I kind of like that she wasn't around that much story wise. It gave her a little bit more air of mystery as to who she really was, unlike Steven's shoehorned "lol I'm helping XDD" moments that made it obvious he was the Champion.

I don't dislike Diantha, I think she's fine as champion. Like a lot of NPCs from XY, they just need a little character. Korrina was good because her personality was fleshed out, doing that with the gym leaders and e4 members would go a long way towards making the game better.

Or here's an idea, AZ is champion and his signature pokemon is Eternal Floette. I think that'd be fun.

It's definitely a thing where having a preference for older gens can only stem from nostalgia. Having the resources to make every city and town aesthetically unique goes a long way to having a region you actually want to explore. Playing X and Y I never felt more motivated to keep going just to see what the next area looked like.

I would've been a bit more okay with the lack of story role if they'd just outright told you she was the champion as soon as you meet her. Then I probably would've suspected a bait and switch like with Alder and been surprised when it turns out there was no catch to it.
