What would the type chart look like if there were only 9 types?
Hard mode: make it balanced.
Nightmare mode: pair up types in a different way and justify it.
disorienting as all fuck
I played a hack that consolidated Ground and Rock into Earth and Grass and Bug into Nature respectively and it took me ages to get used to Flying now being immune to Rock instead of weak to it
flying+bug and grass+poison sound stupid (grimer isn't a plant and wormadam isn't "air") but the rest is ok. electric steel and fire dragon sounds a bit silly too but much less than plant and air
The more important questions are not that it's thrown but
>how are bones ground type
>why is it even ground type at all
>why did it take them this long to make moves like freeze dry and why isn't Bonemerang one those moves now
Why are cubone and marowak ground-type? They don't burrow (which itself only applies to a fraction of ground-types) or are literally based off land/earth (like claydol, groudon, etc are). They could just as easily be rock or normal-type.
You can't even use the argument that it's because they're brown because then Tauros, Kangaskhan, Slaking, etc would all be Ground, too
Except the FRLG counts them as mountain pokemon and not cave pokemon you stupid fuck
Hell, Pokemon Yellow put them in the Safari Zone
And by your logic, Zubat and Lunatone should also be ground-types
>Not combining normal and dragon into beast type
>not combining psychic and fighting into spirit type
>not combining steel and rock into mineral type
>not combining ghost, fairy and dragon into mythical type
1. Physical (all contact moves with exceptions for those with obviously "elemental" properties like Flame Wheel, Thunder Punch, etc. Moves like Waterfall, which is literally tackle would also become physical. Also includes all physical and contact Normal, Dark, Fairy [Play Rough only] Fighting, Flying, Steel and Bug-type moves.)
3. Water (+Ice)
4. Earth (Ground, Rock)
6. Air (Flying)
7. Light (Special Steel-moves, assorted beam moves, includes some Psychic and Fairy moves)
8. Dark (Ghost, Dark and Poison moves)
9. Almighty (Legendaries, Dragons, Special pokemon that don't fit in other places, etc)
Pokemon goes full SMT/Persona
What's wrong with ANY of those? Don't be so literal-minded.
Think of how the Aristotelian or Feng Shui elements were metaphysically applied to everything. It's more about being aligned with certain cosmic forces than being literally made of a certain material.
It's not like Pokémon doesn't already do that. For example, the move Solar Beam is literally a beam of light, yet it interacts with types differently from other moves that are also described as beams of light. Moves like Peck and Bite are literally not any different from what real-world animals do, but aren't Normal-type. The move Rollout is Rock-type even when it's used by a pokémon that clearly doesn't contain rock. I could go on and on.
who said theyd be retconned to match with their original types?
Chansey > Light
Taillow > Air
Porygon > Cyber (New Type)
Arcanine > Fire/Beast
Talonflame > Fire/Air
Gyarados > Water/Dark or Beast
How about this.
>Normal/Fighting become Normal, moves that were once Fighting moves that had no positive effects before now partially ignore defense on certain types.
>Grass/Bug become Nature
>Fire/Ground become Magma/Heat, are immune to burn.
>Water/Ice become Water
>Flying/Dragon become Sky
>Rock/Steel become Mineral
>Psychic/Electric become Energy, are immune to paralysis
>Fairy/Ghost become Spirit
>Dark/Poison become Dark, are immune to poison
>flying+bug and grass+poison
...are very, very common type combinations. It makes sense from a game design perspective to merge those types that way, because they already go hand in hand.
We don't want a repeat of Gen 1 where there was exactly 1 pure Grass-type species.
I tried. This would probably fall to shit with dual types, but yeah.
