Are any of the Donkey Kong Land games worth playing? They look pretty ugly.

Land 1 is only acceptable on a Game Boy Color with preset palette so you can see the sprites. Land 2 is just dumbed down DKC2. Land 3 is a legit good game and the Japanese version has colors.
>>
>>4219671
First one is fun. It's mainly the jungle levels that are ugly. The first level is jungle so people see that and assume the whole game is like that. Notice anyone who posts on here criticizing DKC with an image always posts the same screencap of Jungle Hijinxs.

Second game feels big and empty and ultimately the biggest missed opportunity.

Third one is the best by far. The JP version is a proper GBC game, so it has full color and so on. There is an English patch out there.
>>
3 is legit good. Play the Japanese version, because it has GBC color palettes. The US/EU versions were released 3 years earlier and are monochrome only.

Ok so how the flying FUCK do I play the Twisted Metal games on ePSXe? Every file of any of the games I download are just a bunch of bin files and one cue file that I can't make into an iso file no matter how much I try. Been a while since I emulated PSX but I'm pretty sure other PSX games are available as single iso files.

Just open the cue.

>>4219140
cue/bin is basically the same thing as iso, just load the cue file

There's your problem. Use Mednafen or Xebra.

I can't wait. I intentionally do not read anything about games, and I have not played this one yet. I am running through FF Tactics one more time, than this was next on my list. Thanks. I was pondering this or Chrono Cross.....which I did years ago for a developer ending....

FF9 and the original Tactics are masterpieces. Everything else is straight up shit.

I had a Donkey Kong Country file with 104% completion (I hear the final digit can randomly vary) And none of the kids at school believed me.

I've read that the OSSC doesn't work with certain TV's (mainly with SNES). Is this likely to become less of an issue with newer TV's, or more of an issue?

Grew up an only child and most of my friends were into Fighting and Sports games growing up (which I never cared for), so I never really got to co-op retro games much.

What are the absolute best retro co-op experiences? And I mean the games best specifically for co-op (so single player doesn't mean a thing here.)

Not a fan of most beat em ups, but I do like the TMNT ones and Golden Axe so no need to recommend those.

Goof Troop
Contra series
Gunstar Heroes
Metal Slug series
Gauntlet Legends
Joe and Mac
Turtles in Time

Basically any arcade series.
>>
>>4218072
1. You can't co-op in fighters, at least not most of them.

2. If I don't like fighting games, they're blatantly not the best choice for me personally.
>>
>>4218082
Yeah missed the co-op somehow. Try Twisted Metal 1 and 2 and others if you like those.

Toejam and Earl might appeal

Most of these games are great, but on the expensive side as far as Gameboy games go. And unless you read Japanese, Pokemon TCG2 won't be very fun which is unfortunate as it's my favorite game of the ones you mentioned. I'd suggest buying a flash cart instead so you can realistically play them all and get translations for some Japanese exclusives.
>>
>>4217959
Holy fuck I always wanted Rolan's Curse when I was a kid but never could get a hold of a copy and must have forgotten about it for 20+ years before this thread thanks for reminding me.
>>
>Pokemon Trading Card Game 2
This spinoff series is shit. Honestly. Unless you've already played it and decided you do indeed think it's worth owning, I wouldn't bother.
>Trip World
This is just hipster food. The game has a great art direction, but the gameplay is typical platforming fare. It's also quite short. By the way, you can get a repro cart of this dirt cheap if you simply wish to play it. Try AliExpress.
>Kid Dracula
Incredibly niche. I'm not sure even the most diehard CV fans can force themselves to like this game. Hopefully you've already played it before deciding to purchase it.
>Mole Mania
This is more of the type of game you should be looking for, because the gameplay and content are deep enough that you'll get your money's worth.
>Gargoyle's Quest
Great game, but pretty expensive on the reseller market. Also fits the "Nintendo Hard" trope. It's essentially a Mega Man reskin.
>Castlevania
Adventure and Belmont's Revenge are both ludicrously slow-paced. Your character walks slower than a decrepit old man. Legends is a rather low-budget afterthought to the other two GB games. The writing is so terrible, I think the game was actually removed from the series' canon.
>Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters
Did you like the first game? It's basically a ROM hack of that. Everything except the level layouts is the same.
>The Final Fantasy Legend
Now we're talking. The first two have a lot of replay value since you can experiment with different class combinations. The third game does away with all of that and forces you to use scripted characters with their own backstories.
>Rolan's Curse
It's like an under-budgeted Zelda. I did not enjoy these games at all.
>The Sword of Hope
The mechanics are rather poorly fleshed out. Your own magic spells turn around and hit you instead of your enemies.

Anyone else here who is into arcade cabs?

Got myself a Blast City this summer and trying to get my hands on a Sega S-TV board.

Already got some Jamma PCBs and an Atomiswave.

Why? It was a mediocre-to-poor game that only got ANY notoriety by being an RPG on a console that was desperately starved of RPGs.

>>4217609
With a bit of polish, the battle mechanics could revolutionize the sRPG. Make positioning more important, more terrain, etc.

I've been playing Zelda games since 1993 and I still think that The Adventure Of Link is the best one in the retro Zelda installments
