Why are the original 151 the best overall set of pokemon designs, and wtf happened that made them go the way of the digimon (trying way too hard to be cool, lots of unnecessary do-dads and lame sources of inspiration, out of touch with their folkloric origins)
Who care. Talk about new interesting Pokémon.
I'm sick of hearing about 151 Pokémon.
There are currently 721 known Pokémon now.
>Using edgy sprites to make his point, as if they were the real pokémon designs
Even if they're intended to be representations from the original sprites, the guy made it unnecessarily edgy.
The word you were looking for is stylized.
>They're pretty close to canon
My original point still is up.
My least favourite part of the original 151 is that so many of them have been given extra evolutions that heavily outweigh their previous form. Like Onix is absolutely terrible, no evolution available. No Tangrowth, Magnezone, Magmortar, Lickilicky, etc. Its just kind of depressing to go back when the new evolution is the main reason you like a previously boring Pokemon.
>Implying that the evolutions of Gen 1 itself are big shit besides getting bigger and growing more heads
Evolution as a concept is just a edit of a existing pokémon
They're based on the original sprites.
it's true that lame evolutions are a problem in the originals too. doesn't give the newer gens a pass though. they still introduced some interesting evolutions, more than just edits of the previous creature-
crawly bug -> cocoon -> flying bug
the -saur's literal blossoming
cat to panther
tapir to pschotherapist
carp to sea-dragon
horseshoe crab to scythe-monster
and magneton is just an "add heads" evolution, but actually makes sense because it has an interesting concept that plays into magnemite's design (drawn together by magnetism)
For me, its nostalgia driven love for the first 151.
It was the time when the pokemon anime first aired, and everyone here went nuts over it. The hype was incredible. Everyone had their gameboy with fire/red/yellow. Every week at school we were debating what would happen on the anime next time, since it only aired twice a week and in the morning on Saturday and Sunday.
But as time went on, the hype died. Nobody here cared about the other pokemons after the another games and anime series got released.
It was then viewed as a stuff for a preschool kids, and if you got anything related to pokemon, you got bullied at school by the others.
Wrong. Gen 1 has some great designs but when you label them "the original 151" it sounds like you approve of all of them and gen 1 still had some of the worst in the series.
And that's fine, because in each generation there's at least 1/3 that is just forgettable or kind of lame.
Here's what you actually miss from gen 1 and why you think even some relatively simple designs are overdone.
Gen 1 was designed with the hardware limitations of the gameboy in mind. It also was made in the 90s and so they threw one toyirama eyes and other anime features you don't see very often today.
As the hardware improved, and the general contemporary style of anime changed, the designs were going to break this trend eventually. And they did.
Emboar was cool, the rest of V was shit.
-Tornados/Thunderus/Landorus are literal sprite edits of each other.
-We get a hitmonchamp/hitmonlee-esque duo that's literally just guys in karate uniforms
-more nondescript birds and fish, as if spearow/pidgey/magikarp/goldeen and their evolutions weren't enough for a lifetime
-more crabs and bats
-final evolution of grass starter is just a green dragonair
>muk made out of garbage
-fucking icecream cones?!
-throw in a few pikachu-look-alikes for good measure
>it sounds like you approve of all of them
limitations breed creativity, higher resolutions just let them decorate the creature designs with unnecessary markings and do-dads that clutter the design.
>limitations breed creativity
That's true, and it's called art through adversity, but this do-dad thing is over exaggerated and only true for some pokemon in the later gens but not as a whole. My point is that
A) If you judge modern pokemon with the standard made for the gameboy it is VERY easy for something to be *relatively* overdesigned. Emphasis on relatively. Most other franchises can get away with way more without getting the over designed label.
B) You could go through a thousand art directors but even the biggest minimalists will take advantage of better hardware, and their art style will be affected by what is contemporary.
Where am I going with this? Many pokemon have great stand alone designs, but not by the standard's of gen 1's art direction. There are pretty much two types of people. The ones who mostly judge the design as its own thing, and those who check if it's a good design relative to the art style Gen 1.
But you have to remember that Gen 1 designs are their own thing and a specific product of the 90s on toaster tier hardware, and those conditions can never really be met again. It's fine to hold them up as the pinnacle of design that should be applied to the whole series, but it should also be acknowledged that such a desire is pretty much impossible from the start, and a bit unfair.
Gen 3 has the "safest" set, with tons of good designs but no real bad ones, but not a lot I think are fantastic
Gen 2 has the most of the mons I think are best designed, but it also has a lot I don't like
Gen 1 has the best great to good to bad ratio, with tons of great mons, tons of good ones, and only a few bad ones.
