Eh, it was never really bad to be honest. It's Atk, Sp Atk, and Speed are sitting around the base 100 mark, and it has the movepool equivalent of any generic Fire type combined with the Abra and Machop lines.
It was actually really good in gens 2 and 3 as a mixed sweeper/wallbreaker when SkarmBliss and Tyranitar were everywhere

Now compare their legs in proportion to the rotund body. In face compare everything. Magmortar is at least 70% gut. Those legs are tiny in comparison, and spread way too far apart. Looking at it, there's no way those legs can comfortably support that weight, much less realistically move well.

Magmar however just has a rounded tummy. It's only slightly chubby in the same way the Charmander family is, and that's just because of the art style. Mortar is a literal fatass.

I completely agree, OP. Magmortar was such a letdown compared to Magmar's design and I couldn't believe all the people praising it and saying Magmar had a shit design. That was one of my favorite episodes too. I remember I had a Magmar backpack as a kid, it's probably still in my storage unit somewhere...

Electivire isn't as bad for me. Sure, Electabuzz is better design-wise, but nothing about Elecivire's design triggers me as badly. I just wish GF would give Volt Tackle a little more distribution. The only physical attacking Electric mon worth a shit is Zekrom, and it's the only one with moves better than Wild Charge.

Pokemon I thought were great such as Magmar, Electabuzz, Tangela, Gligar, Misdreavus, Yanma etc. all got ruined because of those hideous evolutions. It ruined gen 4 for me even, least fav generation.
