I've been trying to get into the PS1, since I didn't grow up with it. The games are good, but what the fuck is this texture warping? Look, those lines on the road are supposed to be straight. I'm no graphicsfag, but this shit is legitimately distracting.
What did people think about this warping back in the day? Surely even in the early days of 3D gaming, nobody was looking at this and saying "yeah, that looks right".
I always thought 3D graphics were better than 2D so I never really complained at the ugly graphics, at the time I thought we'd never have the graphics we find in recent games nowadays.
I never really minded it very much. I even liked playing with it by moving the character/camera in and out to see how it would distort. It's not a remotely big issue, but I think I've grown to mostly like how the Saturn renders 3D. The lighting, cool sprite effects, quads, infinite planes all make for some really cool visuals that really impress me.
People didn't really notice, or give a damn. Everyone was still amazed at "OOOH, 3D!", the little details really didn't matter much.

Hello, newfriend.
Here on /vr/ - Retro Games, all consoles and games for consoles that were released after the Sega Dreamcast are considered "not retro", and therefore are not allowed to be talked about. Please delete this thread and recreate it on one of 4chan's other video game boards, including /v/ - Video Games, /vg/ - Video Game Generals, and /vp/ - Pokemon. Thank you for visiting.
you try the gaiden remake?
turned out bretty gud, not like awakening if you're one of those guys that gets butthurt about that.
>>4195475
derp
somehow didn't see it up there..
but yeah it's a pretty neat remake.
core game is still there, they just expanded on it.
Doesnt it just reveal everything that while americans were making games about meatheads killin shit the japanese were creating masterpiece like Final Fantasy VI that were on par with the greatest literature ever written? It is seriously stunning just how much more advanced the japanese were than the rest of the world back then.
>masterpiece like Final Fantasy
All based on a book written by Americans.
So we can agree that spreadshot was the best weapon, right?

It's true.
Japanese D'n D
does anyone recognize the game on the far left just below a bugs life?
It's Dark Rift, a terrible fighting game. Why are you asking?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Rift
Thats Dark Rift nigga
A full 3d rad fantasy fighting game
This and War Gods were awesome back in 96 when I got the n64
Get 2 more fighting games and you own the entire genre for the system
/n/ here once again. Post /vr/ trains from the 3D era.

Worst 3D graphics I've ever seen.
Best level in the game
So, the only Sonic the Hedgehog games I've played are Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on Gamecube. I've never played any of the 2d, classic (and highly praised) Sonic games. I had a SNES growing up - missed out, it seems. Never got any of the collection games or GBA titles.
Which ones are must plays? Skippable ones? Must avoids? I was tempted to just play 1, 2, then 3 but there's the GBA ones and Sonic CD (what is that?) and then there's Sonic 4, episode 1 and 2 (and 3 maybe?) and then Sonic Mania is coming out on PC too and it being highly praised, so I'd like to give it a try.
Any advice starting my adventures with Sonic the Hedgehod, dudes?Other than gotta go fast?
>>4194051
This order
1 (MD) > 1 (MS) > 2 (MS) > 2 > Chaos > 3 > &K
I recommend you get Sonic Jam to play the Mega Drive games and just buy the Master System ones, they're very cheap.
>>4194051
Stop now while you're ahead.
You played SA: DX but never unlocked a single extra game?
The classics being 1,2,3 are good. Why you're confused by SonicCD is odd. it came out for SegaCD. It was a Sonic game...on a CD. Avoid most ports of the classics other than the recent mobile remakes.
3D Blast is a like it or hate it deal. Spinball too.
The Advance/Rush games are nothing like the classics and play like even less fun versions of the Adventure2 Sonic levels only 2D
the 8-bit ones are neat and Tripple Trouble is a pretty legit entry.
Hey /vr/, what do you think about Front Mission Gun Hazard? Just finished it. It's an awesome game... for the first half anyway (it went meh specifically after it started focusing on the Guardian vs Society stuff). I really don't like where the story went, going from country to country doing mercenary work was max comfy. Also I might be overleveled, but the second half of the game was easy as shit. I don't think any boss from the second half gave me much trouble. Final boss was crappy shit that could be beaten with the Spark Gun only (Is that the name? the thing that looks like the Proton beam from Ghostbusters). Compare this to the awesome battle with the small airship that wanted to smash your face into oblivion on the desert. I'll be honest, I never ever grinded for level, I only grinded for money for new weapons because I just want those shiny, cool new weapons as fast as I can. Also I think we can agree everybody uses only Sakata as your partner, maybe sometimes Rook but mostly Sakata because everybody else is useless.
lets try that again, with paragraphs this time

