How do you guys deal with battery leakage in old consoles?
I just found my old Game Boy, but being that I was a kid the last time I used it and didn't know batteries could leak, I never took them out - and now the batteries are corroded. It doesn't seem like any of the internal components are damaged, but the springs in the battery compartment are pretty bad looking. It won't turn on unless I use the AC adapter.
What does /vr/ recommend? Do I have to replace the whole battery compartment or can I try to restore it?
Pic is not mine, I'd take a picture of my Game Boy but I can't at the moment.
Worst case scenario would be that the battery contacts get corroded. Not hard to replace those...
The crystallized acid itself can be dissolved with fluid like alcohol.
The corrosion will need to be removed since it's nonconductive. Scratch it of with an emery board, dentist pick or whatever you have. Assuming the acid stayed in the battery compartment the worst issue is generally if it's completely destroyed one of the negative springs, just replace them. If the acid had gotten to the PCB and destroyed traces you'll need to rebuild them with conductive pen. Damaged chips may need to be replaced.

If the leak is from alkaline batteries, you can completely remove it with a little vinegar. Dab some vinegar onto a cotton ball or a paper towel or something, and lightly scrub the "battery acid" (which is actually a base, not an acid). The vinegar will react with the white stuff like it does with baking soda, fizzing and then turning into a relatively harmless solution that you can wash away with plain water.
Last night I cleared the first game and now just started the second one.
This time I decided to play as the female character to see how talking my way out of stuff would work...
Turns out I'm relying on sex and feel kinda gay.
Tried a charismatic male with high speech but noticed using Sex Appeal just makes other men hate me, so talking it out of question.
Which traits are the most useful with its cons not hindering me so much?
Also, Fallout thread.
How does this character look?

show perks and traits
9 int is good if a bit overkill.
Better criticals is the best perk because it allows insta-kills when you get it, and because of that high agility builds are all powerful. You can use Endurance and Strength as dump stats because nothing is going to save you from getting instantly murdered at some point in the game anyway.
So have at least 6 perception, 6 luck, and 9 agility. otherwise just do literally whatever you want.
Also Unarmed is by far, by far better than melee weapons.
Most of the important skill checks in the game are Science/Speech/Doctor, and I have absolutely made a character with those skills tagged and 2 Strength and 2 Endurance who instantly killed deathclaws by punching them in the eye.

Trade some Charisma for Agility. Agility is one of the most important stats in the game.

So, basically, all I need is this, a Jamma harness, a PSU, an MVS board, and commonsense level soldering skills, and I can make my own consolized MVS for 40% of the price these things sell for on Ebay? Glad I found that out before I shelled out $300 for one of those fuckers
You don't even need to have soldering skills if you buy a supergun

>http://arcadeforge.net/Supergun-MAK-Strike/Supergun-MAK-Strike::74.html
You could have been one of those retarded that shelled out $550 for an omega on top of waiting an entire month for the thing to come in. Then there's those wood neo geos, those are like $750.00
If you have basic soldering skills you can build your own for a pittance.
Its been a while since I've seen one of these, so lets discuss Classic TES games; favourite builds, characters, current run through's etc.

Personally I wouldn't mind if these sort of threads became more frequent and organised, similar to the DOOM threads, but maybe that's just me.

I want to go back to Zelda I and finish it once for all (the last time I played, I think I stopped on the sixth dungeon), but I'm a bit worried at how this game is such perfectly hidden secrets and things. I really don't want to come off as a casual, but I don't think it's fun to keep searching for secrets and never find them.
I was wondering, is it okay to use the manual that came off along Zelda I? I mean, the one that has a map of the entire overworld. I thought it could help me, but not much at the same time. I mean, the game even has a message ingame which says to check up the manual for more details.
Also, which Zelda I version is the best to play? I'm decided that I'm going to play it on my 3DS, but I just wanted to know if there's a better version to play the game.
>>3756627
>how this game has such perfectly hidden
Fixed.
>>3756627
>I was wondering, is it okay to use the manual that came off along Zelda I?
I can't believe people are so averse to using guides that even the manuals are seen as cheating.
Not only is it okay, it's actually highly encouraged, as the manual tells you a few important details that you don't learn through normal gameplay, such as burning bushes, pushing blocks, enemy drop rates, and an overworld map.
In facy, in a recent interview, I believe Miyamoto mentioned that the Manual is actually an essential part of playing Zelda 1.
Also, if you';re emulating the game, I suggest you patch the game with the Automap patch, and the re-localization patch.
>>3756650
>the game that literally says at the end of its intro "PLEASE CONSULT THE MANUAL FOR DETAILS"
>there are people who think using the manual is "cheating"
Is it within the realm of possibility to fulfill a desire to truly experience retro games without using emulators, the Virtual Console, etc? Specifically NES and SNES games.
I know some of the games get expensive as dick, but I'd like to be able to actually collect the games. I'm not really opposed to the idea of using a flash cart, but deep down inside of my soul I know I'd rather be able to collect the original cartridges themselves
>>3755887
>I know some of the games get expensive as dick, but I'd like to be able to actually collect the games.
Get a fucking job and learn to budget, they're really not that expensive compared to other costs of regular adult life. Anyone who's not a starving student should be able to afford collecting if that's what they want to do.
>>3755892
But it's not the only thing I like to collect, dickweed. Shit adds up, and sometimes the prices for individual games are ridiculous. And when you compare 70 bucks for Super Metroid with 40 bucks for a used copy of a new game, yeah, it's pretty expensive from my point of view.
>>3755907
>and learn to budget
I'm so sorry that you can't buy everything you ever possibly wanted. And yes Super Metroid will be expensive. It's a collector's item. You're a collector.

