It's an interseting format which I do play a fair amount of, just not sure how good it can be for a tournament.

Despite probably being quite dull to wtach for casual players (which is an issue for growth etc) VGC16 has been good as a competitive format. Bad players haven't been performing too far above their level and in geenral playing well is greatly rewarded.
The only problem with the format is Smeargle; Moody's passive evasion boost + Follow Me or the speeds boosts + Dark Void leave it as a highly volatile and really strong option, especially in a format where dedicated support is far more viable.

Right. It kinda shows that being able to slap endless legendaries on your team causes bigger balance problems than megas.

VGC 13 had the right approach - restrict the usable Pokemon. There was some really creative stuff in VGC 13, and while it was centralised to begin with, anti-meta developed in such a way that things like Kangaskhan and Talonflame were pretty easily handled. Still good, but you could work around them.

With the right regional dex, you can have a really fun meta. Yes it sucks that certain Pokemon aren't in it, but that's a necessary price to pay.

The major things to keep out are CressTran and the genies. Various problematic megas (Kangaskhan, Mawile, Salamence) can be kept out by not having their items in game, but can easily be excluded from the regional dex too.

It just requires a bit of forethought from GF, so we shouldn't get our hopes up
