Can we all agree the SNES chip is overrated? I hate how the instruments sound so tinny and weak, plus how they had to make it reverby and low-quality due to the hardware/cart limitations.

What's the rarest game you own /vr/?

It would help to have a site that tells just raw production numbers rather than just values which can be inflated by speculation (read: Earthbound)

Earthbound pisses me off it's not even a rare game. There were plenty that never sold. If anything it might be considered uncommon.
>>
>>4219398
>There were plenty that never sold.

Yeah, and they ended up in dumpsters or landfills. They might have shipped 500K or so copies in NA but they struggled to sell maybe a fifth of that.

Previous Thread >>4183080

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

If so, what games?

Mostly modern games but he like Sonic, Mario, Street Fighter and Spyro. The first game he picked up and played on his own was Zaxxon at 1 year old
>>
A daughteru.

We play Donkey Kong Country series and Angry Birds.
>>
probably try different things
if it was me, them & other people I'd do party games
if it was just me & them I'd try different co-op or vs games. maybe do something like DDR vs mode and winner pics the next game we play together

Starting with the creme la creme.

I see people constantly harp about Thief 2 and its map reuse with Casing the Joint/Masks, but why don't they hold the first game to the same standard? Strange Bedfellows is arguably the worst mission in the game just because there's so little to do. There's no loot collection, most of the map doesn't do anything, and there's only 2, maybe 3 real stealth sections. At least Casing the Joint and Masks kept up stealth the whole time.

>>
>>4162227
At least Strange Bedfellows is easy and very short, while Casing the Joint is long and tedious all the way through. Besides that's the second time the game reuses a level (Ambush/Trace the Courier).
>>
>>4162227
For whatever reason, I found every mission with pagans boring and annoying as fuck.

I don't have any strong opinions on the map reusem though. For Ambush/Trace the Courier, I felt that it helped flesh out the world. For Bedfellows, the reused part was just a marginal part of the full map anyways.
>>
Casing the joint sucked because it was unfinished.

Seriously you can steal the masks in Casing and then have to re-steal them in masks. Plus the traps around the masks are really clearly unfinished by the devs and only half work.

The actual level is great tho. And the rest of the game is godtier so I give it a pass.

This game never gets talked about despite being a follow up to a well known action puzzle game on the NES, likely due to being a Super Famicom title released in 1998.

I know its a straight block puzzle game, but it was developed by Pax Softonica which made the outstanding Donkey Kong 94 and Mole Mania.

It also included the original Wrecking Crew which is a great touch.

Is this an undiscovered gem?

>>
No, but my 4 year old is pretty interested in my Wrecking Crew Famicom cart lately. He correctly notices and points out that Mario looks funny and has a hammer which he thinks is funny. I've been trying to get him to understand that Wrecking Crew is like an episode before SMB which he likes at our arcade and requests to play sometimes at home.
>>
>>4233407
Didnt know this existed. And peopel barely give af about the original
>>
No one talks about Wrecking Crew because it SUCKS. It's a bad game that is boring.

I know people WISH it was cool because it would be neat if there was this other, more primitive, early Mario game where he's on a construction yard like in DK; but it just isn't a good game.

I don't see any sort of PSX thread, so I started one. It was time. Psx discussions involving mods/games/hardware etc.

I have a few scph 1001. One was obtained used years ago. It works great, plays burned cds AND has the updated graphics.

I have another old scph 1001 that I purchased new, which has not worked in years. Today I finally got a laser assembly that both worked and was correct and got it plugged in. It works FLAWLESSLY. It is reading discs that are totally scratched. Passes all tests. However, It WILL NOT read any of the backups I have tried. I remember reading about laser settings, but would I need to adjust things to make it read CD-r? I don't know if this unit has the newer graphic chip, and my 3 games don't really push it graphically.

This game any good? The hit detection seems sloppy and the bosses seem to go down to melee really easily.

Anyway, do you like this game? Are you a SHMUP fan or a non-SHMUP fan?

Also seems like there's no point in choosing any other armor but Earth. Earth is just 10x better than the other armors.
>>
Sega CD version is better IMO. Hit detection is improved (at least for gems), and the music is remixed so it doesn't sound like it was recorded in a garage (although it's '80s as hell for something that came out in 1995). It's also way easier due to longer invincibility time and losing fewer points off your weapon meter after getting hit - I beat Normal mode on my second try, and I suck at shooters.

But yeah, fun game. Might try one of the harder difficulties tonight.
>>
Yep, PC Engine version was slightly harder.
You can totally cheese the shop system if you farm gems in one of the water levels with the bubbles then kill yourself and buy a continue, rinse and repeat. But I think that would be just cheating yourself.

Did you know that the first Virtua Fighter had unused characters that were only discovered November 2016?

It's common knowledge Siba (aka, Majid or Majido) was intended to be Virtua Fighter's main character until scrapping him in favor of Akira, which explains why Akira's portrait on the cabinet art features a bearded man in a keffiyeh. He would later appear as Siba in the game Fighters Megamix.

Of much greater intrigue are the characters Jeffery Buckman and "Akira", both of who look astonishingly like early drafts for Tekken's Jack and Kazuya respectively. Jeffery's name is apparently based on Virtua Fighter designer Jeffrey Buchanan. In fight, his cap and shades can be knocked off. He looks almost exactly like Prototype Jack from Tekken 2.

Most interesting is Akira's early design. According to TCRF wiki, he might've been a separate character called Takeru, but it isn't confirmed. Curiously, his spiky hairstyle looks almost exactly like Kazuya Mishima's look.

According to some rumors, designers for Virtua Fighter jumped ship to Namco. These characters could've been the earliest inspiration for some of their other designs.

There's a video going into much greater detail below:
