My SNES started fucking up on me. It wont properly display color. I see horizontal bars that mess up the color from one side of the screen to another.
What could this be? How do I fix it? If no one knows, who-if anybody, fixes retro consoles anymore?

Try youtube.
Also, clean your shit.

How? SNES Cleaning kit? Are you sure it's not a hardware problem?

post pics of how dirty you snezz is so I can laugh
Why doesn't anyone ever talk about Super Mario Bros X? It is easily one of the best fan games ever made and the default episode "The Invasion" is like a combination of all the SNES adaptations of the original Mario Bros trilogy plus World. This game needs more love!
>>4043872
Not to mention it has a bad ass story where Bowser actually INVADES the Mushroom Kingdom, rather than just abducting the princess.
>>4043878
So I guess all those Koopa troopas and Goombas in the other games are just going for a stroll then.
Couple things
1 IT'S NOT RETRO
2 Original devs abandoned the project and there are a few bugs left to squish
3 Amateur game designers are more interested in making Mario World romhacks, building levels for Mario Maker or coding their own engines
Yo /vr/
I plan to buy a PSX in the near future but I'm having a few concerns regarding which revision should one buy for the best experience.
On youtube I have seen multiple videos about people hacking a setup together to get RGB signal out of a PSX, but I noticed most of these videos were american people doing that. Does that affect someone living in Europe planning to buy a xxx2 (PAL) console for a CRT with SCART?
I also hear varying opinions about sound quality in different revisions, with 1k being marked as the audiophile version, despite some people claiming that there is basically no difference between the 7k/9k and earlier versions.
Build quality is also a concern of mine, some say that 5.5k is the best.
I also want to install a PSIO on this thing, because one has to realise that these are 20+ years old optical drives and they are failing left and right. If I get one with a working optical drive I'd also like to install an MM3 on it along with PSIO, just for the sake of having a fully loaded console and an MM3 is also dirt cheap. Are these two even compatible with each other?

You seem to know what you're doing.

>I also hear varying opinions about sound quality in different revisions, with 1k being marked as the audiophile version, despite some people claiming that there is basically no difference between the 7k/9k and earlier versions.
That's a stupid meme. They all sound the same. The first revision became popular with audiophiles because it was a good CD player, looked fairly nice, had convenient ports on the back, and used to cost about $5. You couldn't get a better CD player at that price. The idea that it's better than modern CD players or that the later revisions sound worse is absolute garbage.
You know how audiophiles are. If you told them they could get a 'richer soundstage' by cutting off their dicks they'd all become eunuchs overnight.
>Build quality is also a concern of mine, some say that 5.5k is the best [...] one has to realise that these are 20+ years old optical drives and they are failing left and right.
The first model actually has the worst failure rate. The laser isn't the part of the drive that fails in these things, it's the plastic rails. They get too hot and sag, making it impossible for the laser to focus. This becomes less of an issue in newer revisions.
>Just bought a functioning cabinet with only the trigger being broken for $250
Was it a good purchase? The cabinet is in good condition too
>good condition

100% faggot
>>4043054
Why did you pay $250 just to beat it with a bat?
Is there a cheap SCART (RGB/S-video/Composite) to VGA(or HDMI) converter box available?
Something that isn't 200 bucks, for that money I'd just get a BVM/PVM, but just a cheap box that converts my SCART shit to VGA so I can just use a huge ass Trinitron tube VGA monitor I already have laying around instead?

