Why is Final Fantasy IV so popular and well-beloved and remembered in Japan over V or VI or even I, II and III? What set it apart from the other FF of the time to the point where the Theme of Love is taught to grade schoolers?
>>4166828
They love their melodrama, so all the fake deaths probably got to them.
>>4166828
It's a fun game
>>4166830Except for one.
Why was this considered bad?
The two-button scheme made the game too limited when compared to most fighting games but I love the crazy anime-style aesthetic, how it controls rather well and the fact it has great music.
The fact you have Paul Eiding (Colonel Campbell) and John St. John (Duke Nukem) as hotblooded anime characters is a joy to hear.
>>4166663
For me it was no combos. KoF and SF have really fun combo systems, and the characters are easy to control.
EretzVaju is the opposite of this.
I get what you mean about the aesthetic tho, 90's anime style is near and dear to my heart. But that's why I play PC-98 games.
>>4166663
I don't think it was considered bad. rather I don't think it was ever considered much at all
>>4166663
Because it wasn't a traditional fighting game
I've never been able to get into Tales of Phantasia or Destiny, although it's been years since I've tried the latter, but I'm currently playing through this and having a great time.
Has anyone else found this? If so, what is it about Eternia that's so much better?
>>4166614
Eternia is a faster paced game with much better visuals.
I loved Destiny since the battle system was novel when I played it (being my first Tales game), but it's full of problems. Phantasia (on PS1) is a fair bit better, but it's still got slow combat that basically lacks real combo potential.
there's also the fact that Meredy and Farah are cute as fuck
man, there's something else about the game
like, it was to the point where I actually learned how to read those fucking runes (pro tip: if you forget what some of the characters are, just tilt your head sideways, half the letters are just mangled sideways latin letters)
gave up trying to be autistic enough to understand Meredy's spoken Melnics dialogue though, which is probably for the better
been meaning to give Eternia another playthrough for a while now thoughbeen playing the fucking mobile Tales game, Tales of the Rays lately, save me
>>4166614
It's because Eternia introduced many features, several of which became staples in the series.
Spells not stopping time for the animations was one great addition.
I started this last summer and for the first time in years I was really enjoying a JRPG.
I had just gotten to disc 3 and my external HDD died and I fucking lost my game.
It pains me to remember how much fun I was having and what I had lost.
BTW, there's a fucking TON of short, cute, character building, story expanding little convos between the characters everytime you camp that didn't get translated for the US release. It's a fucking shame. You can find them on Youtue w/ translations and figure ou;t where you are with them and watch/catch up on them on your own as you play the game. Here's a part of them:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc0d-339vbA&list=WL&index=13
>start new file on FF7
>go to config
>set ATB to wait
>set battle speed to fast
>set camera angle to fix
>every battle is comfy
Feels so right, highly recommend and I'm sincerely enjoying the game more somehow
>>4166597
You're weird.
>>4166597
Was FFVII the one with the ATB option that pauses the ATB during animations, but is on Active otherwise? That's the best system for FF combat.
Diregard the OP. Active battle is objectively more challenging and fun.
I'm looking into buyin an android box so that I can install Lakka for an all-in-one retro emulation box. Anyone have any experience doing this? What was the emulation like? Any compatibility issues?
I was planning on buying an mxq pro with s905 soc
>>4166471
A mini itx PC will give you more options.
>>4166536
I'm all about that 50 dollar price tag though
There really are a LOT of emulators for Android but you also experience appreciable input delay especially with Bluetooth controllers. Of course my "android tv" experience comes from a Gamestick I'm sure newer ones are faster but I definitely prefer my modified Wii for a number of reasons. Hard wired controllers, easily switchable SD/ED output over component and native compatibility with the GC/Wii library plus a price point like half of the $50 you're thinking leaves plenty of room in your budget for accessories.
I'm thinking of splurging on an Analogue NT Mini. Can anyone vouch for the accuracy of gameplay reproduction?
Also are all games compatible when playing NES games off the SD card? Or does it have issues with games that use certain mappers like the N8 Everdrive and PowerPak do?
>>4166275
But dude u could just get a real nes
>>4166304
If I got a NES I'd want one with either the HDMI mod (very expensive) or the RGB mod (also expensive) and then on top of that an Everdrive cart. I wouldn't mind spending a little bit more for newer hardware that will have a longer lifespan. Which is why I'm enquiring to the accuracy of the thing. Also it can be jailbroken to play games from other 8-bit systems.
>>4166312
>not using RF
Why tho
N64 LINE!
Goddamn these games look bad emulated
>>4166085
A big part of it is N64 emulation doesn't even work properly. For example>>4166080
Vehicles in F-Zero are supposed to have a specular highlight effect on them. Also the textures are drawn improperly in more than one way, but the most obvious is that the edges of the text is distorted and abruptly cut off.
>tfw this is still the greatest BSFTG of all time
>>4165927
BSFTG?
>>4165932
Belt-Scrolling FighTing Game, as opposed to SSFTP (one plane like Bad Dudes) and VSFTG (one screen like Street Fighter II).

ITT capcom characters you want to see in Street fighter
Everytime i reach this location in final fight my memory brings up a street fighter alpha (?#) stage. Did that happen?

What's wrong with it, Anon?
>he can't handle the pathos

>He's playing the PS1 version instead of based Dreamcast version
Have a nice, tasty Iguana-on-a-stick!
Talk about just about any and all retro rpgs here, Western, Japanese or otherwise.
looking for good suggestions for RPGs on NES/SNES
already did almost all of the dragon warrior series and most of the bigger titles for SNES
something laid back with a really good story would be nice
>>4165197
On Nes maybe look into Larange Point, Mother, and Sweet Home. Larange Point is a sci fi jrpg by Konami, Mother is a modern day sci fi jrpg by Nintendo and the prequel to Earthbound, and Sweet Home is a horror jrpg by Capcom, it served as the inspiration for Resident Evil and is based on a Japanese horror movie.
On snes Metal Max Returns is great. Story is nonexistent basically but it provides great customization, good gameplay, and some nonlinear progression. Also Live A Live is a unique jrpg that has you play through multiple scenarios of different genres like wild west, kung fu, and mecha. Both of these games require a fan translation to play in English.
>>4165197
NES: Dream Master
SNES: Energy Breaker
Pic related and Dragon Force were localized by Working Designs. I cannot find any intel about wether they fucked up the difficulty like in so many other games. Does anone know about this?
Does it matter? Just play the original Japanese version.
>>4163171
Japanese version of a JRPG without knowing any japanese? You're a big help.
I don't know if there's a comprehensive list out there, but you might be interested in this:

I appreciate these off the wall console and hardware clone threads, thanks OP
It was kind of "official" here in BR. We got the genuine NES from Nintendo much after the SNES. Before that, the clones were the only option. Same with the 2600.
The consoles were released by some brands that also made CRTs (CCE, Gradiente) or other eletronics (Polyvox - that also made vynil records and other stuff)
We had Dynavision, Turbogame, and tons of other famiclones even marketed in magazines in the late 80's/90's. It had shitty hardware but the fact that it was sold with the company name made everything look like it was originally that way. We didnt have internet, we never knew what was going on. We just saw a new videogame console and thought it was the real thing.
