Was there ever a console so beloved? It's like the Saturn, but it actually has good games. The Dreamcast was such a quirky little system too

I have no problem with the Dreamcast and was happy to have it when it came out, but I think the whole "Dreamcast is fucking awesome" thing is perhaps as much a meme spouted by people who may or may not have ever even owned one as it is based on carefully formed opinions.

No meme.
I had/have one and it's my all time favourite system with no other console before or since even coming close to how much I love it.

>called everywhere as a 2d powerhouse
>many multiplat 2d games looked like garbage on the saturn
>the good ones needed an extended ram cartridge to actually get some advantage

I'm starting to feel the Saturn was just overpraised by nostalgiafags.

Here... I'll help you with your bait thread:

"metroidvania"
>>
Everyone knows the hardware was overly complicated with it's 2 CPUs competing for resources without much hardware or software support. To program efficiently against it was an accomplishment.

Of course multiplat games would look like shit.

I'm not defending the design of the Saturn, but it does have a fantastic library. Try exclusive titles.
>>
Street Fighter Alpha 2 can do the opening sequence all in sprites on the Saturn.
The PS1 port has an FMV of the opening, resulting in less quality image overall.
Also, in-game the PS1 is missing at least half the frames and it's noticeable, while the Saturn version, while not full, is pretty close to the arcade, to the point people were tricked into thinking it was arcade perfect back in the day.
Of course SFA2 on Saturn doesn't require any extra RAM.

Saturn is a good 2D system, this isn't up for debate.

After Swamp Palace you can either complete Skull Woods or Thieves' Town next, but that's about it.
I guess you could also complete Misery Mire before Ice Palace, but I doubt someone would try that on their first playthrough.

For the life of me, I can't get ePSX running silent hill no matter the configuration I try, everything fails and all I get in Google is a lot of dead links or configurations that, again, just don't work, most plug-ins are terrible outdated and stuff.

So please /vr/, give me a helping hand here, I just want to share this amazing game with the new generations.

Pic related, another guide that doesn't work for shit.

Best retro RTS game ever made released in 1997.

Isn't that game just a generic Dune 2 clone?
>>
That's the game where water was a currency? No matter Total Annihilation was better still.
>>
And that is what ultimately killed the genre.
There were to many best RTS games ever made during and around that era. As far as genres go, this was one that was mastered too quickly, leaving succeeding games with nothing really to innovate on or fix for the better.

Which is the better yoshi game?
Story or island
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Story is OK but Island is a classic.

There is absolutely nothing that Yoshi's Story does better than Yoshi's Island
>>
Yoshi's Island for a challenge and dat music.

Yoshi's Story for maximum comfy or when you need to kill an hour or less of time and want some effortless fun.

Honestly they're both entirely different games, and Yoshi's Island is the superior one, no contest. Yoshi's Story would've been so much better if it was as long as Yoshi's Island. Sure you can replay it for other levels, assuming you got all the hearts, but it just isn't the same.
>>
Obviously Island, but Story stands on its own as a creative and very visually-appealing game, it's just unfortunate it has to be compared to the timeless classic that is YI.

Hi guys. Here's a little pretty question for you all. When I was a child I managed to beat videogames one by one even the hardest ones. But when I first discovered emulation I wasn't able to complete Contra or Battletoads although I tried really hard. So what's wrong? Anyone with the same situation?
> git gud
Well, I'm not that bad with videogames. With modern ones I mean. My gaming skills were clearly developing through years but I can't beat old gameslike I did in the past.
> you have less time to master games 'cause you're an adult
Maybe yes, maybe not. In my childhood I was allowed to play my Sega Genesis / NES for about an hour per day. And still I was pretty good in gaming, I guess.

Can't wait to hear your opinions, guys. And sorry for my english.

Subconsciously you feel that video games are for children and don't play them as passionately as you did when you were an actual child, resulting in worse performance.
>>
In today's society everyone treats children like retards. It's the "protect the kids!" mentality backfiring, as by treating kids like retards you prevent them from reaching their true potential (and I'm not just talking video games here, that'd be rather trivial).

My point is, kids learn faster and more easily, have better reaction time, and more time to spend.

Here my SNES JRPG backlog. What should I prioritise? What shouldn't I bother with?

Skip everything except Terranigma.
>>
Those are all good, I'd say prioritize terranigma and lufia 2. Dqv, tales and star ocean all have remakes. Dq5 is fine on snes but the ds one really makes it shine. And tales for PSX is infinitely better. Star ocean I'd say play SNES personally.
>>
>>3938243
>prioritise
Evermore, Terranigma and Lufia 2.
FF V and Star Ocean aren't bad but play those other 3 first.
>What shouldn't I bother with?
BOF2 - very mediocre game with rubbish writing, the re-translation patch doesn't make it much better.
DQV - Good but play the PS2 version instead
Phantasia - Play the PS1 version instead

How does /vr/ feel about repro carts/boxes? Not like romhacks/translation patches, but just straight up repros of standard games?

As someone who enjoys having a physical collection but can't dump as much money into certain titles as I would like, and who really, really prefers mint/near mint quality in the things I -do- but, I've been thinking of investing in repro carts and boxes for them

First time I'm really dealing with .NRG files. Any tips on what I should do to access the game & is it normal for older games to have .NRG files? I hear Daemon Tools works but I'd like a little more insight.

NRG are Nero Burning ROM disc image format.
Though, I've never tried it with multi-CD games, have you tried with Alcohol 120%? using virtual drives. Also Alcohol 120% can probably dump those files to standard ISO format, just mount them and then rip them, if there's encryption Alcohol 120% can get around it easily (SecuROM and similar).

Do this:
>mount the images to virtual drive with Alcohol 120%
>try installing the game

If it installs and works it's all good, otherwise:
>mount them to virtual drives
>check if they're protected with a tool like YaPS, Protection ID or ClonyXXL

If there is protection:
>rip them from the virtual drive using Alcohol 120% choosing the respective protection settings
>unmount them
>mount disc one new rip to a virtual drive letter and start installing
>when it asks for disc 2 unmount disc one and mount 2nd new rip on *same* drive letter
>continue install

It should work. You won't know till you try anyway.
>>
/g/ generally recommends WinCDEmu for mounting disc images. It even has a portable version. They take issue with stuff like Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120% because those include adware.

I'm trying to remember this show. It was 90's, Canadian video game tv review and news show. Had a bald guy on a tv screen. It had sections where people would play a game and give a rent, or buy decision. I remember they did Vectorman once. It had colorful sets, and was aimed primarily at kids.

No, it was not Video & Arcade Top 10. No, it was not The Electiric Playground with Tommy Tallerico and Victor Lucas. It was a different show. More short lived and obscure.

Game head, Game Nation. Something like that.

There was a series called Twitch in the USA that was somewhat similar, but they were only around in 1995/1996 for the early PS1/Saturn era games.

It was on some weird ass network called Preview TV which would have shows from other cable networks to entice you to call your cable company and upgrade your channel lineup.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1744868/

lmao at the 2.5 ranking - who are the 30 people who remembered this weird show enough to rate it?

Game Nation totally existed, I don't know if it's the exact show you're remembering II don't remember the bald guy you do). I found this segment about VR on youtube that I remember watching when it was new.

Yeah, it's Game Nation. There's the set, the logo, and the bald guy on the tv that I remember.
