While we wait for the arrival of "Garage", we can continue to discuss and share obscure and rare games. A long time ago thanks to / vr / I've found "The Book of Watermarks" for ps1 downloading the iso from a torrent almost dead. Today I decided to put it on my mediafire account for all of you

Zero 4 Champ series (PC Engine). It's a drag racing game, kinda similar to the old Hot Rod on PC, you can custom your car and the game also offers a small storyline and some minigames. All the games are in japanese, but the first game is mostly in hiragana, so if you can deal with that you can play the game.

The second game is much more expansive and it has you travelling all over the US, it features even more minigames and more cars, this one isn't that straight forward as the first one, so it requires some reading comprehension in order to play.
>>
>>1434726
Yeah it's a pretty neat Myst clone albeit short. No Japanese required either since it's English audio.

Mistmare is a roleplaying game from 2003 which, on it's release, suffered from several crippling bugs and terrible camera controls.
Most of this was fixed by patches but the damage had already been done.

After several very negative reviews (3/10 by IGN, for example) it was already forgotten by the time it had become playable.

The game however isn't actually that bad.
It's just very mediocre compared to other similar games like The Summoner, Neverwinter Nights or Vampire Redemption.

Still, the world is interesting enough to at least give it a try,
if you can find a copy, that is.

This was a game that I got as a gift when I was a lot younger, and ever since then I haven't heard a thing about it.
I don't remember much about it, other than it being a point-and-click adventure game in the same vein of Myst, but I remember it being extremely interesting.

It was slightly edutainment, though in the sense that it made simple science into full-blown puzzles, and I remember it working decently enough, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere since.

Nemesis: The Wizardry Adventure

I tried to find a decent download for this particular adventure game which supposedly consists of 5 CDs. Some idiots though it would be great to make a seperate torrent for every CD-ROM there is. If somebody has a decent download link, it would be great. it's pretty much the only Wizardry game I haven't played yet and I think it's rare these days too since I don't know where to find it.

The only download I found for this is so slow that it would take two weeks to download this game and I'm not even sure how save the site is.

speaking of adventure games in general.

Did anybody on /vr/ ever played Master of Dimensions? I did as a teen and I would like to run it again but I couldn't do so via dosbox. It was published by Eidos Interactive as far as I recall and is quite interesting because it focuses, as the name says, on dimension travel so you have different and varied settings. I bet this game is hard to find but I'm not exactly sure about it. Downloads are avaible though. Getting it to run on a modern OS is the bigger issue.

http://www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting/comments/pr1tl/fotw_found_master_of_dimensions_a_rare_pc_big_box/

there was also a thread about a guy finding this game somewhere and bought it for fucking 200 bucks on ebay which might be way too much for it.

More than rare, this would be something people doesnt know about a specific game. Imperial Prince on PC-FX was made by the same people that made Sorcerian, Kaze no Densetsu Xanadu and other Falcom games up to 1993. And it has lot's of gameplay elements from those games.
>>
>>1435745

pardon me, I didn't read correctly, it was not him since he bought it for 3 dollars at the thrift store.
>>

You aren't trying to enter on the invitation of an idiot are you?
Don't enter on an invitation from an idiot. Get your invitation from a different personality. The personalities are the different seahorses, sipping tea, wearing a buffalo, etc.. Apparently they're all idiots except Butts the "where did I put my cigarettes" guy

Also the "demo over" screen I put in the screen shots was what I got right after passing the face and getting the explanation about the book. When I tried again I didn't get the demo over screen but was taken outside to a cone that lead to a tunnel and bridge that looked like DNA molecules. There's more to the demo than I was originally able to reach.

Most of these aren't strange or special, they're just bad games masquerading as something more than what they actually are. They're z-movies of video games.

>>
>>1436787
Well, OP only asked for Rare/Obscure games. I mean, chances are the reason a game is rare is either because a.) the game sold so well that it's hard to find physical copies of today (which cancels out the obscure category) or b.) the game sold so poorly that it was not very mass-produced. That being said, a good 90% of obscure/rare games out there are going to be bland, dull or uninteresting. Of course, that's really based off opinion more than anything. One man's Myst rip-off can be another man's holy grail of obscure gaming.

