honestly, i think sega had the right idea with the saturn. 5th gen as a whole should have been 2.5D and then 6th gen should have been the first full 3D gen. if that had happened the transition between 2D to 3D would have been a lot smoother and you would have less games that didnt control well and/or games that graphically looked bad at the time it came out. it also would have been a less of a confusing time for companies who were making consoles, because if you think about all of the 5th gen consoles ( and theres a lot more than you think) have made a major fuck up with their respective console except for sony and even then the ps1 still has its issues.

>except for sony
Sony's fifth gen fuck up was using incredibly bad lasers in their disc drives.

>still had its issues

and yeah it was bad but that wasnt a permanent problem, they later fixed it.
>>
Granted I was a kid when I played Saturn I thought it was amazing. Best memory was beating the game D with my mom. Great times I'll never forget it.

What dead controllers do you miss? Are there decent substitutes (no, not a mouse) available for emulation?

I just use a keyboard and adjust the sensitivity
>>
"Decent substitutes" is pretty broad but there are no shortage of spinners, dials and trackballs more or less simply compatible with MAME and if that's not decent enough, you can always buy real arcade control components or entire panels (or cabs) and make them work with your emulators. True light guns are a bit trickier for emulation but also doable.

Excuseme my English, somebody can help me find an arcade video game fight 1 vs 1, one of the characters is a dinosaur with a skull mallet

How old? That is, how many years ago do you recall, at the oldest. There are a surprising number of dinosaur (or dinosaur in normal) fighting games.

I'mma go out on a limb and say "Primal rage". Probably not it but who knows.

Characters that I remember:
Dinosaur, a mecha robot, yoyo warrior; 20 years ago

I remember getting Xargon from a dollar store. I think it came bundled with a bunch of other games. Didn't remember liking it very much. But I did like the bundle that had Jazz Jackrabbit and Epic Pinball.

Was there ever a more poorly managed company than Sega? Had they played their cards right, they very well could have stuck around - but instead they seemed to be stuck in a perpetual series of reacting to some other company and shitting out more rushed hardware instead of really sitting down and putting thought into their consoles.

Atari probably made more blunders than Sega ever did.
>>
No because arcades died completely outside of Japan and they're at the end of their life over there as well. Some franchises keep arcades alive in Japan, but it's mostly rhythm games. I think Sega's last big thing in arcades (that might still be huge now, Idk) was Border Break released like 10 years ago.
Sega had always moderate success with their consoles, but always had tough rivals. Nintendo and NEC in Japan, home computers in Europe, Nintendo and PC in USA, not to mention the PlayStation, which was the actual reason of Sega's retirement from consoles.
>>
>>3931386
By the way I mean "no" as in Sega isn't remotely close one of the most poorly managed companies, not even close. They were once big, and not many companies can say they were as big as Sega.
The SoJ vs SoA gossip bullshit is irrelevant when actual hard factors like Sony's system and the situation in arcades in Japan forced Sega to cut threads, which resulted in the Sega-Sammy merge.

What if the Saturn had a 2D Sonic game at launch or within the first year?
45 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
probably would have been a bit more successful. system failed due to poor handling for years however, not just no sonic.
>>
>>3930670
People still wouldn't have bought them because
- Sega shafted distributors with the early launch, nobody carried Saturns
- Sega shafted its users with the 32x, nobody bought a Saturn because they didn't want yet another console that gets obsolete within a year.

And by 1996 you already had rumours of Saturn getting an expansion to boost its 3d power. So parents just said "fuck this, imma buy a new Nintendo or a PSX".
>>
>>3930678
why is the playstation the only console people actively refer to by its prototype/dev name? No one calls the xbox the direct xbox, the n64 the ultra 64.

So how do I go about replaying Shenmue? Just got done playing and is gud but I can't for the life of me find any replay value in this on my own. And the amount of dead space in my memo pad by the end of the game was staggering.

Get drunk. Spend all your time in parking lots training and/or setting highscores in arcade and collect the crank machine toys. "This is cool"
Also buy yourself yakuza, its a great series with the same spirit.
>>
>>3930056

don't rush the main quest. you have a ton of time to complete it. talk to NPCs constantly, especially important characters. explore a lot and do everything available to you. there are lots of little events you can miss.

if you really wanna be anal there's guides that'll help you get every journal entry.
>>
There is always things you missed on your first playthrough be items, those scrolls, tomato shop prizes, or events . There are quite some missable events due to tight timed slot, especially when you start working in the harbor.
The 4th disk does tell if you missed some things, like townfolks or some other shit.

Oh, and you can have the real weather from 86 in the 2ndplaythrough

Is Ocarina of Time playable in Japanese, if I have a basic understanding of the language?

I am able to read katakana and hiragana, but not kanji, and my vocabulary is pretty limited.

This is retarded, play it in your native language if you haven't played it before.

I'm assuming you have a Japanese cart? If you have a gameshark, there's a code that'll display the language in English.

Is there a game like this without random encounters? I really enjoyed the platforming parts but the rest felt unnecessary.

Demon's Crest, the SNES sequel, but the problem with that game is that you can hover infinitely in the air from the start making a lot of the platforming sections too easy. The bosses are a lot harder though.
>>
>>3927120
The sequel, on the NES. Also, GB, but avoid that version.

How big are the differences?
I remember being surprised that GQ2 was also on GB, but I never did a thorough enough playthrough.

I recently discovered the OST of Super Monaco GP (Genesis).

The game itself looks really bad, but listen at that epic music, by the master Tokuhiko Uwabo:

Samurai Shodown's port on Game Boy was not a very good game, but some of the music is amazing.

Ukyo's theme on Game Boy is more ominous, powerful and danceable than in any other version:

I hate how the Playstation era is being forgotten and denigrated. Whenever there's an HD compilation made, they ALWAYS skip the Playstation games. Supposedly, the idea is that the 3D is too primitive to work. This creates problems for series like Silent Hill or Metal Gear Solid, where the first game in the series plot, plays a large role in the later sequels.

PGXP is proving that, you know what, these games DO look pretty good in HD. A lot of the problems are caused by texture distortions and other errors. Yeah, they're not Dreamcast or PS2 games. But they look fine.

They're just lazy hacks making a quick buck. They're not interested in reverse engineering 20 year old Playstation games.
>>
>>3923868

Because their paymasters decided it wasn't worth it. SH HD was a total shitshow, so it's no big loss. But MGS HD was great. But it lacked MGS.

PS games can look absolutely great in motion.
Even back during its heyday, still shots of games showed their jaggies off prominently. You have to see those games in motion to really appreciate them.