Okay here goes:

I'm playing it too, and I'm at Atlas. Turns out I was severely under leveled. I had to grind to get the last Wanzer, then the Wanzer's HP was under leveled so I had enter/leave while taking damage. I've boosted my HP by 4000. I need to gain another level to use Shotgun 05 and Lazer 05.
Setup:
>Vulkan -05
>Vertical vulkan 05
>knuckle 05
>Healing 04
>blank
>blank
>Black dude partner
No clue what to even use for the last ones. Vulkan was carrying me through most of the game, but it's starting to fall off now. Only my knuckle seems to do major damage. Healing seems to be essential as everything hits like a mofo.
I don't see any way out of this than grind a bit for shotgun.
The great debate
>>4193418
3. It continued the flow of the previous two games and caps out the Raccoon City with a sense of finality. CV is fun and all but it's retarded even for RE standards, and is responsible for introducing a lot the elements that did the series in while actually undoing already resolved plot points and turning Wesker into a super villain when he was just a greedy asshole who got his way back in 1 was retarded
It's neither really a debate or all that great
>>4193419
>i don't like CV so isn't the real 3
Great opinion
Too bad Nemesis feels like a (shitty) side story
>>4193424
This. Resident Evil 3 was my first Playstation game, but Resident Evil 2 was played first on my N64.
When I think of Resident Evil, the good and classic design, I think of games with two playable characters that slightly alter the story. Chris/Jill for RE1, Leon/Claire for RE2 and Chris/Claire for Code Veronica
The bad and cheap Resident Evils always skimped out on this, like Survivor, Dead Aim and yes, RE3.
Two questions:
1) Given that there are systems where Component/RGB output was possible, but not available through stock cables and/or systems, and given that games on these systems sometimes use visual effects that do not properly display in higher-quality output than RF or Composite, how can one say that they are playing such a game/system 'correctly' when not playing on RF or Composite? Doesn't that indicate a divergence from what the developers tried to achieve?
2) What's the value of an HD-capable CRT over a modern HD-capable LCD, LED, etc. TV? There are now LCD displays that display HD images and are lag-free, so what is the real benefit of playing HD images over a CRT by comparison?
I only ask for reasonable, level-headed responses. Thank you for all such replies.
1) This implies that I give a shit what the developer wanted. I play my games how I like them.
2) My 1080p monitor is among the best you can get in its class but I still prefer the image of my CRT over it. If you have a PC CRT try looking at some moving images on both, the LCD will have horrendous blur compared to a CRT of the same refresh rate. Another issue with LCD tech is the colour reproduction and black levels being kind of garbage.
>>4193072
1) Hopefully, I wish HD Retrovision makes some kind of box which applies a smoothing filter and you plug in Component or RGB SCART cables there.
Also, I prefer Component YPbPr/RGB any day over Composite/RF, though there are some exceptions where Composite looks better to my eyes, i.e. the NES/Famicom.
2) For 1080i content, in my opinion. LEDs, LCDs, etc... can't handle interlaced content properly.
But there exists an interlaced HD resolution called 1080i and your typical modern TV applies a deinterlacing filter to display them properly.
But HD CRTs display 1080i without any need for deinterlacing to make them look good.
There are many Blu-rays which are only 1080i, since Blu-ray can only support 24fps max in 1080p and you have to downgrade it to either 1080i or 720p to retain the higher frame rate, they include:
>many bonus features in many Blu-rays
>the Final Fantasy concert Blu-rays
>many other concerts
>I think there were also some Studio Ghibli Blu-rays which were in 1080i, mostly Japan-only documentaries
>the "Video Format Versions" of The End of Evangelion on Blu-ray are only in 1080i because some of the live-action footage was shot in videotape, the theatrical movie version of The End of Evangelion is in 1080p, though.
