Played the game so many times, I never picked the right whirl island to get lugia. Some of my fondest memories were exploring those places. That sense of adventure is something I haven't felt in a video game in a long time.

I was like 4 or 5 when I played Blue for the first time. I didn't know what the Run command did and apparentlyI didn't want to find out, so I fought every single random encounter for most of the game.

Granted that's how a lot of people play RPGs, but once I learned you could escape from battle, I started doing it.

My reading skills weren't really developed back then and when once the game was asking me whether my pokemon should learn an attack I answered no and when it asked me whether I was sure, I said no again. I was stuck in that loop for a while and then finally decided to just turn the game off.
Luckily I had the habit of saving every two steps. Twice.

I liked 2nd gen a bit more, mostly nostalgia. I really like the colors/art style. Any others like 2nd gen pokemon I should check out?

Cyndaquil was my favorite starter, and Gold's my favorite game (Crystal makes the timing on the clone trick different stricter IIRC, although it's mostly a better experience).

I was doing ok until a fuck up early on cost me 4 team members, everyone but my charmeleon (FLAPS) and my nidorino (SID). I looked through my pack for items to help buff them up. Said SID could use the moon stone so I used it.

FUCKING NIDOKING MOTHERFUCKERS.

Thrash is a hell of a move. Killed everything on the ship, Gary (RYAN) included, with a little help from FLAPS.

I did some dumb shit with moves as well. I only trained my starter and the rest of my team were HM slaves and fillers to have 6 Pokemon. My Charizard had Cut, Ember, Flamethrower and Slash. As the last attacks the other two starters learn were so powerful I thought Fire Spin was an amazingly powerful move so I had to bring myself to delete Slash for it.

So yeah I had only one strong Pokemon with 3 fire type moves and Cut. Potions and a high level still made it quite easy though.

Never really liked handhelds though, my mom sometimes bought me some of those Chinese Gameboy-like machines with Tetris and some vertical scrolling car game but I never cared for those either. Also in my country there was a craze around potato chips and Pokemon Tazos, that was the shit, we'd trade during the morning breaks and I got the whole collection that way. There were even special holographic Tazos that would show evolution stages when you flickered the Tazo. Good shit.

Favorite starter? Box1, followed by Nidoran(Male). No one expects the unbridled awesomeness that is rolling with a Nidoran(male) as your primary. A well raised Nidoking beats the ever loving shit out of all the starters and they're easy to get started with at the beginning of the game.

I still need to play Crystal again, I played only once and for me it's the best game in the series, by far. Like third generation is my least favorite and I played it like 6 or 7 times.

Anyway, beating the first game "again" with all gym leaders in high level in Crystal is one of my favorite experience in videogames.

I thought it was pretty common to keep certain pokemon prevolved if they look cooler that way, but most of the people around my area evolve whenever possible, or most beneficial. I've never understood this because of how broken the balance in the first gen was.
About 3 or 4 years ago me and two friends who all really dug Pokemon in our youth decided to take on a random nostalgia challenge and each started our own playthrough at the same time to see who could complete the core game first.
The catch was we each had to pick one of each starter between the three of us, and that was the only Pokemon we could use for the entire game. We also could not evolve them, nor could we use any items on them whatsoever, inside or outside of battle, any any non-key items we received in the game we just sold immediately.

We also could not die a single time in the game at all.

I literally breezed through the entirety of the game in a single night with my Charmander. It was fun and nostalgic, but it made me realize how fucking broken Gen 1 really is.

I'm a military brat, and when Gen 1 came out when I was 5 my family was moving around a lot because my dad was active duty and I never really had any friends. I played Pokemon Blue all the time, and absolutely loved it but always wished I had someone to play with.

Then when Gen 2 (I was 7) came out my dad got put on reserves and we moved to a generic suburban area with lots of kids. Pokemon Gold absolutely blew me away. It was everything the original game was and more, I spent so much time playing that game, being so immersed in it that I consider some of them to be within the best moments of my life (and I'm somebody who is pretty productive with life and has had a lot of experiences). Even better though was I had friends to play with.
Two neighbor kids down the street played Pokemon and I became best friends with them. We spent unbelievable amounts of time just sitting in his garage playing for hours, and trading, battling, and just talking about Pokemon in general. It was incredible.
The cloning glitch also brings back some incredible memories, because I remember charging kids $1 to clone a Pokemon for them because I realized that kids at my school were pretty dumb. I ended up a really nice chunk of money for elementary school kid.

I had a lot of fun with Gen 3, especially with the social elements, and I also really loved Gen 4 because by that point my little brother was very into video games and we played the whole thing together, but those Gen's, still weren't even close to the love and affection I have for Gen 2.

My little brother, despite being 5 years younger than me also considers Gen 2 to be his favorite.
He started playing with Leaf Green probably around 2005 when he was 7. He devoured the game and it reminded me of me when I was that age with Pokemon. When he beat Blue, I gave him old copy of Gold and he switched over right away and like me, fell so madly in love with the game.
Sadly he didnt get to play socially until Gen 4 though

I've only ever played Red and Blue, when they came out.
At the time, 150 fucking pokemon was INSANE. That's a fucking damn lot of pokemon.
Then they just keep releasing them again and again with MORE pokemon.