4 and 5 are both very hit and miss with a lot of meh and bad ones. 6 has mostly good ones, but the dex is so tiny it still doesn't have a great ratio
>gen 1 is still the best
The one thing that it wins at is instilling that childlike feeling of wonder and joy. It's kind of like Kinect Star Wars in a way, it's easy to cheese your way through, the PvP is okay-ish, and the racing feels almost automatic.
I think Gen5 has the best overall.
Gen1 has a ton of stinkers. Like, they're protected by nostalgia NOW, but when I was a kid I openly only liked a few of them. Even Gen2 was better.
Gen4 is still the worst.
based on, not direct reproductions of.
compare with Yellow:
So that makes two advantages that Gen 1 has:
>(most) everyone has at least one favorite Pokemon from Gen 1
>RGBY are good at inspiring that childlike sense of wonder and excitement in people
>Why are the original 151 the best overall set of pokemon designs
because they feel like creatures that despite being fictional, could be actual living things. Every gen after made the designs too cartoony and toy looking.
they're labelled the original 151 because *gasp* they are the original 151
Yeah and Hitler was labelled the best world conquer and best human in the world, yet everyone hates him for his deeds.
Same goes for genwunner like you. You throw shit around and call everything original.
Grimer, muk, voltorb, electrode, magnetite, magneton, do duo, dodrio, scyther, pinsir... I could go on about bad designs... even ponyta.
It also means
>present or existing from the beginning; first or earliest.
WOAH! It's almost as if people say "original 151" because they were the first 151 Pokemon! It all makes sense now! My mind is blown!!!! :OOO
Do you know what franchise means ?
A franchise is commonly mistake by originality.
You want to know the original pokemons?
They call them monsters last time I heard.
Try some of the first games made on a console , any monsters are original, and therefore "the original"
So stop with that bulls hit.
Otherwise we can reverse it and say the original was shitty and needed a makeover, which they did.
Mew looked awesome.
Those in green are the original 151... and they look like shit.
Now fuck off.
But hey let's ignore the rest, lol too long didn't read.
Standing by the facts pokemon green the first game, is the first encounter of pokemon.
Please tell me again all their sprites are not shitty, but also the worst, meaning the original 151 had bad designs and sucks generally.
And in this context, the Japanese Red and Green versions are the original ones. The American Red and Blue versions are based on the Japanese Blue version, which is their third version.
We are looking at their designs as a whole. Not just spritework from one game. Regardless of where exactly they showed up first they're still the original 151 Pokemon.
so what? it's still the same pokemon either way.
So they are still based on their original look.
You can't say you dislike something that looks like it was made just now and say... well I rather like this, and you show a revised version of one of the #151 and under and say this is how they look.
No it is lies and is not the original 151, but instead just an random pokemon.
What are you gonna do next, compare 3d sprites with 2 d and say you rather like 3d because they were the original format type?
Doesn't work here.
So if we go by original 151 it is the sprites and artwork of the green sprites.
Discussion ended here, since you give no solid responses you have given up. I win, 151 is shit.
>You can't say you dislike something that looks like it was made just now
But it wasn't made just now. Those designs were made in the 90s. Because they're the originals. But spritework from one game isn't the design. Look at the Sugi art that was in the manual and the guidebooks that came with the games if you want a more accurate look at the designs.
>No it is lies and is not the original 151, but instead just an random pokemon.
it's still the original pokemon regardless of whether or not its in 3d or anything dude
>I win, 151 is shit.
Nice response. You sure showed me by saying yellow was original.
Right and you gonna tell me omega ruby and alpha saphirre is the original ruby and saphirre too?
They are just reworked games with altered sprites you dings. Learn your facts straight next time you gonna mindlessly bash people on the Internet.
Red and Green was how they were originally (i.e, first) shown.
>but my childhood...!!
Don't pull that Dobson crap on me, next you'll probably say that the DiC cartoons are canon and that Link's hair was originally brown.
I'm still incredibly surprised the games got so popular when it was filled with these godawful sprites. Hardware limitations doesn't stop you from putting some effort into your art. In fact, it should push your creativity and art skills so you can make nice sprites with such tight limitations in place.
You are so mean ;n; i call mootykins and get you banned.
Gen 1 has the best designs and those who don't believe me are hackers and noob. $$$ look at this money I have haha baka silly me
so 'cherry picking' now means 'listing all the problems'? how else do you expect someone to respond to '5 is the best gen', other than agreeing with you?
you do realize alligatormon's snout looks exactly like a dick, right?
