>>2914592 Played the game so many times, I never picked the right whirl island to get lugia. Some of my fondest memories were exploring those places. That sense of adventure is something I haven't felt in a video game in a long time.
>>2914592 I was like 4 or 5 when I played Blue for the first time. I didn't know what the Run command did and apparentlyI didn't want to find out, so I fought every single random encounter for most of the game.
Granted that's how a lot of people play RPGs, but once I learned you could escape from battle, I started doing it.
My reading skills weren't really developed back then and when once the game was asking me whether my pokemon should learn an attack I answered no and when it asked me whether I was sure, I said no again. I was stuck in that loop for a while and then finally decided to just turn the game off. Luckily I had the habit of saving every two steps. Twice.
>>2914592 Cyndaquil was my favorite starter, and Gold's my favorite game (Crystal makes the timing on the clone trick different stricter IIRC, although it's mostly a better experience). First one I had was Yellow, it was the game that came with my GBC back in '99 or so.
>>2914595 I tried everything. Tapping B as fast as I could, tapping B in time with the shakes, holding it, etc.
I let a friend borrow my copy of Yellow Version as a kid, and a day later he gave it back to me. When I asked him why, he looked up at me real tearful and said "my parents found out I changed the rival's name to Bastard and they're making me give it back."
I didn't even know what bastard meant at that point though, so I was really confused.
>>2914592 >Dumb shit >Saw rival in GS, didn't realize I was getting the opportunity to name him when the police questioned me >Since I didn't know his name, I just put ??? All-in-all, though, I kinda liked the way it turned out. He was just this mysterious dude who wanted to be better than me and was also a shithead.
I thought you only got one crack at the SS Anne and I didn't find the healing person. I was doing ok until a fuck up early on cost me 4 team members, everyone but my charmeleon (FLAPS) and my nidorino (SID). I looked through my pack for items to help buff them up. Said SID could use the moon stone so I used it.
FUCKING NIDOKING MOTHERFUCKERS.
Thrash is a hell of a move. Killed everything on the ship, Gary (RYAN) included, with a little help from FLAPS.
>Dumb shit you did while playing? I chose the moves depending on what I tought would be appropriate for a pokemon, completely ignoring typing, STAB and coverage.. EG: my old Blastoise have Bite, Hydro Pump, Bubblebeam and Skull Bash.
On my first play through I started with Blastoise and only used him in battle. Then I got the the Elite 4 and decided to just restart my game and train my team evenly as I go, rather than grind up the rest of my team.
>>2918156 I prefer to use Pokemon which I have an affinity for, and i've never been much of a fan of the three starter Pokemon. Strategy comes second to being happy with my party. Just a different kind of autism to yours, I guess.
>>2918029 I did some dumb shit with moves as well. I only trained my starter and the rest of my team were HM slaves and fillers to have 6 Pokemon. My Charizard had Cut, Ember, Flamethrower and Slash. As the last attacks the other two starters learn were so powerful I thought Fire Spin was an amazingly powerful move so I had to bring myself to delete Slash for it.
So yeah I had only one strong Pokemon with 3 fire type moves and Cut. Potions and a high level still made it quite easy though.
>be youngass me >restarting new game of pokemon gold >just get chikorita cause fuck yeah >walk into grass > RANDOM ENCOUNTER > fucking golden hoot-hoot > havent got the pokeballs yet > just sit there looking at the screen > leave it on for hours >get depressed > just turn it off
I havent seen a shiny pokemon random encounter since.
>trying to do the Mew Glitch >accidentally run into a wild Pokemon before heading back to Nugget Bridge >"no big deal, I'll just restart. I wonder which Pokemon I'll get instead of Mew, though." >https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSyzAtyBivI
>tfw never had a Gameboy so never experienced Pokemon Never really liked handhelds though, my mom sometimes bought me some of those Chinese Gameboy-like machines with Tetris and some vertical scrolling car game but I never cared for those either. Also in my country there was a craze around potato chips and Pokemon Tazos, that was the shit, we'd trade during the morning breaks and I got the whole collection that way. There were even special holographic Tazos that would show evolution stages when you flickered the Tazo. Good shit.
>>2918053 Same things for me. I watched the show but i must agree that the game was in fact a regression if you compare it to other games of that Time. Just compare it to Zelda link's awakening which is so much prettier and older. Only good thing about pokemon is the world feel really huge.
>>2918131 The computer favoring RNG is apparent as well. For 20 years of playing these fucking games, I always ALWAYS attack myself twice as often when confused, the enemy gets more crits, and just the whole game is so heavily dictated by RNG that at times its literally unplayable.
