Does anybody else think that the quick advancement of technology was detrimental to video games? I know, it sounds ironic because of the technological nature of games, but hear me out. When we talk about art/music/literature periods, we encompass a vast quantity of time for each of them, even the modern ones. Early romantic wasn't the same as late romantic and so on, we had styles that were perfected throughout time instead of thrown into the dustbin too soon. Do you imagine the baroque period in music dying before Bach wrote a single note? it would have been tragic innit?
In vidya you can feel the distinctness of each generation and how complex its last games were compared to the first ones, but they only lasted an average of 5 years. You compare Final Fantasy IV (1990) to Chrono Trigger (1995), or SMB (1985) to Gimmick (1992) and wonder about which type of games could have been made if generations lasted a lot more, with developers perfecting and maturing techniques without having to adapt and discard past techniques because a new generation was coming.

I feel we missed on several unborn masterpieces and the medium would be a lot more respected than it is now. Lots of people marvel at the technological progress we've witnessed but at the same time, gaming reached mainstream status thanks to powerful graphics while not having a strong enough "culture" or past behind that could offset the money-grabbing nature of vidya today. We have shit music, books & arts done today but also some good ones because they were developed and nurtured beyond a few decades. The older the medium is, the stronger it is at providing exceptional (as in "exception" from the pile of shit that is apparent to everyone) quality works in a era of mediocre super-capitalism. Vidya lacks tradition, lacks decades, if not centuries of perfecting its forms slowly, little by little. The film industry is relatively new too but thanks to its longer history compared to video games, we still have some good movies appearing out and an incredibly rich of past movies that it's almost endless, and that was just over a century of time.
Thoughts?
Videogames were a commodity first and an artform later
that seems to be your problem

Why is nobody talking about M&M games in these threads?
I'm not sure which is more annoying, shooters doing full damage from any distance or flyers being able to reach any part od the map in HoMM2. They kind of balance eachother out but I always lose my shooters.
>>3829281
Ask a question and it drives discussion, the same thing we tell the HoMM posters.

why do people consider the SNES to be superior again? do people play anything other than marios, zeldas and final fantasies?
Make a list of games instead of genres and you'll see why.
>>3880924
>why do people consider the SNES to be superior again?
Primarily because people associate more colors with more power, and fell for the Mode 7 gimmick. Also I guess people thought that synthesized music sounded more old-school than sample-based music so therefore it must be weaker.
>>3880924
>snes better at platforming
uh no sweety thats where ur wrong

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Both, of course.

Buy a PROPER fucking tv set with good deinterlacing and scaling built-in. Stop buying off-brand chinese shit.

Why is this game so good?
>>3818128
>Why is this game so good?
Because it's motherfucking Shining Force.
Are you one of the rare one's like me who prefer the first one over the second?
I just enjoy it's more serious tone and atmosphere, and the music in the game fits that perfectly. I listen to the soundtrack a lot to this day.
Also, since you made a SF thread you'd better brace yourself, the horsefags are coming.
>>3818154
>Are you one of the rare one's like me who prefer the first one over the second?
Based on the SF thread that I've seen on /vr/ I think most posters like the first Shining Force better than the second.
Myself included.
>>3818154
>the horsefags are coming
Oh no! Not the horse fags!
What's the best soccer game for the NES?
And not Nintendo World Cup Soccer, please.
>not playing Captain Tsubasa, the only RPG/Soccer game ever game
Isn't Nintendo World Cup the only has that supports 4 players?
>>3898615
>And not Nintendo World Cup Soccer, please.
Nintendo World Cup Soccer is the only good soccer game on NES kiddo.
>>3898652

