is it even possible for any potential mega magcargo to be good?

It has shell smash, a stab that's SE on steel and a second stab SE on some of the game's prominent fire resists like charizard, dragonite, talonflame and earth power for heatran, and megas are fairly liberal with power boosting abilities.

Maybe take points out of defense and make it fast (after a shell smash I mean) and strong and that seems doable.

It needs a normal evolution first, then a mega. Then the mega needs to have Solid Rock, Then Solid Rock needs to halve incoming SE damage rather than cut off a quarter of incoming SE damage for it to be UU at best.

Even if you take away points from attack and speed and put them in defense and special defense, on top of putting all extra 100 into defense and special defense, it would still suck.

If they pull off some radical bullshit, anything can get a good mega. Just look at Beedrill.
