So our phone warriors didn't come through and get us that Doom 4 footage? I've just been skimming the internet for D4 news.

Grab the latest version of GZDoom here:

This is what I recommend you use to run Doom RPG.

I saw some of the DOOM novels in a thrift store yesterday. Anyone read them? Are they entertaining or just plain bad?

Good reads leads me to believe they're awright
>>
>>1798626
I actually had that book and another one, but it seriously has been so long I have no idea if they are any good. I don't think I ever got around to reading the second one though.
>>
>>1798626
even if it's for curiosity get them, if they are cheap enough that is.
>>
>>1798619

I can run Doom RPG, but the RL Monsters won't load with it. Will the dev build work?
>>
>>1798626
The first one is generally the best Doom adaptation you could hope for. The second one starts to go off the rails and by books 3 & 4 it's full retard

The demons are alien shapeshifters or some shit that only take the form of what humanity perceives as demons, and they're controlled by another alien race called the Freds
>>
>>1798634
You'd have to give me your log for me to tell you exactly what the problem is. But generally both of our mods use the latest features that only the devbuilds have, so you should definitely be using them.
>>
>>1798639
They're controlled by a shitty YouTube personality?
>>
>>1798650
Dunno about him, but what I've seen about Doom 4 isn't the information I really wanted to hear.

Okay, great, it's bloody and has no regenerating health. But this is not what made Doom (or any other) FPS good. I mean it sounds better now that we have a little bit on it, but there's been way too much focus on gore. It's not like MK1 where the only real selling point was gore. There was a competent game under all that demon shooting. If there wasn't, something like Chex Quest would suck ass.
>>
>>1798634
>>1798641

I got it to work with the latest dev build of GZDoom. I've been using the latest ZDoom for just the Arsenal and Monsters, but it doesn't work with Doom RPG

Now I have to go through and change all my settings again. Is there a way to load this all into ZDL? I have a .zdl loadout for Brutal, MSX, RL Arsenal, and I'd like to get one for this too if that's possible.
>>
>>1798664
>It's not like MK1 where the only real selling point was gore.
I hate when people say this. I think MK1 is actually more fun than MK2 or UMK3.

>Many observers have contemplated the presence of nipples on a topless man. A man's nipples do not lactate, and they are not sexually arousing. As I rub my own nipples, I feel nothing except a vague ticklishness, and a sense of unease; what if someone were to witness me rubbing my nipples? What would they think of me, to see me, sitting here, writing about topless men, whilst rubbing my nipples? I damn these people, these imaginary observers, for forcing me to moderate my behaviour. If I want to rub my nipples, I should be allowed to do so without fear of mockery or assault.

Okay so apparently you CAN use ZDL to load folders.

You need to drag them from your file browser to ZDL in order for it to work.

I don't actually use ZDL myself though, I wrote my own launcher for handling all of this. I'm just going by what people quickly told me in TS.
>>
>>1798668
>I think MK1 is actually more fun than MK2 or UMK3.

Really?

Because I feel that MK2 was what MK1 should have been in regards to polish and design. And MK3 (technically MKT) is my favorite game in the entire series.
>>
>>1797659
Precisely what I was thinking.

Then we'd have a literal titty monster.

>>1798687
Yeah, I wasn't too thrilled about hearing that. Someone said they were pretty fast so they didn't disrupt the flow too much. I still have my doubts.
>>

>Someone said they were pretty fast so they didn't disrupt the flow too much.

That's good.

You know what game was super fucking bloody and still really good? Blood. Shit, I may have to reinstall.
>>
>>1798626
Knee deep in the dead was a good read. Quite accurate to the game.
>>
>>1798703
I think it may be similar to BFE. In that game, you had unarmed melee attacks that teleported you to your target from a fair range, and instantly killed the enemy in less than a second. That's what I'm expecting.

Of course, being able to instantly kill demons in Doom-style encounters would be overpowered, but I understand that it can only be used against wounded enemies.
>>
>>1798668
I'm curious why you say that. MK2 is definitely my favorite in terms of feeling and design, but MK1 is just...well, it's the first game. It's like Street Fighter 1.

>My name's Ashley Mark Pomeroy and I'm a chap. I'm British, and I'm over thirty years old. As a consequence I feel slightly dirty when I use a Wiki like this, because so many of you are fourteen-year-old boys and it's not right for a thirty-year-old man to hang out with fourteen-year-old boys.

>From 1999 to the end of 2001 I worked as a freelance writer for Future Publishing in Bath, England, on some of their least successful computer gaming titles. I also wrote two books and spent 2000-2002 working full-time as a copywriter for Loot.com in London. Since then I've moved back to my home town of Salisbury, in Wiltshire, where the living is easy and the cotton is high.

