What does /vr/ think of croc 1 and 2? I really liked the first one, it was pretty difficult as a kid. I thought the sequel was okay.

I see a lot of people on /vr/ bitch about the camera and "tank controls", it worked perfect on the PC. They must have played the playstation or saturn version.

Is there seriously not a single controller option out there that:

- Has a smartphone mount
- Has a D-Pad that isn't trash?

Don't point me at 8bitdo's shit, their D-Pads are Xbox 360 level bad. They print their circuit boards wrong so it can't register diagonal input properly. It's too bad because their controllers /feel/ great, but if what's inside is no good, well, then it's no good.

I wish there was a controller with GBA SP-like buttons. Those were the shit.
>>
>>3863493
True, they were great. Not too deep, nice and clicky. The n3DSXL has buttons and a D-Pad with a similar click, which feels nice, but the D-Pad is under that circle pad thing. I didn't want to make my 3DS my main portable emulating machine for that and a few other reasons (screen isn't as good as my phone, have to fuck around with injecting CIAs, etc). I'm thinking maybe just wait for the Switch pro controller to get a phone clip, but the D-Pad is in the "wrong" spot again, like the 3DS and Xbox controllers. Does anyone here have one? How comfortable is it despite that?

I was also considering using an original SNES controller and getting the phone clip for the 8bitdo version of it, and just plugging it into my phone via USB, but I'm not sure if the original controller will fit the clip, and even if it did, I'd have to find a way to drill a hole in their clip to get the cable through somehow.

What a headache.

Post your high-scores and talk about your favorite/least liked pinball table

I don't remember my high score, but Earth Shakers was one of my favorite tables that I went to this one bar for. It was the best to me. The game had a bunch of vibrators or something in it, so when you had an earthquake happening your ball would wobble around the board. The game was propped against a wall and there were some stairs nearby that lead up to the manager's office. The manager came down and asked me to stop playing because I had evidently been rattling some of the books off his shelf in there.

He payed for my meal, though. I'll consider that worthy of whatever score I had that day.

It's not exactly like Silent Hill, but I think any fan of playstation horror games should check out Hellnight (AKA: Dark Messiah).

It's clunky, but the story is fantastic and the atmsophere is quite well done for such early 3D technology. I recommend having a guide available for reference since it is possible to miss items and get permanently stuck.

Could some knowledgeable person shed some light on the relationship between console vendors and third-party publishers when it came to manufacturing and distribution? I mean it in the context of /vr/ consoles, but it could probably apply to contemporary ones as well.

Specifically...

Who manufactured the actual game boards (PCBs) with the chips, batteries, and so on?

Who had the cartridge shells and printed the labels?

Who printed the boxes and manuals?

Who shipped the games and dealt with retailers?

Who ran the advertising and promotions?

Did the relationship vary drastically from publisher to publisher (that is, did some enjoy greater independence from the console vendor than others)?

Other than the well-known stuff (like censorship, exclusivity agreements, and annual publishing limits), how did Nintendo and Sega differ in their approach to third parties?

>>
I believe Nintendo for example left it up to the game's publisher to run ads, sell to stores, etc., while possibly manufacturing shells and PCBs themselves with fees coming in from developers.
I say this because I recall reading that Ken Kutaragi managed to swing a lot of third parties to PlayStation on the fact that Sony controlled all of the CD-R manufacturing and since they were cheap there would be no fees, and that Sony would go to retailers and handle wholesale and even marketing for many third party games (Final Fantasy VII).
>>
There wasn't any single company if that's what you're asking. Just like now, manufacturing was all outsourced to China. Some big studios designed their own PCBs and memory controllers, others licensed existing designs. I think Nintendo had some first party PCB and shells that developers could buy, but it's not like Nintendo was personally manufacturing them or anything.

Licensing is a completely separate issue from manufacturing. When developing a Nintendo game, you had to send them a copy for review and they would license the game, assuming it met Nintendo's guidelines. If you tried to release unlicensed games, they'd hit you with frivolous lawsuits that most companies didn't want to deal with, but you still saw some.

>Licensing is a completely separate issue from manufacturing

Yes, I'm somewhat conscious of the pre-manufacturing process, beginning with publisher <> vendor courtship all the way to the end of a game's production. (based on the official SNES developer manual)

I was more interested in the economics and logistics of things once a game was given final approval for public consumption.

Then if Nintendo didn't itself produce the cartridge shells, did they mandate a specific design so that all games would look the same, like a franchise restaurant? The only one I can think of that stood out was the red Doom cartridge.

Unremarkable Wipeout knockoff also available on PC but it's still amazing that unreleased prototypes like this are found. I wonder how long that guy squatted on that devkit hoping for some personal profit out of it.

I wanna get into retro gaming, like really into it. I don't care for collecting, I just like playing games and having fun. I've played around with most of the mainstream brands like Pokemon and Zelda and etc but I have dabbled in obscure games too. Obviously I'm an emulatorfag.

So how do I into retro gaming? What should i download or play?

There's a /v recommended games wiki which could be a good place to start. Another method would be just to look at the highest rated games for whatever consoles you like. Or just download a full ROM set for a console and pick games at random.

What genres do you like? That is also a good starting point.

I've always ignored Arcade Emulation but I feel like I SHOULDN'T. I got a Mame emulator like 10 or 15 years ago. Played my Metal Slug games which I LOVE and adore and that's about it. Of course I feel like I am missing out now. Where do I get started though? What do I read up on? I know there is CPS1, CPS2 and CPS3 but I am not even exactly sure what is what. Is this all compatible with the Mame emulator? What games are there to play? It often felt like every game is a fighting game like Street Fighter and while I love Street Fighter it isn't too much fun if you have no friends. So really what should I play? What's out there?

I remember Sega had a LOT OF GREAT onrail shooters. Those are great. What system would I have to emulate for this? What games can you recommend? I remember playing a game in the Arcade where you are on like a Safari and you ride around in a jeep and then there are Giant Spiders. I also remember a Zombie Shooter that's still in my local Arcade and it isn't House of the Dead. You sit inside an arcade and you wear those 3d glasses and wind is coming from the sides if some zombie monster thing appears. Is this even emulateable? Guess this isn't even retro.

tl;dr: Arcade emulation for retards. Where do i start? What should I know and read up on? What games are good and fun?

You want GroovyMAME set up with an AMD/ATI graphics card with hacked drivers. It will output accurate low-frequency RGB signals to CRT at the original resolutions and framerates. Perfect signals, cycle-accurate CPU software-based emulation. Hook it up.
>>
What you're describing is probably 5D Monster Eye or 4D Dark Escape which have way too many gimmicks to emulate and run on special hardware locked PCs that haven't been cracked anyway, not that they're retro.

Considering arcade games were a constantly advancing technology for the entirety of the /vr/ era they're kind of hard to narrow down. You probably experienced them entirely in the 90s when they were indeed dominated by fighting games. The other most common type of arcade "classic" is the one-screen score challenge game like Pac-Man or asteroids but there's no shortage of straight forward 2D platformers including run n guns like Metal Slug.

Do you want more games like metal slug or do you want to follow into other platforms like the rail shooters you mentioned?

I can emulate CPS1/2 and NEO-GEO fine, but everything else requires me to hunt down specific emulators/images to work. Is there a way to emulate everything easily without googling histories of each game?