PC monitors look pretty terrible with 240p if they work at all.
>>4041876
>PC monitors look pretty terrible with 240p
Nah, they are fine, there was a thread about that shit a few weeks (months?) ago.
>if they work at all.
That's why I'm asking about a converter, I'm not talking about feeding a 15kHz signal into a 31kHz VGA monitor.
Resolution side, 240p works on any shitty VGA monitor. Many DOS games supported QVGA.
>>4041893
>Nah, they are fine, there was a thread about that shit a few weeks (months?) ago.
Got low standards.
>Resolution side, 240p works on any shitty VGA monitor. Many DOS games supported QVGA.
You're in for disappoint and realization when it doesn't work.
My favorite Mega Man entry is getting a rerelease along with some bad games (8, 9 and 10)
Which was your favorite to use: Protoman Shield or RUSH Armor?
Why was it your favorite compared to the previous six (and X)?
>>4041826
Shit happens, man.
>>4041826
Well my first three Mega Man games are: MM4, MMX and MM7
While I have an appreciation for NES graphics, I always thought NES Mega Man was a fugly series of games. Mega Man X's anime styling was very appealing at the time for me, but I just overall liked the difficulty, graphics and music of MM7 more. If Mega Man X is Dragon Ball Z or Gundam Wing, then Mega Man 7 was like playing a Disney cartoon.
Then I eventually played all of them in the PS2 Anniversary Collection, and while I liked MM1-6, MM7 SNES is still my favorite.
The face that launched several million N64s into several million homes
Say something nice about it
Hi worst James Bond, you have a nice butt!
For England, James?
"For England, James?"
Recently I've started having trouble playing my retro video games. Any video games to be honest. I start playing and just get bored. I used to love Super Mario World and have 100% completed it but now I can't bring myself to really play it anymore. I started Link's Awakening, a game which I have never played and just recently got and was just too impatient to get into it. Is anyone else having this problem.
Stray from genres you're comfortable in.
>>4041395
Consider that maybe your problem is external not the game itself, go do some chores and other stuff enough to sit and get comfy playing your retro game without thinking about anything else.
Ask yourself why you're playing retro games instead of modern games in the first place, and go from there.
What are the bad sides/flaws of this game? I personally can't see any, but I can't believe that it's a perfect game.
>>4041342
Maybe if you played it you'd find out.
No real characters
For an RPG, its really lacking in story that games like FF6, Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger were great at.
>>4041356
I guess you're right, the characters didn't have much character
Are you guys into the Game Boy Color? I'm not sure if its nostalgia for the era but I've been having a lot of fun playing through GBC games I missed when I was younger. I'll post some favorites but any recommendations besides the obvious stuff?
>>4041104
I never had one as a kid. Only a regular Game Boy.
While I find it amazing today, the lack of backlight really bothers me. I wish it wouldn't, but at night in bed with the lights off, I wish it had a good backlight so I could enjoy some Harvest Moon.

I had one of those little worm LED lights, worked pretty well. GBC is best in direct sunlight, though. It really is a system to play on the go.
Best "falling blocks" games on /vr/ systems?
If Magical Drop III counts, then Magical Drop III

Blockout.
Columns on the Megadrive.
I'm looking for fantasy and gothic horror side scrolling game, like Castlevania or ghost'n'goblin
I already plan to play Holy Diver.
Gargoyle's Quest 1 and 2, Demon's Crest, Actraiser 1 and 2.
Skyblazer isn't as gothic as it is influenced by hindu mythologies, but it has a similar vibe.
Nosferatu
>>4041017
and apparently there's a thread about it in the catalog that I haven't checked
What's your opinion on this great action game? I started playing it yesterday and it's fun as hell. I love how simple it is: blast through the game and pick water bombs and rescue civilians along the way. That's it, pure action.
Btw, use snes9x since there's a rain segment that goes pitch black on other emulators.
It's fun and a pretty good idea.
I'm under the impression it is also short.
It's a great run'n'gun. Very creative. I had a good time beating it.
Recently someone has been putting out a lot of PAL to 60hz patches and he already did Firemen, so if you want to enjoy it in English and without slowdown, check that out.
>>4040905
Nice, i'll start searching for it
Does anyone knows this game?
Name's Nosferatu, a side-scrolling game for the SNES. The concept is basically Prince of Persia meets the aesthetic of Castlevania. I'm an aspiring indie game designer trying to develop a somewhat spiritual successor to it, because even though it was a pretty good game, it had many problems, such as fake difficulty and some strange design choices, such as making the protagonist a guy with a jock jacket who punches and kicks his way through the entire Dracula castle.
My question is: if you could, what would you change in it?
I suggest you download the game and try it out, if you can. I'll wait.
I know it.
I enjoyed the concept. Not entirely sure if it's like this, but I imagined it's about some guy trying to save his girlfriend from the clutches of Count Orlok himself.
As for the gameplay, yeah, it could be quicker. The MC moves too slow, and I hated having to switch stances in order to kill the enemies. Plus, combat is very slow and the puzzles and dungeon design get repetitive.
Those are its main flaws, as I see it, that you could correct in your indie game.
If you need more inspiration and want to see waht works and what doesn't, here is a lsit of basically all cinematic platformers.

I picked up a Retron 2 at a thrift shop for $5. I have a NES and SNES already, is there any point to hanging onto it? Can I do anything neat or out of the ordinary with it, or should I just give it a friend?
I already asked my wife's son, he doesn't want it.
Hook it up in your bathroom
Or like on the front porch for neighborhood kids to play or to keep your friends busy if they stop by and you're not home.