>>2922069 I remember very clearly defeating Lance for the first time at a hockey rink in Michigan. And then theres (almost) a whole games worth of content left. Some people think Kanto sucks because its so easy, but I see it as a way to use the level 50+ team you have to dominate another region. When I got to Red, Typhloshion was atleast lv 75
>>2914592 I picked Bulbasaur in red/blue. Forgot who in Silver/Gold.
when I was young I had very selective reading. One distinct memory I had was me obtaining the master ball in red/blue and going "This must be useless because it sells for 0 money" so I sold it. Good old kid logic. I somehow had no trouble catching any of the legendary pokemon though.
I never got this fucking dogs, not a single one (at least not in G/S). I ran into them a few times but they always escaped. When I went hunting for them with a Mean Look Pokemon they always managed to be on another route.
>>2914592 Red or yellow. Don't care, but fuck the next gen, there are only 152 pokemon.
Favorite starter? Box1, followed by Nidoran(Male). No one expects the unbridled awesomeness that is rolling with a Nidoran(male) as your primary. A well raised Nidoking beats the ever loving shit out of all the starters and they're easy to get started with at the beginning of the game.
>>2928170 Fuck yeah. I have a battered library copy and everything about it is wonderful.
Best Kanto starter: Bulbasaur Best Johto starter: Totodile
My sister got Red and I got Blue, and since then she's gotten every warm color title and I've gotten every cool color.
My family was getting our new house built around the time we played R/B, so it reminds me of playing it while riding around in the shopping cart at Home Depot, at my grandma's house, and at cousins' ballgames, trying to see in the dark.
Dumping a gen. 2 Japanese --> English book someone posted a while ago, not sure if it's complete since I forgot I had it, or even if it's in the right order.
>>2917992 Nidoking > all starting pokemon final forms. OP as fuck, especially once you stack the moves with TMs. Thrash, Skull Bash, Thunder, Surf (because if you don't have at least 1 HM tech, you're weighing down the team).
Pretty easy to run the entire game with only 1 pokemon.
>>2917557 I did the same thing anon. >didnt realise i was given the opportunity to name him >didn't realise that i wasted my opportunity thought it would be a mystery until the finale >bitterly dissapointed when i realised that i named him wrong after the finale

>>2914592 >Dumb shit you did while playing? Didn't raise my pokemon equally or take advantage of the rock paper scissors meta.
So basically I ended up at the elite 4 with a level 59 Charizard and a bunch of useless pokemon. The next highest was a Snorlax at level 30.
I made it to Blue and got fucked. I started my game over and played properly.
>>2914595 I don't consider that "dumb shit" because Nintendo Power said that holding some button combination increased your chances. It may not work, but that was a tip we got from professionals, not some idiot on the playground or a dubious internet rumor.
>>2935439 >So basically I ended up at the elite 4 with a level 59 Charizard and a bunch of useless pokemon. The next highest was a Snorlax at level 30. I think we all did that. Hell I still do it, starter is in the 80's and the rest half.
>>2914592 >Dumb shit you did while playing? I couldn't beat Brock in Yellow because I had no idea rock was weak to fighting so I traded my Pikachu temporarily with my level 99 Blastoise from Blue to get past him.
The trade glitched out though and I ended up losing Pikachu but having a Blastoise in each game. Ended up playing the whole thing with the piece of shit who refused to obey me.
>Got yellow and a gameboy pocket as a kid >Used nothing but pikachu >Continued this on the same file for years, using just pikachu and training all the other pokemon with exp all to try and 100 everyone without using them in battle >Lost the game one day >Found it a year later outside by our basement entrance storm drain during heavy rainfall >It still fucking worked and had my level 100 pikachu still
Don't ask me to explain, I have no clue how it even got to the main screen.
>>2914690 When you first encounter him he's called "???", so when the cop asks his name later, why wouldn't you tell him what it was? Idk why some people find it hard to believe that so many kids did it for that reason.
>>2918026 >Shitpost Central Hell no. /vp/ is my main board and I can't stand going there right now. The board is god awful with spam and pokephilia threads, during droughts when it takes to long for the next game to be announced. XY/ORAS is old news and there's nothing to talk about except shitpost until the next game
>>2936829 We were kids, it's excusable. Worst part in my case though, is that I continued to play Pokemon in the years to follow, and didn't realize that I didn't have to name him "???" until the remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver in 2010. It just clicked in my mind when playing that part in SS thst I could actually choose the name
>>2936938 This is something I end up doing a lot. Not the sexual attraction to pokemon bit, but not letting pokemon evolve. I thought it was pretty common to keep certain pokemon prevolved if they look cooler that way, but most of the people around my area evolve whenever possible, or most beneficial. Haunter and Weepinbell fo lyfe, yo.
>>2935447 >>2935456 Holy shit, you just gave me a cringe inducing flashback of my first run.
