Remember being a kid and watching that episode of the Ashnime where Ash battles Blaine in his gym on the volcano? Remember how fucking badass and terrifying this thing was? It's been among my favorite Fire types ever since, and I remember always searching the Burned Tower in Gold version until I caught one.
Shame it's evolution is nowhere near as cool-looking. I mean, Magmortar is great in concept, but it's got those derpy clown lips, fat gut, and silly shoulders that make it look silly (on a related note: Mega Magmortar with Mega Launcher and a signature move when?)
I also wanna raise up a Magmar just for funsies in Battlespot random matchup. Would he be best off going Choice, mixed, or something crazy like SubPunch or Belly Drum?
>Shame it's evolution is nowhere near as cool-looking. I mean, Magmortar is great in concept, but it's got those derpy clown lips, fat gut, and silly shoulders that make it look silly (
This is a joke, right? I mean, you can't be possibly dissing Magmortar while praising the shitpile that is Magmar. I mean, 2 of the 3 things you complain about Magmortar are shared by Magmar.
Eh, it was never really bad to be honest. It's Atk, Sp Atk, and Speed are sitting around the base 100 mark, and it has the movepool equivalent of any generic Fire type combined with the Abra and Machop lines.
It was actually really good in gens 2 and 3 as a mixed sweeper/wallbreaker when SkarmBliss and Tyranitar were everywhere
Get your eyes checked. Outside the lips they share the same exact problems.
Now compare their legs in proportion to the rotund body. In face compare everything. Magmortar is at least 70% gut. Those legs are tiny in comparison, and spread way too far apart. Looking at it, there's no way those legs can comfortably support that weight, much less realistically move well.
Magmar however just has a rounded tummy. It's only slightly chubby in the same way the Charmander family is, and that's just because of the art style. Mortar is a literal fatass.
I completely agree, OP. Magmortar was such a letdown compared to Magmar's design and I couldn't believe all the people praising it and saying Magmar had a shit design. That was one of my favorite episodes too. I remember I had a Magmar backpack as a kid, it's probably still in my storage unit somewhere...
>tfw picturing little anon walking into school with his little Magmar backpack
Yeah, even now I could comfortably sit back and watch some of the better episodes of the classic first few seasons. This episode was one of the best
No man, don't remember me this pain.
Magmar is one of my favourite fire types. And magmortar sucks. The design is terrible. That face, that belly, pink parts, what the fuck?
I hope mega magmortar fixs that shit. Or give it an alternative evolution.
Same problem with electabuzz, electivire is horrible, design-wise
Electivire isn't as bad for me. Sure, Electabuzz is better design-wise, but nothing about Elecivire's design triggers me as badly. I just wish GF would give Volt Tackle a little more distribution. The only physical attacking Electric mon worth a shit is Zekrom, and it's the only one with moves better than Wild Charge.
Here you go, OP. A decent bulky physical sweeper that still isn't quite as good as Magmortar.
Fireduck (Magmar) @ Eviolite
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Def / 4 SpD
- Dual Chop / Substitute
- Belly Drum
- Flame Charge
- Mach Punch
>wider hips means it's fatter
It has as much of a gut as Magmar.
>Evire has a wide head, chest, forearms and calves, but thin thighs, shoulders and upper arms
>Magmortar has wide shoulders, lower body and thighs, but a small head, thin arms and calves
>tfw Electivire and Magmortar's proportions are each other's opposites
It never ends with these two families. They always seem to compliment each other no matter what.
Oni, not monkey
Oni, not Gorilla
Damn anon, do you even Japan? Onis clothe themselves with tiger skin and they are related to lightning and thunder.
Nah man. Magmortar's legs are skinny as shit and are positioned too far apart to support it. It works for Magmar because of its tail. If Magmortar was less egg shaped and had a tail, it'd be great.
I loved how every time Onix showed up it was like HOLY SHIT IT'S A FUCKING ONIX IT'S HUGE IT'S UNSTOPPABLE but they suck in-game.
>If Magmortar [...] had a tail, it'd be great.
But it does have a tail. A tail made out of fire no less, which is still cooler than any aspect of Magmar's design even accounting for its resemblance to the aftereffects of a Taco Bell binge.
Both are kind of bad designs honestly. I like 'buzz and even Jynx more.
that episode was hype, I don't think any battle came close to it at the time.
I spent days trying to find it after on Red and got pissed when I couldn't find it. Didn't know it was a Blue exclusive either and couldn't trade anyone since me and all my friends had Red or Yellow
Call me a nostalgiafag but I feel like all Gen4 cross-gen evolutions suck.
Pokemon I thought were great such as Magmar, Electabuzz, Tangela, Gligar, Misdreavus, Yanma etc. all got ruined because of those hideous evolutions. It ruined gen 4 for me even, least fav generation.
I kinda have the same problem with Heracross tho its about mega evolution and not regular pernament evolution.
looks better when other people draw it
>Implying that Gliscor, Mismagius and Yanmega aren't great improvements over the obviously incomplete originals
>Implying that Tangela was a GREAT pokémon to begin with, and that Tangrowth isn't just a basic logical evolution
>Implying that Electivire is bad
Shit taste to be honest family
I remember it too. Magmar in the anime was supposed to be this badass who would melt your face off if you looked at him wrong. Too bad in the game and TCG Magmar isn't as strong as portrayed. Same goes for Electabuzz and Scyther. These are supposed to be basic stage powerhouses that are rare.
That's it though. Its some kinda whatthefuckisthatthing fire demon duck. But more friendly looking
they're both awful
Poor Heracross, it was so pure
I actually like Magmortar's design. It grew on me.
