Let's have a thread for trying to identify the origins of certain terms in gaming.

This old ass (unreleased) arcade game uses the term "free man" all the way back in 1982. Are there any records of 1ups/extra lives being referred to this way earlier than that?

Which JRPG has the most interesting battle system?

None. Now, if we are talking about tactics jrpgs ...
>>
>>4178994
I think the Grandia and Romancing Saga games are two good examples of retro JRPGs with well done, engaging battle systems. A milder example is Super Mario RPG and Breath of Fire 4.

Beyond that, I can't think of many others.

Not really.
If you watch the video all the consoles are connected, he does a good job of hiding the cords.

Most /vr/ users have the garage setups, so they are triggered by this picture.

The only thing that gets me is this cat is not using a CRT. But again watch the video he's got one, just not in that frame.

Everything has some flaw if you look hard enough. This is just a barely veiled CRT flamebait though.

>N64/Dreamcast/PS2 emulation is perfect!

What this really means is that the 3-5 highest profile games have the best compatibility with their respective emulator while everything else suffers in one way or another. I'd add Saturn to this but it just barely scrapes by.

I've never heard anyone say that
>>
>>4178102
>the dreamcast is the best game console ever!
historical revisionism. it's okay to look back and feel bad for sega despite every fucking person in the universe giving them total shit at the time
>input lag isn't real guise emulators are perfect!
wrong. this meme always has and always be perpetuated by people who use emulators. anyone who has used a real CRT knows that it's real
>the ps1 is the best game console ever!
wrong, and this is mostly due to nostalgia. a lot of people appreciate it for the RPGs and if you fall into that category than I understand your opinion though I don't share it.
>games don't age
they physically don't age, but as time passes the art of game making becomes more and more refined making returning to old games more challenging
>discs would have saved the n64!
maybe sales wise but the ps1 didn't win because of CDs alone, they won because of sony's amazing third party program. not to mention that it would have tacked on (by nintendo's own estimates) $100 to the price making it unprofitable. Things like this are why nintendo is historically richer than sony despite being frequently shadowed.
>$299 killed saturn
wrong. no games, no hype, and poor management did that.
>pc has always been better than consoles
not true for literally 99% of the populace until the pentium
>>
>>4178124
Akshully Saturn was sold at $399, it might not have been the main cause of the failure but sure as fuck didn't help.

What do people think of this sequel? I fucking love Banjo Kazooie but can't really stand Tooie. The backtracking is obscene, a lot of the moves are pointless, and some levels have huge dips in quality (Terrydactyland)

I even like DK64 more, which while more bloated was at least less convoluted

Conker really hasn't aged all that well

Just started playing this gem and I'm loving it so far. I had heard different things about it, with some people worshipping it and others shitting on the save system, lack of analog controls and difficulty, but none of that bothers me. The controls are extremely tight, overall good graphics, great jumping mechanics, and I love the simple yet deep gameplay. This game is a welcome contrast for something like MK64/Banjo for me, as I always associate those type of games with exploration and puzzle solving, whereas Crash is straight action and reflex. How do you think this game compares to other platformers of the era, or future installments?

You're losing people with the "gem" bit there, op.

I like these games, the second one specially (too much minigame bullshit in the third), but I always felt they represented a slightly lazy, narrow-minded approach to what 3D had to offer for platformer games. It seemed to me as the 3D was mostly used as wow factor slapped on top of game design concepts that were already stale by then in 2D games (essentially linear level design, death-and-retry checkpoint gameplay, and so on)

The people involved obviously knew what they were doing, but they simply didn't attempt anything particularly new or interesting. They just upgraded existing foolproof ideas with new technology. On hindsight, this kind of projects simply don't feel as memorable or worthwhile.

But again: I do like them, they're good fun.

A couple cryptic shit goes on in the 2nd game for gems such as ridiculous backtracking or finding teleports. Don't know what they were thinking with that one ice level where you have to backtrack nearly the entire stage for a bo death stone.

Is that retro?
>>
its 2000, is that considered retro?? fuck i thought it was and never actually contemplated it.

the cutoff year is 1999.

then, Thief 2 is discussed here occasionally, and that's a 2000 game. it probably depends on the individual case. in any case, expect some people to get angry.

Zelda 2 is damn good, and unfairly overlooked by many people today. Admittedly, it does have some flaws (mostly the graphics and poor translation/cryptic nature), but besides that it's a fantastic game and has some of the best 2D combat possible.

Zelda 2 has very fluid and responsive controls, which can allow the player to pull off very precise jumps, stabs, and slashes. The combat and controls are the best that could've be implemented in a 2D game like this. Compare the jumping and attacks from Zelda 2 with something like Castlevania, Double Dragon, or just about any 2D sidecroller with emphasis on combat. Almost all of the seem very, slow, clunky and limited in contrast to Zelda, even the ones released much later.

As for the enemies and dungeons, I find them very, very good as well. The game has many types of enemies that attack/must be fought in separate ways, and when added to the unique level designs found in different dungeons/encounters this makes the game constantly entertaining and engaging. The controls are perfect, practice for a bit if you don't get it straight away.

The game also expanded on towns, sidequests, magic, items, and added a whole lot of what can be considered today as "the zelda formula".

Thank you for the update that the good game was good.
>>
>>4184652
I agree.

If you invest time with this game it is a truly rewarding experience.
>>
>>4184652
Yeah, it's a game that still plays well considering the era it got released and its influences on later Zeldas (especially 3D ones) is remarkable.

However, I disagree that the controls are perfect. Especially later on in the game there are several areas like in Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden where you get knocked back by an enemy and fall in a pit because of that. That can be very annoying. There's also a lot less to collect and use if we're talking about items but it's not like the first Zelda had that many items to begin with and it wasn't till later games like LttP, LA and OoT that the items served a bigger purpose in both dungeon design and during combat.

I think a lot of people complain about this game because of what's NOT in it considering it's a Zelda game but when you take a look at the game itself and give it a chance then it can be a worthwhile experience.

Honest question.

How did you guys cope with shit like this back in the old days? And by this, I mean [Random important item necessary for progression hidden in the most unorthodox place possible you'd ever look for it.]

In this case, the Sun seal. It was randomly on some tree behind a shrine out in the middle of nowhere. Not in a dungeon, not a quest reward, not given by a prestigious or important figure. Its about as valuable as a common herb, And thats not even the start of it. DW1's LOTO's SEAL was even worse. Just randomly on the overworld map in some poisonous bog despite the "Hint" telling you to go 40 paces north and 70 west, which is NOWHERE near the location it actually is, in fact its clear across the opposite direction.

How the blazing hell did any of you have the patience for this kind of shit? Pixelhunting like this isn't even fun or exciting, its just plain tedious and frustrating. I get you had community forums, nintendo help hotlines, and tips n tricks books, but come on. That couldn't possibly have made these parts any more boring and frustrating for you right?

Share your experiences o wise ones.

Don't force yourself to play games that you don't like. No matter what approach I take to explain why I enjoyed this aspect of such and such game, you'll definitely still shake your head and call me an idiot.
>>
>>4184273
You give me far too little credit. I'm open to discussion and I'd like to hear your vies. I do enjoy the game, just not necessarily these parts of it. Its making progression a slog at times, and Now I feel overleveled because I spent the past 6 hours searching for the stupid thing.

NPCs give you hints for everything, just talk to everyone and write down what they say somewhere. I only had to look up a guide for one thing in DQ2, and I later ran into a NPC that had a hint for even that.