Wait a second. There's new DLC for the Sega Dreamcast?
https://youtu.be/ONnlFmnJRmQ
Not really. It's just that nobody could access the rest of the Floigan Bros' on-disc DLC until recently, because they were encrypted.
Nice Nintendo Super Famicom controller there, I wish the American Nintendo Super Nintendo Entertainment System controller had funky colors like that.
>>3898147
Thanks. I took a super fami controller and a murica snes controller. I opened up murican snes controller and took out the wire and plug & put 'em in the super fami so you get the colorful buttons & the long wire!
I was looking at getting a 680-in-1 premade arcade box recently and stumbled upon the Pandora's box 4s.
I really want to get a 2p arcade emulation box and Pandora seems to be where it's at, anyone have any other good recommendations (also whether jamma or mame are better)?
Being a total scrub when it comes to these things I'd rather not go balls deep and build one myself, though I have built a PC.
>>3897896
Pandoras are good but there are a lot of "pandoras" that are shit. I honestly don't know how they even find hardware so shit that can't emulate old arcade stuff well.
If you're going for an all in one you either want to get it locally or through a solid recommendation. Quality ranges from top notch arcade to total shit. You can't just judge by the price. There is total shit out there selling for $250+ and top notch stuff for $150.
Do you have a decent display or are you gonna hook this up to a shitty walmart LCD?
>>3897896
I was looking at these on DHGate but they seem completely opaque. Are there any tells? Any way to figure out the good ones?
>>3897987
I have an awesome smart tv in the living room and an ultrawide BenQ gaming monitor.
I found a what seems to be a decent seller on Aliexpress, I was planning on getting one with Sanwa joysticks/buttons.
From what I can see it's really well made, but is it worth spending 450$ to import it?
I doing a thing that I call mega marathon were I play all the classic mega man games you join in on the fun to but there's some rules you play the games out of order but when you defeat a robot master you have to finish game rule 2 you can take a break from a certain game give a shot at another one rule 3 7 -8 count but you have to finish 1-6 any questions?
Any questions about this?
>>3897751
Are you diagnosed with asperger or anything similar? Your phrasing and rule-setting indicate "yes".
Let me grade your work.
It should be
>I'm doing a thing that I call "Mega Marathon", where I play all the classic Mega Man games. You'll join in on the fun too, but there are some rules. You may play the games out of order, but when you defeat a Robot Master you have to finish the game. Rule two; you can take a break from a certain game between Robot Masters and switch off to another Mega Man title. Rule three; you can consider 7 and 8 part of the marathon, but 1 - 6 have to be finished. Any questions?
Now your shit grammar and punctuation aside; rule two contradicts rule one. You've given no direct insight into how we "interact" with your marathon and you've not given any clear guidelines to how it will work.
Heys EGM just said you can play as all four Bond actors in Goldeneye 64!
>>3897484

>tfw I can't play Roger Moore in glorious 3D
>>3897543
There were only 4 Bond actors ever when Goldeneye 64 came out.
this dithering shit is so fucking distracting
>>3897207
you want fog? go play the n64
If you can't play it like God intended then don't play it at all.
Maybe you should play on a CRT like the devs intended

Do you post on a Microman group on FB?
Do you ever get overwhelmed by the amount of games you can play, to the point in which you feel like you aren't enjoying them properly?
Like, nowadays I feel like I play a lot of games just to get trough my backlog, rather than to actually enjoy them, I play games thinking only on finishing them, and a lot of the time not even bothering with any of the side stuff, because I have so many games that I've yet to touch (although most of them are digital, so I'm not hoarding any valuable carts), in contrast to when I was a kid, when I would get maybe 1 or 2 games every year and play them for hours on end, maybe not finishing them, but definitely getting as much juice out of them as possible, playing them to death.
And nowadays not really, like, I don't know, I haven't bothered to play a MOD or custom .wad for Doom in years, or a Half-Life single player MOD, and I've never even bothered to find the secret levels in Quake, I just burned trough the games and didn't even looked back, just to check them out in my imaginary checklist of games.
Does this ever happen to you?
>>3897050
No.
I don't worry much about finishing games and just play what I feel like at the time. Though lately it feels like I spend more time modifying and organizing my consoles than I do playing them.
Jesus christ lose some weight dude, its unhealthy. You will never get a pussy in this state.
