You're going by the anime, but Ash is essentially a fill-in for Red, Gold, Brendan, Lucas etc, who are still the main characters.

Because May, Dawn, Serena etc exist in the anime canon, doesn't make them the game canon characters.

We only know of one canon protag, and that's Red. We don't know of any canon starter.

Personally, I think Brendan is Hoenn's protag because he looks more like Norman. And I take Nate as BW2's protag because of the short. Now, usually anime is an entirely different canon and I don't use it as proof, but that short was game promotion/ad, so I believe it's gonna be as close to proof as we can get.
