I do not play Fortress for the "stepping it up", it's my best - and favourite - town. It's pretty good.

If I wanted to challenge myself, I'd play Tower and suffer through its shitty heroes and expensive everything. Though I guess I could just turtle until Titans.

I had a pretty good run with Mighty Gorgons on Back For Revenge, for example.

it's a 3 player scenario with variables set in stone

furthermore, one could argue FFA is tougher than vs allies, because on FFA a computer can snowball his heroes' levels and conquer their towns and be much stronger this way

also, play something like Wayfarer or Unleashing the Bloodthirsty if you want some semblance of a challenge :^)