Been working on figuring out the best N64 stick.
Controller in pic is a 3rd party controller. TTC brand. Buttons feel good, and has a good stick. Apparently there are two models with the same packaging. This one's stick is great, but I've heard the other one is crap.
Lower right is a GCN style stick. It's from this listing: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0136JPKIS/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awdb_jYuHyb13JTZVC. They say that you might wind up with the old model (has a hole in the middle of the thumb pad on the joystick). I got the new model. I ordered from the Marketplace listings, with Amazon as the seller. Cost $11.95.
Lower left is another replacement stick. I got it for $10 at a local shop. It isn't as tight as the stick in that controller, but seems okay. I popped it open and it's the same mechanism as the OEM model, but with a little added silicon lube.
The stick in this controller is the closest to a brand new OEM stick I've found. The GCN style one is great, but some people might not like how different it feels. Lower left is the worst of the three, but the octagonal gate is the best of the three. I may try to swap out the gate but keep the mechanism.
Anyone have any other experiences or shit to add? Anyone repaired theirs and have a good technique?
>>3754449
This is what the good stick of that model looks like.

TTX brand controller, as in pic. Not TKK
Is this the biggest failure in /vr/ history?
>>3753772
Nah, according to this board this was
Nah.

/VR/ only cares if it had good games not if it was commercially successful
Never played this game. Altought I loved Goldeneye I don´t know what should I expect from it.
Recently found a cartridge for 10 bucks on a retro store. Should I buy it?
Sell me the game, /vr/
is goldeneye with a fuckton of options and less fps
>>3751508
it's pretty good but there's some serious performance issues. There was a remake for the 360 that was great, I think it's XBLA only however. Not the sequel, perfect dark zero.
Better than Goldeneye in the gameplay department, but the storyline in the first player mode is kind of lame and the le X-Files conspiracies and "grey" aliens were dated even when it came out.
Need the expansion pack to really enjoy it, so get that.
I really recommend it, especially if you play only Slayer missile launchers in the Egypt stage.
Hey Chief, how about a CRPG thread?
>>3748748
Then why did you post a picture of a character from a visual novel?
might and magic 6 was the most fun i've had in a long time
fuck these new RPGs where you're guided the whole way through and waste a bunch of time talking to niggers to learn about boring lore
You have 9999999999999999999999 eternities to name a more overrated game than Planescape Torment.
Yoshi's Island is such a nice game.

why create a new threat to say something we already know??
just joking, it's a a good title, and challenging

It's fun to ride until your friends see you on it.
Any other Mario game you could pass the controller back and forth on deaths and have fun but not this one

I dont see the problem about being saw playing it
In that case the problem is you
ITT you post your current systems and others suggest your next acquisition.
I'm looking for another PC OS to play games on, and a few old towers. I've got Win95, Win98, MSDOS5, and Arch linux. What'll it be?
Windows 2000 with Pentium 4
Windows XP with Core2Quad
Here's what I got. I don't want anything else.
I have a lot (10-15 depending on what you count, some have been cannibalized) of old PCs in the Pentium Pro/Pentium II generations. Most originally had windows 95 or 98 but many have been overwritten in the intervening decades during my early experiments with linux, BSD, etc.
A handful of older or newer ones too. An HP desktop with an early pentium 4 that I still use for web browsing and file hosting occasionally, some 486 towers and assorted ancient laptops.
I collected them mostly in the early 2000s when many people were upgrading to windows XP machines and throwing out their old ones. As a kid I learned a lot about computers from messing with them. I used to try to keep all of them set up at once in a "computer lab" in my parent's basement. Now they have all been disconnected and stacked in a corner somewhere. Honestly I'd like to give them away if I knew I could get them to someone who would actually use them. I know some of the higher end 90s video cards I have may actually be of use to people interested in certain retro PC games.
Can we please talk about the classic Resident Evils? As someone who grew up with the franchise, I can say it was fantastic for the first 4 games. Now that Resident Evil is a first person shooter, the series is officially dead to me.