>Pick Bulbasaur because he's the best, can easily beat Brock and Misty >Only level him >Catch mons from first routes until I have 6, never change them >Run away from every single wild battle thereafter >Get to Sabrina >Hadn't even fought Koga >Get Venusaur gets fucking rekt by shitty OP psychic types >"It's okay I still have 5 more pokemon, I can win!" >Steamrolled >Run into my brother's room crying
Fuck man. Goddamn it. I was 5 but still, goddamn I was stupid. Started a new game after that even though it was probably not even a real setback.
Then we got a link cable so me and my brother could trade, took it to school, and when I went to take a piss some kid traded my Wigglytuff for his Mewtwo. Fucking cunts, don't make trades for me while I'm gone.
>>2936965 My nigga. Haunter should have been the final evolve. Fuck the 'you need to trade for >muh final form' bullshit though anyways. Gameboy interactions and the TCG were banned in my elementary school because of like past fights and shit and I basically had noone to interact with. I was stuck with Haunter (nbd, preferable), Kadabra (regrettable), Graveler (regrettable) and is there another?
I lost this years ago, but fuck if I didnt read it back to back over and over again. Brought it with me to day camp all the time to act like the smart kid who knew everything pokemon. Think I even memorized the chart it came with
>>2914592 >tfw waiting for a hack that fixes pokemon distribution >and another that adds HG/SS content and 6th gen gameplay and pokemon Though the latter might be impossible for some reason since the game has some kind of number limit.
>>2935439 >I made it to Blue and got fucked. I started my game over and played properly. I've never understood this because of how broken the balance in the first gen was. About 3 or 4 years ago me and two friends who all really dug Pokemon in our youth decided to take on a random nostalgia challenge and each started our own playthrough at the same time to see who could complete the core game first. The catch was we each had to pick one of each starter between the three of us, and that was the only Pokemon we could use for the entire game. We also could not evolve them, nor could we use any items on them whatsoever, inside or outside of battle, any any non-key items we received in the game we just sold immediately.
We also could not die a single time in the game at all.
I literally breezed through the entirety of the game in a single night with my Charmander. It was fun and nostalgic, but it made me realize how fucking broken Gen 1 really is.
>>2922598 Same. I'm a military brat, and when Gen 1 came out when I was 5 my family was moving around a lot because my dad was active duty and I never really had any friends. I played Pokemon Blue all the time, and absolutely loved it but always wished I had someone to play with.
Then when Gen 2 (I was 7) came out my dad got put on reserves and we moved to a generic suburban area with lots of kids. Pokemon Gold absolutely blew me away. It was everything the original game was and more, I spent so much time playing that game, being so immersed in it that I consider some of them to be within the best moments of my life (and I'm somebody who is pretty productive with life and has had a lot of experiences). Even better though was I had friends to play with. Two neighbor kids down the street played Pokemon and I became best friends with them. We spent unbelievable amounts of time just sitting in his garage playing for hours, and trading, battling, and just talking about Pokemon in general. It was incredible. The cloning glitch also brings back some incredible memories, because I remember charging kids $1 to clone a Pokemon for them because I realized that kids at my school were pretty dumb. I ended up a really nice chunk of money for elementary school kid.
I had a lot of fun with Gen 3, especially with the social elements, and I also really loved Gen 4 because by that point my little brother was very into video games and we played the whole thing together, but those Gen's, still weren't even close to the love and affection I have for Gen 2.
My little brother, despite being 5 years younger than me also considers Gen 2 to be his favorite. He started playing with Leaf Green probably around 2005 when he was 7. He devoured the game and it reminded me of me when I was that age with Pokemon. When he beat Blue, I gave him old copy of Gold and he switched over right away and like me, fell so madly in love with the game. Sadly he didnt get to play socially until Gen 4 though
I've only ever played Red and Blue, when they came out. At the time, 150 fucking pokemon was INSANE. That's a fucking damn lot of pokemon. Then they just keep releasing them again and again with MORE pokemon. WHO THE HELL HAS TIME FOR THIS SHIT? WHY? DO YOU HAVE NO LIFE? God fucking DAMN what's wrong with you motherfuckers?
>playing it for the first time >too impatient to grind, pretty much soloing with Charizard at this point (I taught him Cut too), everyone else is underleveled >friend is watching over my shoulder telling me I'm playing it wrong >how can I be playing it wrong when I'm fucking winning >use slash against a Graveller and OHKO it >it tells me the attack wasn't very effective >turn to firend and ask him why it says that when I totally killed that Graveller
Lorelei rekt my shit, though. I think I ended up restarting because of that.
>>2936046 >only one friend has yellow, the rest of us red/blue >shows us opening cutscene of Pika surfing/flying >says those are secret moves >says he can't use them against us because we have the older games >us 8 year old retard believe him >us 8 year old retards don't think to have him use the moves on a wild poke in his game >believe that the Pika in yellow has secret elecrtic/ flying and electric/water type attacks for years
goddamn. i miss the days of innocence and autism, playing pokes with my friends during recess