>Not a particularly impressive career, but it means that I have nothing to prove to anyone on this wiki! If you have a problem with my edits, you are probably wrong. You are fourteen and you are not emotionally mature. You might be very bright but you're still just a kid. I would describe my feelings for you as a mixture of arrogant contempt and downright hatred; I can hide it, but it makes me angry to do so because I am no longer my own master.

I've been experimenting with monster behavior as of late, trying to make things a bit on the projectile slow-but-spammy side so as to encourage the player to rely on the sword to deflect/block fire and to emphasize bullet hell to dodge and weave through.

I love red demon ass, but face it, that's a terrible TERRIBLE graphic, it's made of screenshots of a terribly dated 90's model.

How are hexen, heretic and strife?
>>
>>1799385

Hexen : Key hunting and switch puzzles will drive you crazy, but it has good atmosphere and fun combat. Only check out if you really like the puzzliest doom levels.

Heretic : MedFan doom. Good stuff all around and some interesting level design. I love it even if the weapons are on the meh side.

Strife : Great ideas but some very wonky gameplay and balance. Still more than worth a playthrough though.
>>
>>1798327
https://archive.foolz.us/vr/thread/1703227/#1704904
>>
>>1799385
Heretic's pretty good. It's basically Fantasy Doom, without hitscanners and with an inventory system. General gameplay is slower than Doom - enemies hit softer and so do you. It's fun, though.

Hexen is interesting. It has very little in common with Doom beyond the engine. The level design and puzzles can be irritating, unless you've got a thing for key and switch hunting, in which case you'll love it. The gameplay is a mixed bag, but it gets better over the course of the game. You go from using seriously pathetic weapons against enemies that either barely fight back or are extremely annoying, to smiting enemies with lightning bolts and shooting ghosts out of a big cross to rip apart vast swathes of assholes.

Strife is awesome. An FPS-RPG hybrid with good voice acting for all major characters, most minor characters, and even some people that are totally irrelevant to the plot. The gameplay is pretty good, but not quite comparable to Doom. Enemy balance is all over the place, and there's not really any mid-tier weapons - you go straight from wimpy peashooters to weapons of mass destruction. Still, it's really good and you should definitely play it.

Recently played through both for the first time in years and ultimate doom levels just feel perfect. Doom 2's more open and non-linear levels just feel weird

Jesus christ, Doom 2 is so much fucking harder than the first, it's insane. You'd think the SSG would be enough to carry you through hell, but it always feels like you have such limited ammo with it with how these maps stretch you like a Jew.

maps are much larger than DooM, and have more monster variety. At later levels you have to find the "most comfort route". For example, in map15 I'd never go looking for the yellow key until I got the invulnerability sphere from a secret passage

I was talking about physical features.

Robotjoe's demon girls are much more monstrous and it's pretty nice while Mystical(I think that's the name of the artist) has a more human look for the demons and that's fine too

I would not mind more monstrous demon girls but I am also fine with what HDoom is currently going for.

Dark servant.
Except not OP, insanely rare or time based. Wrath of Cronos does this nicely with the dark flechette's archer minion.

One-use powered spells/sub-weapons would be nice too. I would rather pick up a triple hatchet consumable than a tiny mana refil.

Portable version of heretic's floating sponge bomb thingy.

Potion of confusion. Only affects zombies/imps/lost souls and makes them target random demons for a few seconds.

Mystery grenade. 85% chance of exploding like a barrel, 10% chance of scattering small health/armor pickups and doing no harm, 5% chance of spawning agitating skeletons.

Guys, this just in.

Id Software just tweeted that Doom 4 was inspired, not by Brutal Doom, but by the Doom Comic

https://twitter.com/idSoftware/status/492359373063471104

Incidentally, they had just immediately jumped on the Brutal Doom v20 release yesterday.

If all you want to do is create levels, you won't need SLADE. However, you should still get it and learn to use it a little, because IMO, every map should include a new (or at least different) sky and new music.

At a dead end in my map. It's at the end of an optional area that needs 2 keys to access. What's the "reward?" I have no idea what to make the room look like, either.

At this point the player can get everything up to the rocket launcher through regular means or very easy-to-find secrets, including the SSG.

>>
>>1800348
I think it's a moot point, considering the Pain Elemental doesn't have an identifiable torso.

Don't make the optional area too large or take too much work to get into. There is a point where no reward is truly worth all the effort, and you're just doing it for the sake of completion. I can't tell if you've done any such thing, considering you haven't told us much about it other than it requires two keys to access.

It doesn't. You need the two keys to exit the level; the third key is in the area directly preceeding this one and doesn't require a key to access, so you can conceivably enter this part first, only to realize you need the other key to get into this part.
>>
>>1800389
There's no standard on how many liberties you're "allowed" to take when feminizing the demons. It's all a matter of opinion.

