Can we get a Myst thread going?

I grew up on Myst and Riven. I spent HOURS wandering those worlds. Anyone else enjoy the beautiful and detailed Ages?

Loved Myst. I didn't like how Riven was one huge open world, I haven't actually completed it yet. I just wander around trying to figure stuff out then moving on when it looks like I've tried everything.

Very frustrating, I've lost track of all the stuff I've gone past. In Myst at least the puzzles were compartmentalized. Riven seems more like a psychology experiment when you're in a huge land full of levers that do nothing.

Maybe I'm just a brainlet tho. Beautiful games!
>>

OP here.

Actually, I liked Riven more than Myst, partly for the reason you disliked it. I loved the whole world feel.

The puzzles were really cool in Riven, in my opinion and I loved the way the world kind of changed around you as you solved them (like how shutting down the boiler on Crater Island would open a path to get to the back end of the Great Golden Dome on Temple Island, allowing you to open a second bridge around, so you could access the press puzzle).

I liked how there was actually visible life in Riven. You could see the Sunners laying on their rocks on Jungle Island (and if you were cautious, you could approach them), the Wharks in the observatory in Plateau Island, the Beetle on Jungle Island, and a few of the D'Ni people around the world.

For some reason, the Steam version won't run properly on my PC, which makes me sad.

Riven is still the uncontested king of atmosphere for me.

No game has ever made me feel this weird sense of unease and discovery while playing. The music obviously plays a huge part in this, but the world design is also top notch. Amazing what they could with 5 CDs back in the days.

I started collecting retro vidya 3-4 years ago but i quit pretty quickly because everything was super expensive.

In general have prices gone down or up?
Is this a good or bad time to start collecting?

What's the deal with this game getting thrashed on so much? I can't think of an entry in the series that is better outside of maybe 9. The music, bosses, art, gameplay, and general feel are all fantastic, which is incredible considering the game was developed in literally 3 months. Is there just something I'm missing here?

People really just hate the art direction.
>>
>>4201897

Why?
>>
>>4201897
People shit on it for a lot of reasons, art direction included.
The reality of the situation is two fold. It's not a bad game, but on the same system with X2 and X3, it's not the best on the system, to most people. People like to talk in extremes, so because it's not as good as X3, it's absolute trash.

The second part is blind NES love. There's no way you can actually have played Mega Man 1 lately, and think it's a better game than 7, but blind NES fanboyism allows it on a regular basis.

People shit on 8 too, because they read on youtube that it was bad and the funny voice acting. People are stupid.

i recently bought this ps 1 as "untested", I had to replace the cd drive and there was this unbearable noise/clipping/distortion in the sound of the games (except for the cutscenes/ audio cds). The guilty joint was on IC106, which is labeled as " cpu dram" on some russian hw wiki. The gross thing you see in the picture is my work. There were two cold joints, the one causing the sound issues was pin 14. The other one was pin 26. I broke that one and I'm fucking angry at myself now. The system works, it runs games, but I'm afraid it will glitch or write invalid save data or something. Basically, my first reason for creating this thread is that people with the same problem can find this post in the archives. My real reason: does anyone a schematic of that Toshiba chip? I really hope that it was just some ground pin, damn. please, no bully about my soldering

What exactly was your iron setup? As in, what iron, what heat setting, what tip, what kind of solder, what kind of solder sucker?

Trying to figure out how you fucked up this bad, because this shouldn't have been a hard repair at all.
>>
>>4201849
I bundled up a bunch of matchsticks onto a butter knife and lit them. I used plastic as solder.
>>
>>4201763
Oh, and I'm not trying to break your balls, I'm trying to be helpful. If I can get your workstation setup, I may be able to help you chose better settings in the future so it doesn't happen again.

And I've googled for this memory module. All I can figure out is that it's EDO Dram made by Toshiba, and that Toshiba exited the memory business some time ago. I can't find a datasheet anywhere, not even on Micron's site (who bought Toshiba's memory business).

If you start getting a bunch of errors, you may have to either junk this PS1, or find a broken one to pull a memory chip out of.

What are some games that you had fun with on your first ever playthrough but found it excruciatingly boring and tedious to play the second time around.

Wonder Boy in Monster World. Fun and charming game the first time, but man this game is a fucking chore to play after the first time. It's been about 2 years since I beat it the first time too

Since Sonic Mania still isn't out on PC yet, I decided to scratch my sanic itch and play Sonic CD.

This game is really fucking great. The levels are so interesting and complex, the soundtrack is really amazing, and it's the most challenging classic sonic game i've beaten.
Does anyone else think this game kinda rocks?

Was Rockman Complete Works proper ports, rebuilds or emulation? I'm asking sine they're basically perfect with zero sprite flicker, slowdown, and various visual glitches removed. They are the best versions of the "Mega Man" (Rockman) Famicom games.

Emulation = Famicom games running in an emulator
Ports = Original source code updated to run on Playstation
Rebuild = Game assets removed from Famicom game, and built in a new engine.

Definitely a port. Otherwise they couldn't have added the CD music and the PSX-level graphics. However...

Complete Works is a shit version. The sound/music are awful.

If you play in original mode, the music sounds like it's been recorded through a webcam mic posted in front of desktop speakers, and I'm probably not far from the truth considering they had to turn 8bit music to CD music.

If you play with the CD music instead, well, not all of them are good, and then you're forced to play with the horrible changed unfitting HUD, and Eddie "helper" telling you where to go everywhere scroll when it's not needed

And then in any case there are a FUCKTON of sound glitches, like sounds not cancelling when they should. For instance if you charge a shot, but stop charging, the charging shot sound will continue anyway... some other sounds have huge delays...

Can we have a Atari 2600 appreciation thread? I feel like it's a very underrated console especially nowadays, and it's overlooked because of the graphics even though it was the first real breakthrough video game console. So post your favorite atari games that still hold up today.

Vanguard used to be a big deal at the time but I rarely see it brought up these days.
>it's a shoot'em up designed by SNK, a Japanese company
>it's the grandad of both vertical AND horizontal shmups. It came a year after Xevious yet feels much more "modern"
>you can shoot to the sides which is a feature rarely seen in shmups even to this day
>>
I have to admit, when I checked out 2600 games I was turned off by how many games were just arcade ports. Those aren't really a big deal now since you can just emulate the originals.
I did enjoy the River Raid games, at least.

Freeze Man's AI is pretty simple. I think the only thing he does is jump whenever he gets shot at.

Having stuff trigger when being shot is common in MM games. Darkman1 does the same thing in MM5, he shots when he gets shot at. Then, some other enemies/bosses are based on which buttons the player presses on his pad.
Try Mr.Gimmick on NES. Basic enemies have better AIs than that.
>>
So I went on a binge making Mega Maker levels, and my favorite robot master was Metal Man. If you get close to him, he jumps over you. If you're far away, he throws things at you. I put him in a room with moving platforms and made his weakness a weapon that works best in close range. The result is he jumps all over the place throwing a million buzzsaw blades and it freaks people out because he acts like he's throwing a tantrum. But I also put a pit in the middle of the room. If you understand he jumps when you get close to him, you can trick him into falling into the pit. People love that kinda thing.

On the one hand, I like Mega Man bosses because they always have some pattern. They're my favorite retro AI. On the other, I feel like any player who's got his ducks in a row should be able to beat a boss on their first try. Of course, he REALLY needs his shit together. What really happens is you fucking die over and over so you can learn the pattern, and once you learn the pattern, bosses are either easy, boring, or trivial.
