I wish the new seasons would be more like this. The fun/quirky aspects made it tolerable to watch, as opposed to just being an extended commercial for games and merchandise. The writers definitely had more creative flexibility.

The first couple seasons really did have a lot more soul to them. I liked it when it was just a fun show, instead of a nerdy "muh lore" wank.

When Ash, Misty and Brock first encounter Tommy, the gag of Misty telling Tommy to apologize was changed for the dubbed English version. In the original Japanese version, Tommy spaces out and stares at Misty's breasts which the camera zooms in on. Afterwards she asks "What's up?" to which Tommy responds "Can I drink from your breast?" She gets very angry, and hits him, and says "How dare you say that?" For the dubbed English version, the shot of Misty's breasts was cut, and he asks "You people or Pokémon?" It's pretty jarring to watch the first seasons of the anime compared to XY. I don't know if it's just the dub or what, but Ash really has matured over the course of the series (despite still being 10) compared to when he first started. But it's so gradual if you've been watching for all these years.

Just like in the games, you don finish after beating the league, after that, the game becomes more challenging, and you get to face even stronger opponents, deal with legendaries, you learn about the secrets of the pokemon world.
