about Hydlide or something. In general console and arcade gaming survived longer following the bubble; it's mainly because of the '80s economic boom that we got a surprising number of cool, worthwhile Japanese PCs and software, all mostly separate from MS-DOS.

What gen would each old Japanese computer system sit alongside if not fit into?

MSX vs MSX-2?
PC-88 vs PC-98?
Were these entirely new computers, upgrades or minor revisions?
What timeframe did they fit into?
How popular were they?
>>
>>2917226
The MSX2 was an upgraded version.
The PC-98 ran parallel to the PC-88 and both got a number of revisions. variants and upgrades. The 98 was a more expensive and better suited for office work.
PC-88 was the the most popular during the Showa era, PC-98 mainly got ports from it back then. In the Heisei era the 88 died off and the 98 took the dominant place.

In a sense the 88 was the Apple II of Japan while the 98 was the IBM PC.
