>be me, 33-year-old whose childhood was curiously absent of any Mega Man games
>remember that time when I was a teenager and one of my friends brought home X6, and we all took turns playing it
>actually enjoyed the game; became slightly curious about the series overall as a result, but didn't have the funds to pursue a Mega Man collection back then
>years later, find out that X6 is reputedly the worst game in the series

Since I have such a weak understanding of the Mega Man franchise, exactly what was so bad about this game? Bear in mind, X6 is my only exposure to the series, so I don't have any kind of reference level here.

It's not abysmal but it's kinda sloppily made and very strange. The overall quality is below X4 and X5, and it was released after the intended conclusion to the X series. The producer of those two games wasn't involved.
>little enemy variety, including bosses (red donuts, DNA blobs etc)
>you can rescue NPCs for bonuses, but they can die permanently before you get to them
>Zero pops out of a cake at some point because he "died" in X5, but then this game came out
>Alia's warning prompts every other screen

>The overall quality is below X4 and X5, and it was released after the intended conclusion to the X series. The producer of those two games wasn't involved.
X5 and X6 were a new team after X4. X4 was the last game Inafune had involvement with, if that's who you're referring to. It's why X5 has some odd new annoyances like Alia bothering you all the time or a timer to complete the game and RNG being able to decide your ending. X6 was probably just rushed out earlier than the development team probably intended by Capcom.
>>
>>3917102
Kinda what the anons said.

This game was made without Inafune giving the green light, was born just out of greed and it shows because it has some really weird and bad design choices compared to the other games.
It's something you just grasp as you play through the franchise.

>Sega managed to make the Genesis / Mega Drive backwards compatible with the newer, literally-who-in-major-markets Master System console despite using a main CPU with a completely different architecture

>Nintendo couldn't make the SNES backwards compatible with the NES despite it being older, more popular worldwide, and the SNES using a CPU with the same architecture

Can somebody explain this? Was Nintendo just incompetent?
16 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>3916768
The z80 was still in there, and the VDP was an upgraded version of the master system one. It was a beefed up master system from the start, just as the master system was a beefed up mk2/sg-1000.

Its possible the SNES was planned for backwards compatibility at one point, since the CPU is able to run 6502 code. It probably wasn't cost effective.
>>
>>3916768
>despite using a main CPU with a completely different architecture

The MD literally used an exact duplicate of the z80 in the Master System as its sound chip, which doubled as the primary CPU when playing Master System games.
>>
>>3916768
From what I remember hearing, the SNES was planned to have backwards comparability with NES titles.
At the stage of the SNES's release however, most buyers would've been previous owners of the NES and since the NES was made in excess of 60 million units and now with the newer, cheaper toploader on the market (comparable with PS2 slim etc) it probably proved to not be worth the extra expense.
The SNES using similar CPU architectures was probably to allow in house and former programmers of the NES to adapt quickly and start producing titles for the SNES quicker and better.

Sega had a very peripheral oriented mentality to their hardware and were always trying to cut the market with new different ways to play their games on different combinations of hardware, they had backwards comparability adapters for all their consoles and handhelds, as well as computer add ons to play G/MD games and so forth.

This 100%.

And even if I did want a physical copy of a romhack, people really need to spend more time making decent labels before I might give a shit. That Conker cart looks fucking amateurish.

I don't think I ever see this series discussed on /vr/. Am I the only one who still plays these games?

To recap:
>Wizards & Warriors (I)
The evil wizard Malkil imprisons several damsels and retreats to his lair. Kuros, the series' protagonist, sets off to rescue the damsels one by one before defeating Malkil.
>IronSword: Wizards & Warriors II
Malkil retreats to another land, enslaves the four elements, and uses them to wreak further havoc. Kuros sets off to assemble the IronSword capable of defeating Malkil. Along the way, Kuros has to assist four animal kings and defeat each of the elementals in their respective domains.
>Wizards & Warriors Chapter X: The Fortress of Fear
Set in an unspecified period of the series' timeline, Kuros braves the terrible Fortress of Fear to rescue the Princess Elaine from Malkil's clutches. The only portable game in the series.
>Wizards & Warriors III: Kuros - Visions of Power
Picking up immediately after the events of IronSword, Kuros is ambushed by Malkil's still-intact spirit and loses his memory. Making his way to the city of Piedup, he learns that the local king has been ousted by Malkil. Utilizing the powers he earns through the city's many guilds, Kuros makes his way to the castle's throne room to confront the evil wizard again. The series is then left on a cliff-hanger.

I was just playing IronSword: Wizards & Warriors II, go to 4chan and see this

It comes up basically every time we have an ARPG thread or that chestnut "What is the retro equivalent of Dark Souls" but although I played the first game incessantly back in the day even more than Faxanadu or Zelda 2 (it was easier/shorter) when you look back at it, it was really only a B+ game to start with and the series is one of those sad ones where every game is progressively worse.
>>
One of the big problems with the series I think is that your character starts out too weak. You get weapon upgrades fairly early on, but most people drop the game when they're retardedly flopping into enemies hoping their sword connects.

>In Japanese Phantasy Star II, the piano teacher, Ustvestia, is openly homosexual. When a male party member volunteers to be taught the Musik technique by Ustvestia, Ustvestia replies, "He looks cute." Ustvestia then proceeds to charge the male party member less for the lesson than he would charge a female party member.
>However, in the English Phantasy Star II, Ustvestia simply says, "He looks smart." The gender-based disparity in the fee for learning Musik is left unexplained.

>b-but Sega does what Nintendon't!
Between unnecessary content revisions and censored translations, Sega didn't do shit better than NoA. And sadly, these practices didn't end with the fourth generation. I believe Shenmue II was extensively censored for overseas release. This is to say nothing of the various ways SoR was put through the grinder before it could ever be deemed appropriate for American households.

In retrospect, I'm really not sure which was the more anti-consumer company, Sega or Nintendo. At least Nintendo seemed to have become more lax about censorship around the fifth generation, and they practically begged third-party developers to bring M-rated titles to the GC. But then there was that whole sordid affair with Nintendo's monopolistic licensing policies that drove Squaresoft right into the arms of Sony.

What are /vr/'s thoughts?

Stormlord on Genesis had to be censored as well.

Before this thread gets invaded by console wars: Is there any major retro company that didn't do any kind of censorship or anti-consumer stuff?
>>
>>3913974
Consoles were literally considered children's toys until very recently and America has a long history of censorship to perserve "Strong Christian Values".

Nintendo was going through in Japan what Atari went through in the states when the NES was released, so they made the draconian policies to make sure the NES wouldn't immediately be drown by knock-off homebrew shit.

Squaresoft ran to Sony because Sony was promising a land of milk and honey for devs who were getting pissed off at how Yamauchi was treating long-time partners to Nintendo. They left almost explicitly because Yamauchi told them that FFVII was full of too much garbage if it couldn't fit on an N64 cart.

Anti-Piracy, "censoring" a game because they didn't want to piss off the American legal system (Universal vs. Nintendo was a miracle victory and they didn't want to risk that shit again), not giving games a TV_Nihon translation, and leaving some games overseas isn't "anti-consumerism".
>>
>>3914030
>not giving games a TV_Nihon translation, and leaving some games overseas isn't "anti-consumerism"

I disagree. Sticking gamers with a sub-par product, region-locking your hardware to prevent them from importing the original unedited software, and then having the nerve to charge USD$60 for an in-house Engrish transration is very much a slap in the face to your consumers.
