I never understood the purpose of this thing.

If you just bend back the pins of the 72-pin connector so that it's really snug, you can play games just fine without even needing to push down and click the games into place.
>>

I was wondering about that. I swear my nes games used to work without pushing it down. I didn't know why so many people were jizzing their pants over that mod.

If I remember correctly, it had something to do with a video game crash or something along those lines. Alot of parents got on board with the whole "video games are bad for the children" bandwagon and nintendo thought that if they make it look more like a VCR, parents might be more likely to buy it for their offspring.

Also the reason why it has better sound is because it uses a Yamaha sound chip. Later on Sega replaced it with some shitty IBM sound chip that made the games sound like ass.

Wondermega/X-eye uses the same type of laser as the model 2 Sega CD, the only difference is that the console has all custom pcbs made by JVC.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are more reliable, mostly because they are all in one board instead of the clusterfuck that is the Sega CD.

The PS1 was the pinnacle of retro gaming for me. I played a lot of RPGs, so this was my go-to console.

I also owned an N64, and while it had some very solid first-party titles, there just wasn't a very strong library overall. I did nonetheless like the console's design, and I actually prefer cartridge-based formats over optical ones.

On the subject of redesigns, the SNES 2 was very nice, but has since become an overpriced collector's item. Didn't care much for the redesigned Genesis / MD models. Sega kept removing functionality with each revision. I don't think the Genesis 3 even supported stereo output, and then the Firecore Genesis wasn't original hardware - just some shitty third-party reproduction that renders heavily distorted audio.

The NEC had a fetish for making like dozen of variations of the same hardware. Most of them are kinda pointless though.

The PCE Shuttle is just a CoreGrafx shaped like a spaceship without the CD-ROM expansion port. And the CoreGrafx II is just the original CoreGrafx with the Super CD-ROM2's colors.

The DC isnot really 6th gen, it is some weird intermediate that was released by Sega exactly to quickly get something out before the 6th gen would start. WHich also shows that the sorting of consoles into "gens" has its problems.

I think it holds up well for now (other than the fact I personally don't recognize the first Gen as having all components necessary to be declared legit consoles), but you're right: it was made up after a clear trend had already emerged, it's much more rule-of-thumb than it should be, and eventually the entire schema will have to be greatly refined or more likely retired for good.

Xbox and GC and PS2 have content which all play like modern titles. The only thing they lack is the nowadays forced DLC + netplay + HDDs (not counting the Xbox), but gameplay wise they are at the point where the hardware did not dictate the limits of the content anymore. They also functioned on the multimedia as much as games (except the GC).
>>

>>
>>2908203
Because it has a lot of exclusives and not many own the console.
>>
>>2908181
>It literally still does.

No it doesn't. The only thing that hardware changes nowadays is the graphics quality, and the "size" of the game. But you had Grand Theft Auto on the PS2 as you have on the PS4, and there isn't much core gameplay difference.

Compare that to, say, entire gameplay ideas based around the fact that the SNES could scale. The gameplay was custom tailored to functions that only some piece of hardware could do.

DC was the tipping point in that regard, since it still had a fixed pipeline graphics. Everything after that had hardware T&L and programmable pixel shading.

>isn't much core gameplay difference.

Also, sorry for the shit lighting / setup, should have picked another room / another camera / another time of the day to take these pics. Here's some more info:
- Megadrive 1 HDG (with EXT port), no TMSS
- 32X, vanilla (for now)
- Sega CD 1 fully restored (laser, belt replaced)
- Sega CD BIOS trickery around regions using the Everdrive
- Wireless controllers
- MegaModem
- All-in-one region/frequency switch on the side
- Lazy overclock mod on the back (13.1mhz) with CPU HALT switch
- Everything connected in RGB of course
- Obligatory Tower of Power using Bubsy because why not, it's a huge cart and it's quite a shitty game. Should have done it with Virtua Racing instead I guess.

Mega CD: yes, because essentially all your CD games will be free then (no copy protection at all) and there are great titles on it as well. Favor a MCD2 for lower maintenance / to go cheap.
32X: mixed bag. It has a handful of great games. Get one if you have a Megadrive flashcart, or if you find an unit (and games) for cheap, but don't focus too much on it.

>if Sega could have make a compact redesign of the Saturn years down the road - assuming the console had been relevant still.

I was thinking about that a lot, and if they'd be willing to remove the mpeg cart slot, then they most definitely could make the console much smaller and cheaper.

If they can also make parts of the memory use single chips instead of two half-sized ones, that could also save a lot of space. But it might not be possible for some parts, like the frame buffer.

Those two could make the system 25% less wide for sure. If they rework the CD Drive, maybe integrate it to the motherboard, and use an external 5V DC power supply, then they could also make the console half as tall - but the carts inside the cart slot would stand out a lot like that, which would be an issue.

What I wonder is if they could produce more pieces of the hardware into single ASICs, like combining the VDP1+2 in a single chip, or if that would result in a chip too complex to combine efficiently (not to even mention that one part was made by Hitachi, the other by Yamaha).
