Hi /vr/.
I'm playing TLoZ now and I can't help but wonder... how did people guess the location of these crazy hidden things in this game?
I mean, there are these tips that either don't help at all (like pic related) or help a little ("shoot an arrow" or "the secret where fairies don't live"). There are no hints for the locations of secret rooms in the Overworld (like Secret Moblin rupee rooms, hidden shops)... or I haven't found any, at the very least.
The official guide isn't really helpful, IIRC (compare it to EarthBound's manual - yeah, I know EB was released a lot later, but still...)
So the question is... how did the people play this game in the past?
My guess is that the game was beatable thanks to the guides in the magazines and certainly not in-game tips.

Also consider this example:
>MEET THE OLD MAN AT THE GRAVE
>go to the graveyard
>there's a shitton of graves
>one grave can be moved the aforementioned old man
>AFAIK there are no more tips given that would say which grave that is

Did people just discover the old man by trial and error? If not, they probably got the info from some guides... does that mean *they* had to do it by trial and error?

Donald Land for the NES (McDonald's platformer) lets you jump on your own projectiles, which leads to some wackiness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUolnTSNFYc (and yes, you can easily learn to do bomb jumps non-tool-assisted, this video is just an example of the limits the game can be pushed to).

Give me some more examples of interesting/broken/emergent gameplay mechanics in retro games.

Amazing Penguin for the GB is a fun action-puzzle game. Sort of like Qix, but on rails and featuring several different enemies with differing movement patterns. The behavior of enemies is completely deterministic, and sometimes you play through 75% of a level and then realize that all the enemies are closing in on your area, leaving you with no room to escape... in which case you have to try a different strategy.

To make it more interesting, there are minus symbol (-) items that reverse the direction of enemy movement when activated. You can also temporarily destroy enemies by kicking rocks at them, which is helpful for disrupting the enemy movement pattern.

Despite its reputation, EBay is now the cheapest source for retro games. I've given up on retro brick & mortar stores and my wallet thanks me.

What are some other /vr related redpills that might be hard for some to swallow?

>red pill

Anyone complaining about prices now was either too young or stupid to recognize why used game prices were so insanely low and that they would never stay that way for long so they bought what they wanted then.

I suppose accepting that you're either just a dumb kid, or an incredibly short sighted and even dumber adult would be a hard pill to swallow of any color.

Only complaining that brick & mortar are now charging MORE than eBay which is ridiculous.

>was either too young or stupid to recognize why used game prices were so insanely low and that they would never stay that way for long so they bought what they wanted then.

Hindsight is 20/20 yadda yadda Must of been nice to have a crystal ball plus the cash to purchase everything you ever wanted and even the great games that you didn't know about at the time. How many sealed copies of Little Samson and Earthbound are you hoarding due to your ability to see into the future?

>Only complaining that brick & mortar are now charging MORE than eBay which is ridiculous.

You realize that's how it would logically happen, right?

>Must of been nice to have a crystal ball plus the cash

It hardly took a crystal ball and managing money when you work isn't that hard. Nice Turnip meme, I get why you're so confused by economics.

Wabi-sabi is a Japanese philosophy that embraces flaws and imperfection.
Kintsugi is another Japanese philosophy that treats damage as part of an objects history rather than something to disguise.
Do you think these philosophies apply to old vidya consoles?
66 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
>>4145417
Thank god it doesn't.

Otherwise you'd see retards damage their consoles and games on purpose to give them more "value", like some retards do to their guitars.

Those philosophies generally coincide with objects of historical significance, not toys. We're talking about a hunk of plastic and soldered metal bits, not the pyramids in Egypt or the Statue of Liberty.

And if you allowed something to stay weathered or damaged for a period of time then it wouldn't last as long, right? Meaning you're allowing what you might consider "objects of history" to not be preserved properly for people years from now to enjoy them.
>>
I think that is valid OP, excellent question.

Despite >>4145425 (that didn't understand the full principle of Wabi-sabi/Kintsugi), each mark into a object it's a trace of history, naturally. Like scars in a human flesh.

Wabi-sabi don't consider intentional damage, but a kind of 'natural degradation/accident', search about it.

You literally can't name a more perfect game.

- It's fun.
- It not only sticks to its rules, it reinvents the rules.
- Good sense of space.
- Surprises at every turn.
- Interesting characters!
- It allows ingenuity; there are no perscribed methods.
- Makes you think.
- Contributes to the betterment of society.
- Makes you rethink your assumptions.
- It encourages MISinterpretation. The game has so many potential themes, I don't even know where to begin.

Quite possibly the greatest game ever made.

Well despite anon's attempts to soil this thread, I will discuss the OP and say I always thought Alarune was underrated as an enemy. She had such a big sprite she should have been promoted to a boss. Just think, you've got Alucard lured in by this girl crying for help as she's getting eaten by this flytrap-esque plant and as he rushes in to save her she reveals how he has fallen into her trap and then gets grabbed by the tendrils. It would make for a great boss.

Why are dragons so ridiculously OP? High damage output both melee and ranged, tons of HP and defense. You could make an army of just dragons and steamroll the entire game.

Im going to start the original ogre battle

anything I should know before going in? apparently if you kill units of a lower level than you your alignment drops and that can affect the way you take over cities

In which game? In LuCT they aren't that OP, their tankiness and high damage is balanced by their terrible accuracy and movement

i played gba version and thought it was alright. i like it more than 1 and maybe as much as 3. the final dungeon in 3 was just garbage but 2 seemed consistent throughout

I guess it's better than the first game, but that's it. To be fair, I haven't played 3 yet, so I dunno how good/bad it is.

I like it. But top 4 is quite the exaggeration. Those dungeon layouts are woeful. Constant doors to nowhere are just not interesting.