And many more.
TV broadcasts are still in either 1080i or 720p to this day. I prefer watching TV broadcasts in 720p because my 4K TV can scale 720p properly and it looks better than 1080i, in my opinion.
Also, thePS2 and OG Xboxcannot handle 1080p properly but it can play 1080i in some games.
> how can one say that they are playing such a game/system 'correctly' when not playing on RF or Composite?
Who fucking cares
what mega drive / snes games can I play and post about on 4chan? What's popular? Pic related was my jam back in late 90s
>>4192838
>what games does this echo chamber like I want to join the circle jerk guise!!
>>4192838
Play something divisive like Ys III: Wanderer's from Ys. Genesis or SNES version, pick your poison. Come back and tell us what you think.
Please convince me to buy one of these
What games do you recommend?
Baseball Stars 2, Turfmasters, KOF 96, Last Blade 2, Samurai Showdown 1
>>4192086
ty senpai
>>4192074
I have a 4-slot just like this, I have individual games like Last Blade and Mark of the Wolves but if you are planning on buying a cab straight up buy a 151 in one cart. Totally worth.
I always wondered, is there a collection of "cinematic" classic japanese videogames out there?
I mean games with lots of voice acting and/or animation
Examples:
Metal Gear Solid
Xenogears
Ace Combat 3 (jap)
That kinda stuff
Yes, it is called the PS1 library
>>4190173
You're pretty limited if you want translated stuff. And it's just going to be max 5min cutscenes and the normal just 30 sec clip here and there. Resident Evil for example.
Cinematic games don't really exist pre 6th gen consoles with the modern meaning. You get some games on the PC though that fit the meaning. Examples like Black Dahlia or Gabriel Knight.
What is your opinion on the list of retro zones they went with for Sonic Mania, /vr/?
I'm interested in if they'll fix Stardust Speedway. The style is neat, but the platforming was a bit weak originally.
Also, here's the complete list of levels returning from the Genesis games:
Green Hill Zone
Chemical Plant Zone
Flying Battery Zone
Stardust Speedway Zone
Hydrocity Zone
Oil Ocean Zone
Lava Reef Zone
Metallic Madness Zone
I'd call out spoilers, but I'm pretty sure the original manuals had a list of levels.
>>4190102
> Green Hill
> Chemical Plant
> Hydrocity
> Flying Battery
That list aligns disturbingly with what I would have asked for; I guess I'm a pleb
>>4190102
Oil Ocean is an odd choice, but eh.
I am thinking of buying a Wii since they can be purchased for $60.
Are they really great at emulation?
How difficult it is to mod your Wii and get emulators for it?
How do N64 and Turbo CD games run on it?
Some N64 is okay via emulation, moreso via injected .wad files. I played Rondo of Blood perfectly via virtual console but haven't messed with any Turbo CD roms through Hugo but I imagine they'll play fine.
They're a pretty good, super easy and cheap emulation option that can output 240p natively. Damn good value, really.
Hacking them is ridiculously simple these days, just use letterbomb and you'll be set.
N64 in general isn't great. Virtual Console .WADs are your best bet for most of them but Not64 can handle a couple popular titles. Not well versed with TurboCD but I believe a few of those games got official VC releases as well. I'd imagine emulation of those is much better than N64 by a wide margin.

I used mednafen to play rondo the last time I beat it and it ran fine.
This is the form to suggest games for Game Center CX. Answers should be in Japanese. First line is name, second game suggestion, third game center suggestion.
So far I've suggested:
>Silent Hill 1
>Assault Suits Valken
>Rock man 9
>The Adventure of Little Ralph
>Rondo of Blood
>Symphony of the Night

The guide has an episode list if you want to look up what he's played already.

Watching Mansion of Hidden Souls and loving it so far. I love the idea of these 3D exploration games. (I know it's fake 3D, shut up).

Pretty straight forward. The game has a black board that just tells you all the hints.
