Is it weird that I don't like playing Pokémon games via emulation, or ROM hacks?
I can't quite put my finger on it but when I try to, something just seems off.

No, it's perfectly normal; part of the charm of mainline Pokémon video games is the multiplayer aspect, which most emulators cannot, well, emulate.

Yeah, but on the other hand the vanilla games just aren't challenging enough. And they don't have enough content.
It also feels weird playing older gen games when you're used to stuff the later games introduce.
It sucks, because the whole 20th anniversary stuff has me itching to play Pokémon but I don't know what to do about it.
Your brain doesn't correlate playing pokemon on a gameboy to playing pokemon on a PC because there are no pure memories of being at a computer.

Playing it on a gameboy/DS just feels more right, I know exactly what you mean. I think there's a lot of stuff to distract you on a PC, even if you consciously avoid it it's still there in the background, tugging at your attention.

Not just playing it on a PC, but playing it via other emulation methods. Like a smartphone or a DSTWO.
It's because subconsciously you always remember you're emulating it and that makes it feel less real.
I get the same problem with emulating Fire Emblem. You get less attached to your party members because you know it's not a real copy of the game.

Yeah I hate it. I immediately get bored.

Even flashcarts?

Yes it's weird you should like being able to speed up
