I've decided that I'm not going to chase the SNES Mini. The NES Mini was a mediocre product. So instead I'd like to build a Raspberry Pi gaming machine, but I have no idea where to begin.
I see a lot of topics on this cool little device, and I know I should have paid attention to them sooner. Can any of you point me in the right direction?
I also wouldn't mind finding a NES or SNES style case for my new machine. Thanks in advance for your help.
There are a lot of great custom cases on Etsy Anon. You might want to start there.

Old PI's have composite output, new ones are HDMI only afaik.
>needing a case
Just stop. Do you care about the games? Or do you want some trendy peice of tech to wow your handler when she comes by to check on you?

What's the average price for SNES+some flashcart for all* games?
Does /vr/ play MDK?
All time favorite game
It's short. It's weird. It's overall enjoyable. I also love the design of the coil suit.
Yes, I beat it like 8 times. A true successor to Earthworm Jim.
Now MDK2 on the other hand sucks dick. Fuck you Bioware.
I keep reading on /vr/ and other in the know places that the Retron 5 is bad. What exactly is bad about it?
Not trolling, seriously want to know.
TL;DR it has no value.
>But it plays all my old games
It's running a stolen retroarch so it's no better than just running a retro pie
>But it uses original cartridges
It dumps the rom and runs a copy of your game making it no different than downloading the rom and running it on some shitty emulator for your phone.
>But it's nifty and cool!
It has a fuckload of input lag and the controller has even more lag than a retropi that isn't overclocking.
>B-But it's cool!
You're a faggot.
>>4086096
>$100 for a raspberry pi
Even in Australia they don't cost that much
>>4086054
>I keep reading but I don't know why it's bad
Reading comprehension problems?
Which was better
Duke had the technologically superior engine.
Doom had the most innovations and superior mod legacy.
I always wanted a spinoff where you could play as Doomguy, Duke, Quakeguy, or Turok. It would be a lot like the normal games with their mechanics put together but you could have multiplayer through the whole thing up to four players. Each character would be able to find their own games unique guns throughout the levels so they'd all play differently, but if you beat the game with a character that characters weapons would be unlocked for every character to use.
If you ever get all of a characters weapons in a single playthrough you unlock 1/4th of the HaFG, a bigger BFG that has unlimited ammo and fires faster than the normal one with the same power.
There would also be an arena style mode where you can splitscreen co-op or vs each other. There'd even be a Rank Up system where everyone starts with their weakest weapon and whenever you get a kill you unlock the next weapon in the cycle. Dying three times without getting a kill would set you back one gun.
If you beat the game with the HaFG without taking any damage you unlock Lara Croft. She gets twin handguns that have unlimited ammo and a raptor that attacks enemies for her. The raptor cant die. She doesnt get new weapons but her guns are really strong and she can backflip and sideflip for better movement.
The final boss is an onslaught of the final bosses of each of the four main games, then the combination of all four into one super boss. Beating that boss with the HaFG will unlock Super Hitler, a demonic version of Hitler that flies and shoots rapid poisonous fireballs while raining down missiles. He can only be hurt in his mustache but it's really small and only exposed while he's attacking. He is immune to the HaFG because it's made from Nazi tech combined with demon magic.

Short term: Duke 3D
Long term: Doom
Has anyone here ever gotten one legitimately? How long did it take you?
Sir Ron Lionheart got 2

really wish sirron would come back
Imagine if every quest, every item, every boss fight in a game required an item with a drop rate like this from enemies with spawn rates as low as this. That was basically FFXI. Endgame fights required handfuls of rare items which usually meant you had to share items with other players and only one person got the (rare) drop from the quest/boss.
Yeah, I got 4 of these. It took a few days of doing nothing but farming. It's not even that hard, it's just time consuming. Use siren bells to call the fight, steal siren bells to amass a good number of them.
So when did it become standard for arcade machines to take quarters to let you continue from where your game ended?
In the older machines this wasn't the case. A game over in Donkey Kong, Pacman, Frogger, etc. meant you had to put in another quarter to continue, but you'd start over from the beginning of the game. Your progress was gone.
When did arcade games start giving players the ability to continue from where they left off? Anyone know the first game that did this?
This change seems like it would've been a pretty big shift in the way arcade games were played and even designed, but it's a shift I've never really heard of or thought about before. And it seems like one that would've actually been a pretty big turning point in the industry.
Bosconian, 1981.

