Impossible to get a straight answer because the god tier setup involves some degree of emulation (16 bit and earlier) and some degree of original hardware and/or flashcarts (Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, PS2 (with hard drive)

I cleaned the dust off of mine and sold it. It serves its purpose, but ultimately it's not super great imo. SNES and Genesis have some input delay, and it seems worse on certain games, which is super odd.

I've decided to go Everdrives, which don't work on the R5, so it was less of an option for me

From what I gathered It's not terrible, but the compatibility is a shit and it has quite a few problems. It's good if you wanna save on space I guess, but you can get a wii that does everything the Retron can and more with the exception of playing your games upscaled. If you want games upscaled you can play with emulators on your computer with a controller.

Wouldn't buy though, and the price is cruddy too.

It always simply boils down to poor fags vs people who use it for a niche requirement.

If your too poor to buy it, then go emulate on some $50 tablet or a 10 year old PC with a CRT screen and some ghetto ass adapters for controllers.

Nothing as nostalgic as playing Mario RPG with an Xbox controller.

What exactly are these things? I read that it doesn't actually play the cart, it rips the rom off the cart and emulates it.

What's the point? Why not hook your PC up to your tv? If you already own the physical cart, why wouldn't you actually play the game natively on the hardware it's supposed to be played on?
I mean, if you have the space for dozens of game carts, you should have the space for dozens and dozens of carts yoI should have space for a few systems as well.

The whole concept of owning a physical cart only to put it in a machine that emulates the game is retarded to me.

I really like my Retron, mostly for convenience and the upscaling, but shit could be higher quality. the cart slots always feel really tight (like you have to fight a bit to get your carts out), and i personally have a lot of problems with having to keep reloading carts to have the Retron read them; carts that work great on their native systems. anyone else have these issues?

The Retron 5 has shit emulation. With a top loader NES you aren't emulating at all since it is an actual NES made by Nintendo. If you want to play NES games, that is the way to go since NES2s aren't all bricks with design flaws like the original NES.

This is true to a degree. In a sense, it is still emulation, because, let's face it, it's still happening in 'software' (except this is happening directly at the hardware layer, rather than on a software layer that is running on the hardware). Moreover, this is assuming the implementation is 100% accurate, which it seldom is. That said, the biggest upside of FPGA is you can just update the code remotely to fix any issues that crop up. Can't really do that with ASIC.

Also, you could argue Flashcarts are emulation when mappers are involved.

Only according to some made up definition you believe. According to any reputable source of technical definitions it is. This is why you sometimes see slightly more educated flashfags refer to it as hardware or logic level emulation. The only reason people rage when the term "emulaton" is used is because it's critical that a kid who spent $100 more than the kid next door be confused with the pleb who emulates on his $50 PC

Whatever you want to call it this type of emulation is not a guarantee of accuracy. For example many famiclones are inferior to a good PC based emulator.