Personally, I think it's all fair game as long as you adhere to the art style and the character retains the defining traits of the original creature.
>>
If we're talking about hdoom, I think it's an admirable project, but it's suffering from anime genericity, anime sameface, and de-monsterization and de-mystification of the monsters.

you play doom in the nineties. 18 years later you read about this "brutal doom" thing in the mainstream press. you download it, you completely fail to notice this other thing called "gzdoom" because it means nothing to you. all that permeates your consciousness is the memory of doom in the nineties and this brutal doom thing you're playing now. so you think everything "new" was invented by brutal doom. you don't understand the difference between engines, iwads, pwads, mods, etc.

it's a natural conclusion for people who haven't followed the development of doom since mid nineties, and who have only read mainstream press, who elide details that we who *have* followed doom development for 20 years care deeply about but outsiders don't.

all you can do is hope to educate these folk; some will be interested, and read up for themselves, and may become valued members of the community. others react like Total Buiscuit and say "fuck off sperg". you just have to shrug and ignore those types. they will go away on their own when the next shiny thing comes along to distract them.

Because Doom's design is based entirely around the player having a consistent source of DPS to defend themselves with and reloading breaks that up.
It's not just Brutal Doom that gets this reaction, any mod with reloading will have this complaint because reloading inherently slows the rate of fire down.

That being said, sometimes reloading is cool. It adds to the immersion and provides more visual feedback for your weapon.

>Because Doom's design is based entirely around the player having a consistent source of DPS to defend themselves with and reloading breaks that up.
Well, it kinda does, but I personally just don't mind that, I think it adds a bit to the excitement, to have to choose your weapon for your encounter, and having to take cover or dodge around a corner to swap mags, then run out into the fray, dancing and dodging fireballs and bullets.
But, personal taste I guess (and the kind of mapset you're playing would have a significant effect on this I guess)

>It's not just Brutal Doom that gets this reaction, any mod with reloading will have this complaint because reloading inherently slows the rate of fire down.
I personally think it can give a weapon character if done right, it can make a rifle feel more like an actual rifle than just a reskin of the Chaingun (ironsights on a rifle kind of makes sense for this purpose, but I feel that they're not nearly as necessary for a shotgun or handgun in a fast-paced game)
That said, I like it when reloads are fast and efficient, like in Accessories To Murder or like the Duke Nukem 3D pistol, Doomguy is a pro, and shouldn't be fiddling with the magazine or take his time to soak in the beauty of his gun, he should be fast and skilled, humanity is at stake.

Something I liked about the Doom 3 shotgun was that the marine would insert two shells at a time when reloading it (that said, the shotgun wasn't sawed off or anything, yet still spread like a 3 inch pipegun loaded with birdshot, but my point is, the reloading of that weapon was done right). This kind of shotgun reloading I've never really seen implemented for old Doom. Some version of Brutal Doom tried to solve the slow reload of the shotgun by just having the player load each individual shell really fast, but it just looks really goofy.

Didn't really mean to stir anything up with my question, it's just something I had observed and was wondering for a while.

Honestly if you're looking to revamp the room, I would redo it so the player doesn't "start" from a door that they will later enter. It's weird because then it's like, where does the player "come" from? Where was he before this level started? Was he in the library?

An open ceiling where you can see the sky can do wonders for the level, since it'll also give you some built-in sectors that you can light well for lighting variation.

IMO there's a huge blank space before the library in that room that's gonna NEED some detailing and architecture to bring it out of just being, well, a big fucking blank space. Since it's a library, you could put, I dunno, some desks and/or tables and shit.

>>

Well if you were going to do that, you'd have to be able to play as any of the three Eds, (and possibly other characters) which would imply some sort of class system.
Which sounds complicated.

Does anyone remember the EEnE visual novel /co/ was working on that ended up dying on the vine?
Because I was thinking it would work something like that -- the player character is a faceless protagonist, the "new kid" in the cul-de-sac, interacting with the previously established characters.
And then it becomes a Dawn of the Eds-esque imagination fueled romp through the various locations in the neighborhood.

If I did it again I would probably spawn each of the keys when you went into each room so you it would follow the happening meter correctly, but basically have each open up a tier of rooms which you could go through in whatever order you wanted, and secrets would require you to do things in multiple rooms. I'm kinda doing something like that in a map I'm working on off and on now (though no happening meter.)

Hideous Destructor is MADE to be that slow though.

>In Brutal Doom, Doomguy takes half second to reload the rifle.
>Not even the most skilled Spetznaz soldier can do this
Say that the rifle is some kind of AR-15 variant, or just generally based on the Stoner design, the bolt locks back after the last round is fired, if he presses the magazine release with his trigger finger, and at the same time reaches for a new magazine to put in the magwell, inserts it, and then hits the bolt-release to chamber a round, a real skilled operator, who has trained to do this a lot, as efficiently as possible, could probably do this in one and a half second, maybe even one second:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S09rCeFkzu0

Hell, if there's a round in the chamber already, he wouldn't even need to hit the bolt-release.

