I'm going to be hitting San Francisco in a little while, is there anything notable by way of /vr/? Any arcades or must-hit shops?

Feel free to talk about your local scene or ask about others being spring break season, I guess.

Go to the Musee Mecanique. It's a game museum that has everything from pre-WWII mechanical games to pinball and video games.

There are a few arcades by pier 39 I think. One has some really early coin op machines.

You won't find any retro stores or anything like that in city.

nah, it's pretty shit here. the last good arcade closed about 5 years ago.

This did not survive the retro era but it was the best magazine there ever was.

I have a decades worth of Swedish PC-gamer magazines on my attic (starting at 97 or 98), all the demo-CD's as well. Good times, some day I must set up a laptop with windows XP and try to plow through as many as I can get working, that'll be a nostalgia overdose and I might die, but it'll be fun none the less. .

I think, more than anything else in retro gaming, gaming magazines are the thing I miss most.

Growing up, my parents hated my gaming hobby, but they loved the fact that it got me reading, and it got me engaged in something.

My dad didn't understand anything about "Those damn games" but he would see me reading Tips & Tricks or something, and ask "What're you reading about?" and I'd tell him it was some preview or some guide on how to get through a part of a game, and he'd ask me my opinion on that. I also had a couple letters show up in reader mail.

I also get a similar feeling of nostalgia from gaming forums from around 97~04. I used to sit and learn all my cheats and info from sitting up with neckbeards all night and ranting about whatever JRPG we were slogging through, at the time.

Sorry for the blogpost...

I spent more money in those magazines than in games.
Computer Gaming World was the first one, they gave you a complete game with every number, I remember playing shit like Bud Tucker for that reason. More than half of the games were graphic adventures, and I hated the genre so I played the demos to death.
Then there was OkPCGamer, just demos but some of the reviews were hillarious.
Basically 80% of my videogame hobby were those magazines. The other 20% was one or two games for christmas, birthday and in 00's the shit I could download at 5 Kb/s from Kazaa.

Forest because I love the atmosphere and the music.

Water is too cliché, so I'm gonna go with Fire. I'm just not a fan of fire levels, and all of the red and orange is hard on my eyes.

What's /vr's feelings on the imminent Dragon's Trap remake?

I'm pretty hype to be honest. The original on the Master System was one of my favourite games as a child and even now I still think it's one of the greatest 8-Bit games ever made.

For me, Dragon's Trap is one of the few early SEGA games which stood head-and-shoulders above most the NES library at the time.

Also, general Wonderboy thread I guess.

Apparently you can switch at will between proginal and remade graphics at the press of a button.

Also, the original passwords still work so you can continue your old ass playthrough.

That's all I need to know, anon. All aboard the hype train.

I'd rather they made a new game from ground up but that's just me.

Obviously this. OP, the way you play seems like it would be a hindrance. Your thumb looks to be extended to the point that your range of movement with the stick would be affected

Is there a definitive guide in English for Super Turbo?

I'm looking for something begginner friendly, that doesn't jump into technical shit (like frames and things like that) early on, without even explaining the terms.

/vr/, I've set out to actually catalogue my backlog. I am going to put forth an effort to actually play the mile-long list of games that I've been putting off.

My question is, now that I can physically see the wall of games I need to play, where the fuck do I start? I want to play them in such an order that one game sort've segues into the next. So, if I'm playing one JRPG, I might want to go into a similar JRPG.

What does your backlog look like, /vr/? How do you go about actually playing the mountain of games that you haven't dove in to, yet?

Also, how did I ever let it get this bad? I noticed a lot of the games on this list are things that I played about halfway through, really enjoyed, but haven't really touched in a very long time. How do I stay focused on this?

I have the same problem.

Discipline, basically. You wanna play games, JUST DO IT!
>>
>>3849042
I find it funny people have "backlogs" with games. If you don't enjoy a game and postpone starting it, why even play it? Why MAKE yourself play a game, did you ever ask yourself that?
>>
>>3849080
>did you ever ask yourself that?
Yes. I've sort've been thinking about how this list got this way, and I was wondering "Why didn't I play these all the way through, when I bought them?"

I think I just didn't have enough time when I bought them and thought, "Oh, I'll just get around to playing this later". Well, later never came. I kept doing other stuff or played games I was more familiar with. (Which is funny, because I have been playing a lot of new releases lately, and been sort've disappointed. Meanwhile, I have this massive box of old games I hadn't played much.)

I think one of the biggest culprits (for my list, anyway), is every time I go to a flea market or something like that, I'll see something of interest. A copy of Earthworm Jim 2 for 7 bucks, or something like that.

Not to mention all of the ports and roms that I haven't played through.

Besides, even if you don't have a physical list of games that you haven't played. If there are games that you've heard about or are interested in, but you haven't played them, then you too have a backlog. Everyone does, unless they've sat and played every game they wanted to, whenever they wanted to.

Best videogame based in DnD mechanics/settings? I played my first DnD game like a week ago (3.5e) and had a fucking blast.

You might be disappointed since all the retro ones are based on earlier rules that were quite a bit different from how 3.5 works. I love D&D, but not so much computer D&D. Planescape Torment is is about the most widely praised though.

So is there any strategy other than just spamming Ice Slasher from the start and tanking his hits resulting in a race to kill the other first?

I've always beaten him this way and it makes Wily's Castle a punch in the dick. I can do Yellow Devil and Wily flawlessly but Fireman always does a shit ton of damage no matter what I try. Any tips? I'm just looking to improve my MM1 run.

I confess that I had to look up on the internet too for a strategy to beat Fireman, since I wanted to do a buster only run.

My only problem is avoiding his first attack consistently.

any suggestions then? I'm trying to get as close as possible to the real deal without using original hardware. inb4 real hardware is better, I have real consoles I'm just doing this to compare. So far I've noticed there's still a tiny bit of input lag even with this wired controller, I tested it with super mario world. It's impossible to perceive without going back and forth between emulation and original, but it's there.
