We knew of that scene during the weeks before XY premiered. There was a lot of intrigue about the first real romantic subplot in Pokemon, and how Serena was basically the first girl to meet Ash.
There was a few theories about how their first meeting would be, whether or not Ash would recognize her (and how he'd spend the series trying to remember), etc.

As for reactions to when that scene aired, I recall people wondering what happened after Ash led her back to camp, which is a question still unanswered. The general consensus though is that it's a cute scene, and the reason behind their "don't give up until the very end" motto.

I was able to calculate that they're moving at somewhere between 90 and 100 beats per minute (the former assuming that each step takes 10 frames, the latter assuming each step takes 9 frames; there are instances of both in the gif).

At 155 beats per minute, the game's version of the Laverre City music is too fast for it, but it manages to fall on the slower end of the most common waltz tempos, so there's by no means a lack of music you can easily set this to.

... That and I think the anime's version of the music is slower, so that might be worth a shot.