>He can insert 8 shells inside a shotgun in 2 seconds.
I already described this as goofy looking, and could probably look a hell of a lot better if the animation was slowed down but he inserted 2 shells at a time, giving the same reload time, but better looking.

The main part of my post wasn't directed at Brutal Doom specifically, I just always thought the way the player puts in one shell at a time at that speed is really silly looking.

It does work though. Both are completely viable methods for multiplayer, just in different ways. In ZDoom's case, setting up is more involved and you are far more likely to run into problems, possibly, for a setup that works fine without too many issues, compared to Zandronum. ZDoom is a bit like.. setting up a LAN party with your friends where Zandronum is more like just a quick ol' friendly thing you can join in and any time without too much fuss or muss.
Sorry if that didn't answer anything though.

Far as I know, not sure if it was fixed or not, there is an issue with ZDoom where if it takes too long for players to join in, the 'handshake' process just stops trying. That and it usually takes coordination with other people, and it can be bit of a hassle if there isn't proper port forwarding going on and etc. Bit of a mess, really.

I'm actually not that familiar with DMC (the only one I played is 4), but some of the early pre-alpha testers say it's similar.
I wouldn't mind going with some extra melee weapons. Already gonna be including the hammer as the chainsaw slot, just need to figure out the BFG and/or Berserk.

You could replace Berserk or BFG with gauntlets.
Ifrit in DMC were a pair of Fire gauntlets built around power hits that you could charge for punches and it was really satisfying to use. It had some cool moves to work with too.
I wouldn't mind seeing a punch weapon in general.

Also I am worried my post kinda came out negative when I said it's DMC.
I didn't mean to for it to sound negative and I'm sorry if it came out that way.

if you want to make any significant alterations to the palette you also have to redistribute recoloured versions of most of the contents of the IWAD (e.g. btsx, stardate)

other than that it always seems like a change made for change's sake and not any particularly good reason.

also tangentially if you are interested in changing the engine to use truecolor, doom's (and especially boom's) reliance on palette index mapping for most of its color effects (dynamic colormap, translucency maps) is extremely irritating.
>>
>>1802318

I made one a while ago that I use whenever possible... I'd link it, but loltablet. Last I saw spritenoobsaibot was using it.

It changes the reds to be more subdued, makes the blues similar to back to Saturn x, and graduates the greys so they turn a little yellow when they're brighter and bluer when they're darker... Similarly, with the greens they get more lime green when brighter and leaf green when darker... A picture would be a lot more descriptive, but thems the breaks.

Just finished Ultimate Doom for my first time. That last episode was fucking ridiculous compared to the ones before it, it seemed to demand perfect understanding of the game mechanics.

I appreciate that.

I'm scared to move on to Doom 2 for my first time, though. Please tell me it has a normal difficult scale, instead of being more difficult than Ultimate Doom's final episode. I don't think I can handle anything harder than that.

What am I in for, /vr/?

I'm using Brutal Doom BTW (yeah I like torture porn, please don't crucify me).

>>
>>1802939

>using Brutal Doom

Doom 2 has a lot more sprawling and open levels, as well as a batch of gimmick levels. It's generally considered much weaker than Doom 1, and quality seesaws up and down extremely hard, with nobody really able to determine a consensus as to specifically where.
Once you hit the city levels around 10 or 12, you may want to skip about ten levels ahead. Don't feel shame if you want to skip through it, a lot of the strength of Doom 2 doesn't come in its levelsets but rather its more varied bestiary and mod support.

So we decided to try out ZDoom netplay earlier today.
>>
>>1802959

I beat it on Hurt Me Plenty.

I should clarify that I beat Doom 1 Episode 1 (shareware) many times as a child and grew to love FPS games, but my parents wouldn't ever let me actually buy Doom when I was young enough to still be excited to play it.

After Doom 4 was being compared to Brutal Doom, I remembered that my memories of Doom were confined to the Shareware version and I figured I should beat the whole series before Doom 4 comes out for nostalgia's sake. Naturally, I wanted to try out the Brutal Doom Mod which I fucking love. I know Sgt. Mark 4 is supposedly a huge fucking dick, but I really don't give a shit. He made a cool mod, don't be a fucking butthurt nerd just 'cuz he said some stupid shit. What are you, a tumblr feminist?

Anyway, the last episode of Brutal Doom felt like Super Meat Boy in level of difficulty. No way I would have done it as a child, but as an adult with lots of gaming experience, it was nothing more than a test of stamina. I recommend everyone on this thread try Thy Flesh Consumed again right now, it'll make you all better people. Mods or no mods, doesn't matter. Play that shit, niggers.