I knew it had to be some Japanese pleb.
>>4092751
I figure it's just an easier way of getting arcade-goers to put in quarters... As to when it first happened I have no idea. You have to take note, as well, that the games you've listed are endlessly repeating and that if you continued right where you left off.
ready for round 2?

Game was so fun I didn't mind playing through it again. Don't know what faggots are complaining about.
Is "This game is too old" a valid criticism?
I don't think so since I've been able to get into older games without much trouble. They might not have the greatest interfaces or controls but they aren't some insurmountable obstacle to getting into the game for me.
>>4092083
>Is "This game is too old" a valid criticism?
Of course not. I do think games can "age", but I don't think that's a valid reason to automatically dismiss them.
No, it's just code for "I have no attention span, I'm not willing to learn how to play, or I'm too casual for this"
I mean I think it's fine if you're any of those things, I just people would say that instead of trying to re-write history with their youtube videos about how game X was never good.
>>4092085
This.
A lot of old games are just too simplistic, short and repetitive. But that's a broad generalization. "Old" is not the reason I don't like them.
What is your personal favorite retro console /vr/?
(pic somewhat related)
Tie between SNES and MD.
4th gen was the golden era.
Yeah, it's a toss-up between NES, SNES and Genesis. Each one has way too many amazing games to just pick one.
>>4091928
It's athree way tie between the Famicom, Super Famicom and PSOne.But my favorite retro game of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, was for the Nintendo 64.

How do you honestly feel about Rare?
Share your thoughts, experiences, favorites and least liked.
they're terrible collectathons where you jump through endless hoops with little to no emergent gameplay or entertaining physics
they just feel bad to play because of lazy quality assurance on the math
the games almost all have terrible colors and ridiculously stupid character concepts
DKC is the only one that's borderline acceptable, and that's solely because of the graphics and the music, which they consistently failed to replicate
>>4091764
>i hate fun
You're a real corker at parties, aren't you Anon?
>>4091764
>emergent gameplay
Nice one anon, you got me until there. 2/10.
Why did it flop so hard? Even the n64 sold like 3 times more than the Saturn
>very few exclusive titles that weren't first party
>many great titles didn't get released in the US because Bernie
>many fans didn't want to bother investing in a new sega console after getting burned twice with the 32X and SegaCD
>many retailers neglected the system after getting jerked around with the release debacle
tl;dr version: Sega of America was headed by a major fuckup who drove the console into the ground for reasons unknown. This is old news. Unless you wanted this to be another "Sega fans whine about how the Saturn got fucked" thread.
>>4091419
In Asia(particularly Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) it did at least slightly better than the N64.
What does /vr/ think of the best Rockman games?
>>4089986
You just learned that Mega Man is called Rockman in Japan, didn't you?
>>4090001
I was born in Japan, I've always called them Rockman.
Rockman > Megaman
I would like to know /vr/'s opinion on this 90s arcade game series.
I've only played 3, but I hear it's supposed to be the best.
>>4089903
1/2 are breddy good.
3 overstays its welcome.
Everything after 3 is shit.

Metal Slug is the COOLEST trilogy of video games the world has ever been fortunate enough to see.
I want to expand my gameboy collection, but I already have a lot the games I want. What games should I get? I already have Mario land, donkey Kong, Metroid 2, links awakening and Pokemon red.
Dragon Warriors 1-3/Monsters
Kid Dracula
Gargoyle's Quest
Kid Icarus
Contra
Battletoads
Bonk
Adventure Island
wario games

Tetris.
What could have prevented Toshinden from becoming irrelevant?
After the first two games I think next were too anime-japanese and didn't have fruity-juicy enough gameplay. I wish they made a new Toshinden game, it really was a cool fighting game.
>>4089607
Toshinden 2 got already welcomed with shrugs, even from those who loved the first episode.