>strange or special

"rare and obscure" doesn't necessarily imply that. Learn to read. I think your comment is pretty insulting to everybody who posted something. it's rare if you can't find it anywhere or in very few places and it's obscure because nobody knows much about it, barely ever talks about it or is just nothing more than a cover for most people with a completely unknown game behind it.

An irritating mother, a hypocritical girlfriend, a sadistic brother in law, brutal guards, a cop for a father in law: here are some of the people who live in the village of Crison. You really want to kick their asses, even your girlfriend's, Isabelle, but you have to save the village from More, who rules the place with his fisgusting thugs.
You can be both George, who is blind, or his younger brother Raymond, a little brat. If you are smart enough, you will use Raymond's qualities and subvert the village against More.

Just because a game is bad, or bad by todays standards, or bad by your standards doesn't mean it's not strange or special. It also doesn't mean it's not worth saving. For me that's mostly what this is all about. I might not enjoy every game here but I like preserving for other who might.

But, some IRL backstory:

Thirteen years ago Horse was 23, the author of two books, on his way to being named Scotland's author of the year - and in desperate need of money. Getting published (and paid) would have taken too long. His solution: create an ancient-looking, lavishly illustrated, "lost" manuscript about the days after the destruction of Atlantis, then attempt to convince an antiquarian book dealer it was genuine. It worked beyond his expectations: Christie's appraised it at $20,000 and the dealer approached a publisher.

"He thought he'd found the next H.G. Wells or Jules Verne," Horse says. "The book not only had accounts of secret ancient societies but also had startlingly accurate references to World Wars I, II and III, plus nuclear fission and the equation for relativity." But the hoax soon unraveled. By chance the dealer went to Horse's publisher, who immediately recognized his illustration style. Horne talked his way out of jail and promised never to publish the material in the book.

That would have been the end of the story, had Horse not seen two breakthrough CD-ROMs - Myst and 7th Guest - 10 years later, in 1993. "I thought, 'I can do that.' They combined my interest in puzzles and cryptograms with my illustration, writing, and story-telling skills." Horse chose to break his promise. "It wasn't worth the paper it was written on," he says. "I was only 23 then and quite frightened about going to jail."

Horse and Algy Williams, who has a background in TV production, have assembled an eclectic team: another illustrator, a sculptor, a designer of "fiendishly difficult" puzzles featured in the London Times, a graphics and programming team from Epic Multimedia, and two musicians who go by the name of Miasma. "The graphics are photo-realistic and the audio and sound effects are stunning," says Williams.

I'll be uploading this in 4 parts: The 3 Isos, and some extras (a patch needed to play, the scanned manual, box art, etc)

https://www.mediafire.com/?adfb1pb2rlxytdd

Some game backstory:

The Bible and Darwin were both wrong.

That is the premise of Drowned God, a point-and-click, hi-res graphic adventure that will rattle a few cages and get plenty of ink. "It's obviously a contentious subject," says the game's producer, Algy Williams. "If we piss off a few zealots, so much the better."

The game purports that many thousands of years ago an alien race from Orion not only genetically engineered humans but also guided their social and scientific development. Then along came the great flood, erasing much of that work and concealing the world's greatest artifacts: the Rod of Osiris (the Egyptian god of the dead), the Holy Grail, the Philosopher's Stone, and the Ark of the Covenant.

Your challenge is to visit the four earthly and spiritual realms in which these items can be found, unlock a labyrinth of puzzles, and complete several tasks to gather them one by one. Sound like your basic treasure hunt? It's not - far from it.

"We are aiming for a totally immersive experience, a quest for knowledge," says Williams. "Basically you are uncovering a huge government and church conspiracy that has seriously altered human history."

