I can't find an answer on the web so I guess I'll ask here. Does anybody know why pickup items in Mega Man such as e-tanks, extra lives, and weapon energy flash, flicker, or change color along with him?
By the time of the X games I believe it was done intentionally but I have a strong hunch it started as a technical thing. So what's the technical reason? Does anyone know?
NES is limited to the number of colors it can display. The technique you're talking about is called palette cycling. I'm sure someone more autistic will come along and explain it in more detail soon enough.
>>3839557
Isn't it obvious? Item pickups share the same pallette as megaman.
The NES is limited to using 4 different palettes consisting of 4 colors each at once.
1 is the color of mega man's suit
2 is mega man's face
and the other two are for the enemies currently displayed.
The second palette would make the pickups flesh colored.
Choosing 3 or 4 would also be pretty weird because then the pickups would change color depending on the currently displayed enemies.
The smartest choice would therefore be to make them be the same color as mega man's suit.

Nice thread.

I know that a lot of original Game Boy games will play in color, albeit very washed out colors, if played on a Game Boy Color console. What does the original version of Link's Awakening look like on a Game Boy Color? Not the DX version. The original grey cartridge version.
You can make it look however you want.
>Implying Left+B isn't the best option anyway
>>3839427
I used to play with right+B as a kid. I'm glad I grew out of that.

This is what the game looks like when you boot it in Gambatte.
Generally, when you boot a GB game on GBC, you get the default dark green palette. You can choose the one you want the way others have desribed.
But, quite a few of the most popular Nintendo titles, for instance SML, Kirby DL, DK '94, and so on had "special" palettes. When you boot them, they already start with an assigned palette stored in GBC's BIOS. Read up on it here https://tcrf.net/Game_Boy_Color_Bootstrap_ROM
I created a checklist to help me decide if a game is worth playing. A game doesn't need to get a yes for everything on the list, but it sure helps. It's surprising what games actually suck when I've reviewed games like this, but I'm glad I analyzed them.
Anyway, I'm looking for feedback. What could be done to improve this list? Should I even use a checklist to determine if I should bother with a game? I feel like I should avoid games that aren't challenging (most modern games) because they don't stand the test of time, and I feel like I've wasted my money. And I HATE that feeling.
>What were the opportunities and constraints durings its development?
>What words and images do you associate this game with?
>What kind of claims does this game make about itself?
>Do you know WHAT to do?
>Do you know HOW to play?
>Does it give you feedback about your performance?
>Does it have a fail state? If not, it probably sucks.
>Before the challenge, can you prepare?
>Can you succeed if you prepare in different ways?
>Does it REQUIRE you use more than one action?
>Do you have to analyze how actions work and behave?
>Do you have to discriminate when and how you use an action?
>Does the play environment affect the challenge?
>Does it have multiple types of challenges?
>Does anything distract from the core challenge?
>Does it acknowledge influence over your thought patterns?
>Did the game make good on what it claimed to be?
>What could refine this game?

You can't quantify fun, Anon.
Some of the most enjoyment I've had came from games that were total dogshit but which managed to charm me anyhow.
>>3839312
I don't see how that's the case when games are closed systems based on programming.
>>3839312
Also, yeah, you can enjoy shit games, but it's for the wrong reasons. For example, Half Life 1 is supposed to be an action game, but there are a lot of places I ran into where it took me a while to figure out where to go. For this reason, my first couple playthroughs I treated it like a puzzle game.
Just bought a Dreamcast and a composite to HDMI converter, I'm pretty sure the cables are fucked up because whenever I plug them in, nothing shows. I thought it would be the converter box that caused the problem but I plugged in my GameCube and Nintendo 64 and they displayed a image, what should I do? Any recommendations on a video cable? A lot of the ones on Amazon say they fuck up the quality of the image or they barely fit into the Dreamcast.

Playing a Dreamcast with composite out should be a punishable by getting shot but I'll throw you a bone here: VGA.

best 85 dollars you'll spend trust me
luckily i bought the hanzo from them 3 years ago when they were still 60 bucks
Though im a pretty skilled mtg player, is anyone else having a hard time figuring this game out.
Probably because it's absolutely nothing like paper Magic
>>3838709
its a mixture of command and conquer click and drag and magic the gathering. you summon your monsters with cards as they come up in the deck and you can click on them then click on the player on the very top of the screen, outside of your current screen, up on the map, and your monsters will go fly or walk to them and attack, then they appear back at your base and do it again, if they summon a monster it can block your monster, you can exploit this mechanic to get some hits it if their monster is on the wrong side of an obstacle
It is worth playing 26 years later? and what do you expect for Back In The Groove ?

Is toe jam and earl worth playing all the way through? Yes. Actually did it a few days ago with a buddy of mine who loves this game. Never got to the very end as a kid. It was fun.
This new toe jam and earl game looks stupid. I just dont like the animation at all. Music seems cool though...i actually forgot about most of what the new game is about but i remember thinking "jesus christ...this game looks fucking dumb"
I hate it for using the GEMS sound engine.
if you love the aesthetic, sure. but there are better roguelikes you could be spending your time with
thinking about selling my retro games.
Is there an easy way to sell most of my stuff with out having to sell everything individually?
No problem, I'll take everything you've got, €27.
>>3838125
Ebay is the quickest. If you piece it out you will get more from ebay. It will be worth your time to piece it out.
Pawn shop.
Buy or Sell threads here. If there is not one then start one and list everything.
Post on forums. This may actually be your best best. Just list everything you have with prices and post it to various forums. GameTZ is a good place to start.

Can we have a Midtown Madness thread? As a kid I played the fuck out of the first two games and they were fun as hell.
>>3837760
My sisters and I used to play Midtown Madness all the time. Mostly Cruise mode, driving around fleeing from cops and doing jumps over the raised bridges. It was a bit like GTA3 before GTA3. Except all driving and no murdering.
My older sister used to always try to obey the law while playing which I thought was weird.
>>3837760
>the first two games
As far as I'm concerned that third game doesn't exist.
Thoughts on this, /vr/? Is it worth it?
Well... What mods have you already done and what do you use your a500 for? Mine doesn't even boot.
>>3837397
Are you into demos or homebrew?. If you just want to play games get a gotek, the acceleration and speed is good, but not 80$ good.
>>3837397
Nah, senpai. Get the Vampire 500.
>tfw I google é›·é›» hoping for pictures of cool fighter jets in red or blue colors but instead get some faggy cyborg weeb
Anybody else feel my pain
Why are you looking for gay porn, anon?
I get green or b&w prop planes.

What?
I've been trying to find the name of one point and click adventure game, but I can't remember it for the life of me.
It's cartoony, and I'm pretty sure it had cavemen and dinosaurs in it, and I think it was in the late 90s that I played it. It was not Lost Eden.
Also games you can't remember thread, I guess.
>>3836332
Looks like nobody remembers
It's obviously I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, feel-good game of the year 1995
>>3836332
Probably not this, but check if it was Echo: Secret of the Lost Cavern.
My 3DO phat is making a grinding noise when playing discs.
I stongly suspect this is caused by discs slipping on a rubber disc in the drive which has become dirty (dust, lint, small hairs). This small disc presses against the center of the CD-R so the drive spindle can apply torque and get up to speed.
I could clean this with rubbing alcohol but I've hear that spirits cause rubber to dry and crack.
I could clean this with goo gone or similar cleaners but they leave a residue that I don't want getting on my discs or evaporating into the console.
I could clean this with water but since I can't remove this part some water will drip into the other parts of the drive and cause rust.
What is the best way to clean rubber on retro systems and accessories?
acetone
