The female Meowstic was hit by a (Lightscreen-protected) Flame Charge and a Brave Bird, the male by a (Lightscreen-protected) Water Pulse and a Steel Wing, both where hit by their own Psyshock + Dark Pulse, then their own Future Sight and finally another combination of Flame Charge and Water Pulse.

This is what makes the battles so great. They are less a battle of Pokemon strength (which was the battle for most situations before) and more a battle of Trainers' wits.

In Alan's case, it's different. The strategy part enters into play only if the Pokemon's strength is roughly equal. Alan's Charizard is completely OP (well, that's his only after all) and is a full blown Mega whereas Gekkouga/Greninja is a "half-Mega" that still hasn't mastered the situation. The upcoming battle is a sure loss for Satoshi because the plot calls for it. However, the rematch will be interesting, I'm sure.