Conspiracy theorists and other denizens of the alt.alien.conspiracy newsgroup will recognize many of the ideas presented in Drowned God: the Philadelphia Experiment, the Roswell alien autopsy, the alien race known as the "Greys," and pyramids on Mars. The game also disputes public perceptions about the Kennedy assassination, Leonardo da Vinci's inventions, and how Einstein formulated the theory of relativity.

hg101 just put a new article on the tong nou games. and they gave us a shoutout
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/chuteng/chuteng.htm

>Well, that's what fans thought before some guys from 4chan's /vr/ board - who can do great stuff when they don't spend their time insulting each other - decided they would put their hand on this game, whatever the costs. After having turned the Internet upside down, experiencing a frustrating refusal to rip the game from the only Japanese collector known to own it and getting the word from Sato himself that the game was so damn rare that even he didn't have a copy, it seemed like a lost cause. And it would have been, if not for a sudden and unbelievable stroke of luck. As the gang of anons was scrutinizing every corner of the Internet, some guy came out of nowhere claiming a copy of the game was lying around somewhere in his attic. Very few people were convinced that this was the truth. Yet, what seemed like a tease proved to be entirely true. So, that is the story of how Chu-Teng was brought back to civilization - technically, by a random guy who happened to be browsing 4chan at the right time. So, now this game is finally available to mankind, what is there to say of it?

This part is pretty accurate, I guess. Though /vr/ is a bit friendlier than usual.

I wonder if the Chu-Teng translation is ever coming out.

Moon Cradle, it's a sci-fi FMV adventure game released originally on 3DO, and it was later ported to Sega Saturn.

The main character is a detective and he has to investigate the dissapearence of a woman. Unlike most japanese adventure games, Moon Cradle uses isometric camera with 2D graphics and FMV for the actions. It has a pretty nasty mechanic, since the ending you'll get has a relation with a score meter that you can't see until the end of the game. Still, it's a pretty short game.

Man, PlayStation in Japan was a much different console.

I feel like there are so many of these weird-as-fuck games for JP PS that we didn't even get CLOSE to getting here in the states.

I've always been an obscure Saturn collector, maybe I should start looking more into PS.

I saw a game called Monster Racers for DS and was intrigued by it, and found out the game had several Japan-only iterations.
The DS game is similar to Pokemon but instead of fight, you race in a 2D platformer "hold right to win" style.
The older games look less interactive and the monsters look more simplistic, but still sort of interesting.
GB - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWagBx8xq-w (you can see how little they tried to make the tiles different from Pokemon)
PSX - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zZxv10pc9k
DS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN1hVgLZlxk (they edited Pokemon music over the audio)

repackaged in an amazon box, labelled a movie, in a oversized box with deviating declaration form to avoid zealous australian customs.

I mean it should be fine without the effort but im not putting a 810 USD game in any risk to a government furnace because of boobs in a game.

Can expect soon, baught some VHS tapes which should get there by the end of the week, until then woop.

not doing anything illegal or alarmed to say any of that, declarations are normally scrutinised for businesses and so. I didnt know about this FMV, I couldn't find too mcuh about this could you telll me a little more about this technic?
>>
>>1449269
full motion video, a lot of games did it cheaply by having the video files split into low quality, high compression JPEG images, usually with a 22khz sound file accompanying it. The frame rates were low, the quality was poor, and the codecs even poorer. But full motion video in a game was exciting at the time and some developers really took advantages of the possibilities. Looking Glass Studios for example, flourished in it with their magnum opus, Thief the Dark Project.

Others' efforts ranged from abstract, experimental, faithful, corny, silly, and generally fun.

Some creepy, intentionally at times, not always however.
>>
>>1439050
This game is definitely worth checking out - BUT some of the puzzles are so arbitrary that you need to have a guide to get anywhere.

I haven't finished it, though. There's a part where you have to race this one creature, but it's stupid hard and you have to wait 5 minutes or so before being able to try the race again.

WELL totally distracted from garage, but is there interest in a fan mod of LSD? I figured making it english autistic is far too consuming and voids it of its style.

I might upload the textures to a weebly site, and take in suggestions for fan textures and pick the best?
